I couldn't help but smile when I saw your light box. I made one almost identical to it, even down to the lights lol! I wish I could send you a picture. You'd laugh it's so close, in fact I thought for a minute how'd he get my box lol! Works quite well by the way!

I have since built a new Light box and although my old one worked really well for many years, it just took up too much space in an already over packed shop. Thanks for tuning in to the show and for chiming in with your story. I love it. Great minds thing alike.

    Hey there Kenny:
I think that was amazing. I could see how everything came together as you cut out the dark areas. I've wondered for awhile how this process takes place. The more dark areas that are removed, the more the facial features take on a personalilty. Thank you for posting this tutorial.

I've had a Craftsman Scroll saw table for several years now and never really got into using it... yet.. When I was in the Air Force, up in Fairbanks, AK (Eielson AFB) they had a Skills Development Center where I got a part time job, running the store from after work at my day job until around 9pm each night. They had an engraver they used for engraving small brasse plates to mount on trophies and such. Then, talked my boss into getting a laser engraver. It even came with a rotary device where you could put a coffee muf or 20mm A10 Cannon shells in it and engrave whatever you wanted to on that. I even got to a point where I was working with the lady that did framing of artwork and I was able to use the laswer engraver to engrave things like sled dog footprints on the matting itself and not even cut through the matting.. The prints were usually sled dog prints for the Yukon Quest sled dog race from Fainrbanks to Nome, AK.
I loved using that thing and combined with the rotart engraver (Which I still used for Trophy plates, I could pretty muc engrave anything I could get a graphic of. Cigar boxes were great for engraving as well.
I sure miss working there and had a great team that worked with me but, as for all the trophies and plaques, I made every one of them for over 3 years before moving on to my next assignment.
I could actually take a picture of you and engrave that right onto a wooden place or some matting and the laser would adjust the depth of the cuts based on the colors of the image.
For now, I'll get into the scroll saw though. I've still got my eyes out for a decent table top engraver.
With the rotary attachment. I could scan your image, put a coffee cup on the rotary attachment and engrave your picture on a coffee mug or pretty much anything else you wanted it on.
The key thing to remember is that the laser will engrave wood and matting but, if you put a piece of metal (Like the canon shells, I'd try to tell them to leave the OF Green color on the shells but, they never did that and the shells were aluminimum (I think) and the laser wouldn't make a mark in them.
Good times.. With todays technology, you can pick up a small 8.5x11 engraver and have a great tool for making quick signs at craft fairs and such.
That image you have in your video could be laser engraved in about 5 minutes time..

I am in the process of producing a show to make a more modern LED version that should air on the channel around mid March. If you don't have a light box or aren't sure how to make one, you can always tape your photos up to a window and use the natural light from outside. It will work just the same. I hope this helps. For a pattern like this Ethan, I use a reverse tooth blade and the size would be a 2/0 or a 2R. The brand is Olson and they are available at most woodworking suppliers. Here's a link to the supplier I use.

is that a quick release blade( does it stipple or cut the wood) was it a mod done to the machine or comes like this.. thanks ( sorry if already been asked a ton)

    • @acutabove_woodworkings

It cuts the wood and it came like it. Most scroll saws have tool-less blade changes that make changing out the blade nice and simple. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in to the show.

I am currently working with an Excalibur EX-30, 30" scroll saw. They are no longer in production under the Excalibur branding but are now available under the name of Excelsior and are manufactured by King Canada. If you do a little internet searching, the Excalibur is still available in some areas as older stock. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in.

For this project Om, I used 1/4" thick hardboard which is available at your local big box store but honestly any 1/4" thick material would work. Plywood is also fine as is MDF. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in and good luck on your project.

    • @acutabove_woodworkings

The final image IS the wood Hamid. I painted the scrolling with flat white spray paint and then glued a backer board onto it that was painted with flat black spray paint. The black and white image is a photo of the project. So you already have seen the finished wooden product. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in.

Hi if you can print out a photo why cant you print out a pattern? Saves time right.

    • @acutabove_woodworkings
      @acutabove_woodworkings  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Well you certainly could print out a pattern if you have one drawn out. Printing out the picture does nothing for actually cutting the pattern and the picture is used to make the pattern. If you are good enough to draw out the pattern on the computer, then by all means, feel free to do that. As for saving time? There's never a time in woodworking where you should be in a hurry. It's all about patience. Thanks for tuning in to the show.

Actually, I did finish Patrick. That black and white portrait cutting that I show is the project. I cut the pattern out of a piece of hardboard and painted it white. I then backed it with another piece of hard board and painted it black. If you wanted to cut it out of solid stock, you could certainly do that and it would look great but this project (for me) was intended to be painted hard board from the beginning. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in.
