  • I rarely get to visit the Quad Cities area of Iowa/Illinois, so when I was in the area recently, I knew I had to take the opportunity to cross the old I-74 Mississippi River suspension bridge one final time before it is permanently closed later this year. It's such a neat old bridge that I'm sad will be demolished...but I can also understand why it is being replaced, and am still excited about the new bridge.
This is just a quick little video showing me crossing the old bridge from Iowa into Illinois, and then crossing the completed portion of the new bridge back the other direction. No background music or commentary on this one, just the natural windows-down ambiance of driving across the bridges.

I was little, my dad used drive across the old bridge to Iowa from time to time back in the early 80s. Sad to see the old bridge go.

I live in Morrison, IL, which is about 45 miles northeast of this river crossing, and every few weeks, I like to drive down to this area and get walks in on both sides of the river, looking at the progress of the bridge construction and destruction of old structures. It is now at the point where I purposely drive down the Iowa side first, just so I can cross on the old bridge and see the progress of destruction on the old viaduct over downtown Moline, which, as seen in the video, is now permanently closed past the River Drive exit. This video apparently was shot the day after the new 6th Avenue offramp to downtown from the new bridge, which is temporarily configured for two-way traffic, was opened, and the old 7th Avenue offramp was permanently closed (which is where the viaduct currently ends in this video).
