A melancholic and wistful theme to close the show. It makes me think that a career spent fighting crime has left Jack and George somewhat damaged. RIP John Thaw and Dennis Waterman.

Kids today don't know what bedtime means these days. Me and the wife sometimes hear little kids running past our front living room laughing and shouting. And it's well into the night and dark outside when this tends to happen. Goodness knows what their parents are thinking.

@@craigwhyte7273 I would watch the show on the sofa with my mother and my grandmother Rita downstairs as we were too scared to sleep upstairs. My childhood home was haunted, the property actually convinced a skeptic!!!. Way back in the 1970's.

I used to run home from the Girl Guides in South London to watch this on a monday night-always looked forward to Jack and George -thought the Sweeney was the best thing on the box-now I realise it was !
The best part was this closing theme-I have never forgotten it- and this is the first time I've heard it since I was a kid ,and I live on the other side of the world now.
Nothing comes close in my books

As I've just posted on twitter / X ... Nothing quite as iconic as The Sweeney's original opening & closing credits ... as an 11 yo watching on Television New Zealand's Channel One in 1975 I especially loved the more melancholic & world-weary closing ones with their slower tempo ... never forgotten the powerful feeling evoked.

I was born in the 90s, but have been watching both Minder and The Sweeney. What I liked about both was that they had elements of comedy in them, and the humour itself tended to be subtle, not like today's sitcoms where the laugh tracks convince you that a joke is 'funny'. Did you know that my father went to the same school that Thaw attended in Manchester (obviously not at the same time, but still)?

Euston Films had used Granadas in its earlier crime drama Special Branch, but just as S-types finished in Golden Sand were to become inextricably linked with villains with bad haircuts and worse dress sense, the Granada was to be forever seen as the transport for ill-tempered Detective Inspectors.
The principal cars in the show - the Consul 3000 GT in the first three series and the Mk2 Granada 2.8iS for the final season - came care of Ford, whose sense for product placement was second to none in the British motor industry. Dagenham also provided back-up cars such as a handsome, top-of-the-line 1977 Ghia finished in Copper Bronze, which featured in Sweeney 2 and starred in the Messenger of the Gods episode.

The cars all bore false number plates for filming and so, when the Ford collector Mark Marsdon bought a Mk1 Ghia in August 2009, he was initially unaware of its past as an all-purpose Sweeney back-up vehicle until a chance meeting with Pete Maskell, a Granada expert.
My first impression of Mark’s Ghia was of just how radically different the Granada is from its immediate predecessor, the Mk4 Zephyr/Zodiac, a six-seater barge with a bonnet resembling a mid-size aircraft carrier and handling to match. When the Granada was introduced into the UK, the whole concept of a “big Ford” changed from a scaled-down Detroit chintz-mobile to a Cologne-designed Euro-box with excellent road manners. The main British element was the 3.0-litre V6 Essex (Dagenham-built) engine in the upmarket versions.
The second impression was of just how much the south London landscape has changed from the days when Regan and Carter patrolled a world of greasy-spoon cafés, bomb-cratered waste ground and acres of derelict warehouses. In The Sweeney the Granada was quite often the sole attractive element in a sea of chain-smoking and bad diets. Taking the Ghia to the waterfront at the Hurlingham Yacht Club, just across Putney bridge, for the photoshoot revealed one of the few places left where the working riverside co-exists with affluent suburbia.
But, best of all was the fact that during the shoot virtually every other passer-by mouthed the word “Sweeney” as the bronze Ghia slowly cruised under a railway arch.
One of the best executive cars of its era is inextricably linked with one of the best British television programmes ever - a pretty good legacy for any car, Guv’nor.

this end credits version of the theme was the very first piece of music i downloaded from the internet, in 1997. The Sweeney was being re-run on Ireland's TV3 that summer and i became obsessed with this more reflective version in the outro, so i looked it up on the internet and discovered it never made it (as of 1997) onto a record, and was literally just the :58 seconds, there was no full version, unlike the main theme. The same guy had also made it available for upload, it was recorded straight from VHS lol the quality was dire, but i had my piece of music, to loop over and over. thank you for uploading in such amazing quality here :)

The closing theme really shows why The Sweeney is in a class of its own; after the fireworks of the opening credits and a rollercoaster ride as the plot plays out, this poignant close brings us right down to the reality of a hard, unforgiving world. It has helped. Personally, I like old films and TV series more than those of today. It seems that actors and actresses were more versatile back then and respectful to the craft - whereas today's actors and actresses, while a handful of them are good, there are plenty who are talentless hacks and do not appreciate the opportunities that they have been afforded. I'd give an arm and a leg to be an 80s child.

The famous opening was "let's go get the bastards", but the closing was suitably more thoughtful and downbeat and ... sad. It's like the closing was dare I say ... trying to cry?
