Lauren, take it or leave it: Your entire studio is the size of my living room. I tried minimalism and felt really ill at ease in my home. I'm a nester. I need sentimental things, I need things that do nothing but make me smile. I need plants to care for. I need crockery and things to cook for my friends and host gatherings. Minimalism meant I felt guilty for wanting those things. So I decided it doesn't work for me. I recycle, I reuse, I donate, and I have kept things for decades. That's enough. Minimalism works for a very specific lifestyle.
You’re right sometimes you just need stuff that makes you smile. I live alone no friends or family support and have paid several hundreds of pounds for a couple of art pieces which my sister thought I was mad to do but I live in a constant state of anxiety and (unresolved trauma most likely) but every time I look at those things they bring me peace and calm and stupid to say but are like inanimate ‘friends’ almost it’s hard to explain. But point is they serve a purpose that being the most important they could: propping up my mental health to allow me to function and work FT to look after myself.
I was thinking about what to say to Lauren to make her feel less guilty but you have totally hit it on the head. We shouldn’t feel bad for having things that bring us comfort. Lauren you are so thoughtful in your purchases and what you surround yourself with…. Please try and enjoy the experience of making your wee nest.

Awwwwww Lauren, Thanks for making me cry. I was so emotional watching you close the studio door for the last time. Its so awful when you leave a place that has looked after you and been a shelter to you through the years. It reminds me of when i left my family home and honestly i cried for days and days. We move on but the studio will now look after someone else. Sad in a way but nice in another. I can not wait to see the new place especially the new kitchen. I went minimalist, bought a small house, got rid of everything but the essentials - we all (fam of 4) were miserable so we upsized and now there’s stuff everywhere again. Much happier. Your home should be the place you are happy, it isn’t about rules or norms. Just be you and love your space ✌️
Aw I felt those tears - I get so emotionally attached to things. It’s like I can hear the noises of the past or see it like a movie .. even when I know the future is coming and it’s going to be amazing, still tears. Good luck and all the best in your new home. It's normal to get emotional moving to a new place. You are leaving behind lots of memories. It will be okay. Look to your bright future in your new apartment. ❤
Lauren sweetie, be kind to yourself. The emotions you're feeling are so normal and it's actually good that you're expressing them. It's the same as packing up physically, your brain is packing up your memories and emotions of your time living in your studio to make space for your new era and bring the memories filed in your brain to take with you. The studio marked a big transion in your life and where you evolved into your authentic self of today. You're leaving a big comfort zone for a major part of your life story and your moods are just a processing of all that history ready to jump into your new beginings yet again. You know you want this big change and are ready for it so you feel you should be upbeat about everything. Life isn't logical lol what you're processing is actually very normal and good to do. Now your ready for your new life physically, mentally and emotionally and as soon as you open that new front door all the joy will come in full force for you with no looking back as all the hard work has been done emotionally. Also you are not a hoarder and you don't have as many belongings as you think. You've seen everything you own piled up in the middle of your studio and it seems overwheliming. Once you see your belongings in your new home it won't seem so daunting. Good luck in your new home, it sounds wonderful and i can't wait to see it. Big hug hun ❤

I literally bought 2 scrub daddies at my grocery store the other day, and every time I use them, I hum kitchen in a cupboard to myself. Oh my god Lauren, you don’t have lots of stuff girl. I am a very very maximalist, I love stuff around me. Less is absolutely bore to me. So don’t feel bad for your things, just enjoy them. Make a fabulous, cosy home in your new house and enjoy it to the maximum 🤗
I am a minimalist and my last move took about 3 days. Me my dad, mom and nephew moved with to cars (a jeepling and a minivan), it took us 2 trips. In the last 8 years I´ve moved 8 times (only two of those were my choice, the renting market in Iceland is dreadful), a year approx. I got rid of half of my belongings and with every move I got rid of more stuff including my furniture (I love sitting on the floor and I sleep on a matress) so minimalism has helped me immensly. Also I have depression and not being overwhelmed by my belongings helps keep things under control, it only takes short time to neaten up my place. I also want to say mimimalism is a very personal thing, it´s a tool not a formula, I guess some people would call me an extreme minimalist but extreme minimalist would probably call me a maximalist. Wow I don’t know how I’d have coped with all those moves. I’m 52 and have moved 2 times, once when I got married and then 18ys later 😮 second time I didn’t need to bring any beds,sofa,dining room furniture,white goods as everything was left for us brand new! My sofa k brought didn’t fit anyway so I had to sell it but we just had to buy wardrobes basically. My Mum said I’d never get a move like that again and I quite believe that 😂

Moving house e is hard, on the top 5 of life's stresses, along with death and divorce so you should be kind to yourself. I've done it 14 times and as you get older it gets even harder. So excited to see your new place , it will be transformative for you. X

I call myself a minimalist and when I moved my entire home fitted into a 50sq ft storage room - and when I looked at it, still felt like too much stuff. I only unpacked what I needed and moved on everything else. Happy new home! Can’t wait for the next chapter.
Goodbye studio, thank you for all the memories. Onto the next chapter, with a proper apartment! I'm minimalish and it's refreshing to not have stuffed cupboards. Everything has a place and it leaves my environment stress free.

