Replication vs Backup

  • Data protection can be challenging since virtualized applications typically have various recovery point and recovery time (RPO/RTO) objectives. Replication provides applications with near zero RPOs and when configured with redundant server infrastructure, it can also provide near instantaneous RTO. But as we discuss in the following ChalkTalk video, backups remain an essential part of the data protection process or “continuum”
Backup is often referred to as the data protection copy of last resort. It gives businesses a relatively low cost way to protect data safely and securely. But backups typically are a once a day process and some applications require more frequent data protection “events” to allow them to minimize data loss and ideally to also minimize downtime. In the video, we discuss how businesses need to approach data protection as a continuum.
On one end of the continuum, there is a need to ensure that data is efficiently and universally protected across the environment. This could be delivered through a VMware integrated deduplication solution that protects data once a night. On the other end of the continuum could also be a VMware integrated replication technology that allows businesses to continuously protect data based on the specific RPO needs of the application.
The key to providing these capabilities are data protection technologies that integrate directly into the VMware hypervisor and vCenter to allow administrators to not only monitor and manage all data protection jobs and processes, but also to leverage them together for increased efficiencies and operational simplicity. For example, a replicated data protection copy could be used by the backup application to facilitate off site and off host deduplicated backups. As virtualized environments grow and become increasingly 24x7xforever, this type of fine grained control of the data protection process may become essential.

Needs acronym dictionary. DR == Disaster Recovery, etc.

      Agreed what is rto rpo?
