    If Lafayette hadn't convinced French aristocrats to send money & supplies to Washington's troops, the American Revolution would have failed.
    And the French Revolution of 1789 might not have taken place since it was mostly a response to the high taxes imposed to make up for the debt France had incurred funding the American Revolution and 7 years war.

      Skaolloaks The American Revolution caused the French Revolution because it bankrupted the king and got the entire western world thinking about putting enlightenment ideas into practice.

    What Americans also like to forget is that the tea tax or representation while quite high was, A Justified because tea was a luxury good which most people wouldn't be drinking so it didn't effect the average American much plus the tax paid for the debts of the navy which had protected the Americans from French Privateers and French Canadian efforts in 7 years war of French Indian war if you prefer. B one of the few remaining taxes from the British government the rest being handled by the local colonial governments. C even if the Americans got representation judging by the original voting laws of the US most people wouldn't have got that representation. And D hat demand never reached Parliament, the Americans responsible for being the spokes people of colonists and their colonial government never told them.

    • @erraticonteuse
      @erraticonteuse 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Yog Sothoth Tea is not really a "luxury good' in a time when it's not safe to drink unboiled water. And also if you're technically British. Seriously, the British really are that committed to their tea even today.

    • @yogsothoth7594
      @yogsothoth7594 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      lexidizzle Tea was too expensive for the average person to drink on a regular basis. The middle class could only drink it very occasionally and the lower classes would never be able to afford it. The average person would drink water or alcohol.

    • @Frost517
      @Frost517 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      "hat demand never reached Parliament" If hat demand ever reached the Parliament we'd be living in a totally different more prosperous hattier world today. sad.

    • @gamesman0118
      @gamesman0118 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      But you also skipped over the part where people were forced to house British soldiers at their cost and the fact that they were taxed higher than British citizens in Britain. There were many issues with the way the colonists were looked down on and treated unjustly. Remember George Washington fought for the Crown before the Revolution. Many Colonists fought and died in the French and Indian war. Perhaps the way they treated they colonies points to why they lost most of their Empire. I'm sure if you asked any other ex-colony they could bring up some points on the issue.

    • @Pelopen3bc
      @Pelopen3bc 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      They did *not* pay higher taxes than British citizens in Britain. Other way around in fact.
      "By 1775, the British government was consuming one-fifth of its citizens’ GDP, while New Englanders were only paying between 1 and 2 percent of their income in taxes."
      "The bottom line: American colonists were both paid more and taxed less than the British."
      "Taxes remained orders of magnitude higher in Great Britain than across the pond."
      Colonists housed soldiers and paid taxes to help pay for the debt caused by the French and Indian War, a war that... the colonists started! Not exactly an unreasonable request.

    Haudenosaunee.
    The indigenous people of what is today the State of New York call themselves Haudenosaunee (People of the Longhouse). "Iroquois" is a French transliteration that English-speakers mispronounce of "Irikwa", which is something their enemies called them. It means "Black Adder" or "Real Killer" because the Seneca and Mohawk peoples were really, REALLY good at war. Like, maybe a little too good at that. It's kind of worrying, to be honest.
    Anyway, other than that, good jokes and I wound up learning some new things about the American war for independence from the British Empire. Kudos!

    Disease was the #1 killer in war from the time the first caveman attacked his neighbor to World War 1. While I will not deny the impact of smallpox on US society in the late eighteenth century including during the Revolutionary War, that does not make Franklin a liar. Franklin himself saw prior to the war how the British treated former rebellious territories in Ireland and Scotland and he was right to fear the awesome destructive power of British retribution. As a colleague of Duke of Cumberland said of his campaign against the Scots during the Second Jacobite rebellion, "[h]e created a desert and called it peace."