I originally told you about making coffee in the velvetiser, it makes it so frothy! You are right about it not being very hot so what I do is I pop it into the microwave for 30 seconds on full power and it makes it hotter.
8:45 Omg, imagine all the lovely things that will come now that you no longer will cook in the kitchen cupboard! For example roasting tomatoes in an oven for a lovely tomato soup, roasted potatoe wedges, Sunday roast. Just to have a proper work space when you cook. I used to share a living space with two others, and we all came from previous temporary homes where we didn’t have a proper kitchen. Lol, the first few months we would cook together and laugh out of happiness how much space we had compared to before. It is as you say, it truly improves one’s mental health to have a kitchen you can use in different ways. Just the fact that you will be able to walk into a kitchen now, and then walk out of it and not have the smell of cooking in your living room. My cat hate this new set up with a kitchen door, because now she can’t sneak in snack times at her own demand...poor thing❤

I moved 5 weeks ago. All I can say is don't get discouraged if it feels as if you'll never be done. Everything finds the right space eventually. I hope you are as happy in your new place as I am in mine. I am looking forward to see how you settle in.

I literally bought 2 scrub daddies at my grocery store the other day, and every time I use them, I hum kitchen in a cupboard to myself. Now I will have to hum kitchen in a larger home or something until you land on a new jingle, but it will still slap. I hope your new home is perfect for you ❤

I am a minimalist and my last move took about 3 days. Me my dad, mom and nephew moved with to cars (a jeepling and a minivan), it took us 2 trips. In the last 8 years I´ve moved 8 times (only two of those were my choice, the renting market in Iceland is dreadful), a year approx. I got rid of half of my belongings and with every move I got rid of more stuff including my furniture (I love sitting on the floor and I sleep on a matress) so minimalism has helped me immensly. Also I have depression and not being overwhelmed by my belongings helps keep things under control, it only takes short time to neaten up my place.
I also want to say mimimalism is a very personal thing, it´s a tool not a formula, I guess some people would call me an extreme minimalist but extreme minimalist would probably call me a maximalist.

Wow I don’t know how I’d have coped with all those moves. I’m 52 and have moved 2 times, once when I got married and then 18ys later 😮 second time I didn’t need to bring any beds,sofa,dining room furniture,white goods as everything was left for us brand new! My sofa k brought didn’t fit anyway so I had to sell it but we just had to buy wardrobes basically. My Mum said I’d never get a move like that again and I quite believe that 😂

Moving house e is hard, on the top 5 of life's stresses, along with death and divorce so you should be kind to yourself. I've done it 14 times and as you get older it gets even harder. So excited to see your new place , it will be transformative for you. X

I call myself a minimalist and when I moved my entire home fitted into a 50sq ft storage room - and when I looked at it, still felt like too much stuff. I only unpacked what I needed and moved on everything else.

I'm minimalish and it's refreshing to not have stuffed cupboards. Everything has a place and it leaves my environment stress free.

I originally told you about making coffee in the velvetiser, it makes it so frothy! You are right about it not being very hot so what I do is I pop it into the microwave for 30 seconds on full power and it makes it hotter.
8:45 Omg, imagine all the lovely things that will come now that you no longer will cook in the kitchen cupboard! For example roasting tomatoes in an oven for a lovely tomato soup, roasted potatoe wedges, Sunday roast. Just to have a proper work space when you cook. I used to share a living space with two others, and we all came from previous temporary homes where we didn’t have a proper kitchen. Lol, the first few months we would cook together and laugh out of happiness how much space we had compared to before. It is as you say, it truly improves one’s mental health to have a kitchen you can use in different ways. Just the fact that you will be able to walk into a kitchen now, and then walk out of it and not have the smell of cooking in your living room.
My cat hate this new set up with a kitchen door, because now she can’t sneak in snack times at her own demand...poor thing❤

I moved from a three bedroom house to a bungalow two years ago and because of how the bungalow is laid out it feels like so much space and such freedom.
