- Thank god for Stephon Gilmore! Two nail-biters in a row and Skol Rant NEEDS his bye week. My god, I just want a blowout. BUT NO. The Vikings built a 17-0 lead, a week after building a 28-0 lead, and once again had to sweat out a win. Who else is tired? Whatever-the Vikings won and moved to 5-0 for the first time since 2016 (pay no attention to how that season finished).
So, was it good Jets defense, bad Vikings offense? Maybe Aaron Jones’s bum hip or Ty Chandler’s slippery fingers? Maybe it was just Akayleb Evans trying to screw with every Brandon Powell punt return?
Whatever it was, this game was weird. Players of the game: Will Reichard and Andrew van Ginkel, the former was 3/3 on FGs with a long of 54 (in the rain), the latter snatched a pick for a 63-yard score and a 10-0 lead. All Van Ginkel does is pick sixes, it seems.
Darnold, who we will never re-sign, was an abysmal 14/31 for 179 yards, and the entire Vikings offense sputtered after Aaron Jones left the game in the 2nd quarter. Chandler would play the 75% of the game and still only manage one more yard than Jones… on double the carries.
Even with Sauce Gardner out for a huge chunk of the game the WR corps seemed quiet. Justin Jefferson finished with 96 yards on six catches, but neither Addison or Nailor did much, with Johnny Mundt actually making the biggest plays out of our secondary pass catchers. There’s a chance TJ Hockenson returns after the bye, so maybe Jones gets right too and we can welcome Detroit to US Bank fully healthy. Fingers crossed.
Phew, we done. Five straight against the Jets, 5-0 into the bye. We’re in business, Skoldiers. See you in a fortnight.
