      Arsenal, Chelsea,Westham,Tottenham, Fulham,Queens Park Rangers, were dirty sides but because they were london teams the ref looked the other way. Thats the time of the brown envelopes. Nug Nug wink wink that sort of thing and is why London teams got away with murder But if a Leeds player just looked at the ref he got booked.nug nug wink wink.

    I remember this like it was yesterday watching it live on tv. Even then I remember that none of us could believe that he only got booked for chinning somebody on a football field. This was the first time I ever saw a footballer punch an opponent in the face . A Leeds player of course. I remember my Dad saying that we will never see anything like that happen again. Then some years later I did see it happen again . Low and behold , another Leeds player or ex Leeds player , Norman Hunter chinning Francis Lee. I guess Cloughie must have been right all along about what he said about them. Dirty buggers but a brilliant football team.

    So I've been watching all available football from about the year 1900, working my way forward. And great stuff it is too - far better than todays glorified 5-a-side. Tough, honest, exciting, unpredictable and a mood among players and fans alike of real enjoyment.
    Until I reached the rise of Leeds. And suddenly we have premeditated violence, intimidation and cheating in an atmosphere of bitter simmering hatred. Which instantly transfers to all the other teams and fans. The culture of crude English football and Hooliganism essentially begins when Leeds arrive on the scene and declare misery for all.
    I've seen some dirty teams in my time, but to permanently suck all the joy out of an entire sport takes some doing.
    I suppose you could look at it the opposite way though. The ferocious intensity and febrile atmosphere of 1970's and 80's football was great in it's own way. It was so deeply, deeply, SERIOUS. It was, for a time, the be all and end all - far more important than a mere sport. And Leeds, by decreeing that playtime was over, could claim responsibility for that too.

    • @winsfordtown
      @winsfordtown  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's just a coincidence and Leeds weren't the only brutal team out there. I think you need to understand what was drip fed on the news, on a daily basis ,in 1968-69 and how that seeped through to the public consciousness where violence was the norm. We had Vietnam, Belfast, riots in Paris, Sloane Square and the Democratic Conference in Chicago etc. If you've watched as many old games as I have you can see the progression from a few youngsters on the pitch at the of the game followed quickly by celebrating a goal. The Kudos of seeing themselves on television moved to teenage violence. It's easy to join a mob invasion. The turning point came in how the 1974 FA Cup Quarter Final between Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest was dealt with. Forest were winning 3-2, then a pitch followed and Newcastle United win 4-3 with the visitors facing enormous intimidation. Instead expelling Newcastle they were forced a replay. The fan had won and every time a their team was losing a big game we had a pitch invasion.

    • @eternalarsenal
      @eternalarsenal 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks for providing a more complete description of the context. No doubt, I was extrapolating far too much from just a few games. Which teams happened to be at the top, and therefore on TV, at the time - and how they chose to present that coverage - probably gave me a very narrow perception of the genesis of a much broader phenomenon.
      Cheers.

      All the clubs had a chopper back then. Even the great George Best could handle himself. Man Ure started it with a certain Nobby Stiles that had absolutely no skill aside from intimidation.
      But Bobby Gould got kicked and punched all over the pitch back then and so he would also dish it out.
      He's here, he's there...but we're not allowed to swear Bobby Gould

      Probably why Arsenal were always hated up north because we were the only team that used win Leagues and Cups and stopped northern teams winning especially when we were winning 1:0 and jammy as well I loved it, it used wind up them Northerners something chronic....the northern Noras have always hated us for it..and we could mix it up as well... that's one of the reason they sing "same old Arsenal, always cheating" that when I know we are getting up Northerners noses 🤣🤣🤣

    Like all great goal keeper characters (even nowadays)Gary was prone to the occassional gaffe,which everyone apart from Leeds supporters enjoyed I dont know if any video footage of the time he spun round with the ball in his grasp,seemed to lose his bearings and threw the ball into his own net,poss the best own goal ever.
    Cannot remember when,where or against whom it was but I can still picture it.

      He was generally a very good goalie though- like in the 70 FA Cup final he let Houseman's goal slide under him in the mud (Harris and McCreadie failed to clear Charlton's goal off the line due to sticking in the mud too) but made excellent saves too. He was superb in the Fairs Cup final (won) and did well in the 65 Cup final v Liverpool (lost). He was also probably Leeds' best player when they crucially lost to West Brom and with it the league- his team-mates had a bad day.

      He didn't actually grass up Billy Bremner and Don Revie. He gave evidence for the prosecution about a newspaper article about overhearing a conversation. He and Mike O'Grady gave an interview to the Daily Mirror which was used an article accusing the duo of match fixing. They took the Mirror to court for libel and won but it they became persona non grata.
