Funny you should say that there was a teacher in my highschool that covered the Belfast movement in Europe in the 80s and the punk movement was in its high stages at the time.Much about the unemployment and anti nuclear issue.This was the most engageing and open conversation about world politics and it all stemmed from the underground movement.The best coolest and most educated teacher i ever knew.Very few in our political science class caught on to the conversation but i thank the punk scene for being my mentor on the issue.
If I had seen this in school I promise I would probably have been worse off, I LOVE Fear, but I’m really glad I decided until the age of 27 to make that decision

One of the things I loved about being a punk was that you didn't just go to SEE a show...you BECAME PART of the show. I went to gigs in Long Beach / L.A. from 84 through 90...best experience ever...did my share of slamming, stage diving and bouncing at least a few FEAR shows (about the time 'More Beer' came out). Unreal band.
First time I ever heard sax in a hardcore punk band. And then Lee did some ad lib soul singing at the intro, or at least attempted to. Kudos to them for being so unique. I loved Lee's collaboration with Dave Mustaine on that MD45 album.
Imagine Friday night watching the first ever broadcast of Halloween, Saturday night seeing Halloween 2 in the theater and then watching this knowing the movie’s star is the special guest. What a perfect weekend I’d imagine.

They were actually banned because an audience member screamed "Fuck NY" into the mic after the second song. That's why the camera was cut during "Let's Have a War"; some mucky muck from NBC heard that and ordered the telecast to be aborted.
No matter what the damages cost, losing your license to broadcast is much more expensive, so I'm sure NBC could care less about the pocket change and cared more about the "Fuck NY" comment.
I saw this on television as small child. For many years it was never played on reruns or anything and I just had this vague recollection of it. This is definitely my first exposure to hardcore. My mom also played Rock N Roll Highschool for me when I was a kid. Definitely the 2 things in my subconscious that pushed me into punk later on. Although I wouldn't realize that until way later.
This is why their peers called them musos. They were awesome. I don''t know what was notorious about this gig (maybe to a suburban mom) but it sure showed perfectly what made Hardcore so great.
FEAR was a bunch of intellectual punks who partied at Philo Kramer & John Clancy's "Hell House" in Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley. One word defined Hell House - BEER! I knew Philo, John, & Derf Scratch pretty well - we used to jam together. They were gnarly kewel Val Punks - and very intelligent. Fear was the Mothers of Invention of Punk Rock. Shear genius.
John recorded their first demo, which has recently been released on vinyl, thanks to Lee's somewhat newfound love affair with merchandising. Around ten years ago he asked me to mail him copies of the 30 or 40 FEAR live recordings in my collection as he wanted to put a compilation together, promising to pay me back for the postage and send some signed records back as thanks. Somewhat unsurprisingly, he ended up doing neither. Ah well!

The producers had Donald Pleasence hosting because it was October 31st and he was promoting Halloween II. The year before, Christopher Lee had been on the Halloween episode and it drew record numbers for the show. So the producers were hoping to repeat the success. I agree about the 40th anniversary. In fact, I thought they would show the clips from it. This episode hasn't never been re-aired in its entirety. In addition to the FEAR incident, there were a bunch of bizarre skits written by Michael O'Donaghue that were deemed unsuitable for television.
Lee Ving! At the On Broadway back in the day there was a spit fight. He scraped the spit off his face and put it back in his mouth and spit it back at the crowd! So hard core!
Los Angeles was hands down the best scene in hardcore In the early 80s no denying it, the southern California suburbs and beaches were breeding grounds for the ideal American punker, young, middle class, bored and frustrated.

I was part of the scene here in Texas (we held our own, MDC, The Dicks, DRI, Stickmen with Rayguns, Butthole Surfers, etc. The latter not hardcore, but still pretty bad-ass. However, combine the Texas scene with NYC, Phoneix, SF/Oakland, and it could not hold a candle to LA. I toured with Black Flag 84, and Descendants in 85 (I know Stevenson)so got to see different cities. Basically a city had a scene or it did not. Of course Black Flag always claimed Redando Beach. I saw FEAR many times. They were influenced by Texas Punk. Just like X was. We took what was coming from that NY/HC scene (Agnostic Front, Beastie Boys - yes, them - and do what we always do. Gave it some swagger. ;-) Like we do with everything here, we took it and gave it swagger. Damn, I was young...I was living in JFAs bus when I was 16. Ha ha Bam Bam cool guy, Brian Bohanon not so much. But yeah, you see one FEAR show you saw them all.

I'd have to say Utah is more of an ideal place for a hardcore scene to develop. Growing up in a state ruled by a backwards conservative religion is an ideal place for kids to rebel against the authority that pushed so many of us around.
I'm 35, Lee Ving's appearance in Clue was my first introduction, then the film SLC Punk which had a song of theirs, then this episode when I hunted down and watched the entire series
What's interesting to note is FEAR had yet to release any official album yet. Their debut album only came out the following year and they already had such an intense reputation. I guess these were the days of tape trading of bootlegs..

This is beyond great! I actually had a chance to talk and hang out with Lee, about 15 years ago and he talked about this. John Belushi dug FEAR, and they played, at his specific request. It definitely got out of hand, insofar as the level of 'crazy' that the SNL staff was accustomed to, and the set was cut short. I don't think SNL has EVER had anything this cool grace their stage!!!
I do not have to imagine it. I just happened to be watching SNL that night, and was tripping on acid. I had never heard of Fear before, and had never seen stage diving. It was incredible. I could not stop laughing for an hour.
I just saw them open for the Misfits last night. Lee said they were gonna play one more song, then said the fire marshal said they had to end their set right then. He turned to walk offstage, then came back and said, "nah, fuck the fire marshal, we're playing one more." They cut the sound immediately, but it was awesome of him. He's in his 70s, but still gave it 100% and they put on a great show.

This is a thing of absolute beauty...and,contrary to popular belief,the tapes have NOT been scrubbed.......if you're lucky enough to find a cable channel that airs the old S.N.L. episodes,this IS still available in syndication...I know,because,I recorded a copy,about 10 years ago.

First time I ever heard sax in a hardcore punk band. And then Lee did some ad lib soul singing at the intro, or at least attempted to. Kudos to them for being so unique. I loved Lee's collaboration with Dave Mustaine on that MD45 album.
The soul singing is on the album, if we're thinking of the same "low down skagadoo" line....

Imagine Friday night watching the first ever broadcast of Halloween, Saturday night seeing Halloween 2 in the theater and then watching this knowing the movie’s star is the special guest. What a perfect weekend I’d imagine.

Punk has always been dangerous, you just don't hear it because it's not on the radio. Go find your local punk shows. They are usually DIY and basement shows, but all are welcome, as long as you're not a cop or a fascist.

Some say it was the Beatles on Ed Sullivan. Others may say it was Agnostic Front on the Uncle Floyd Show...or maybe you may be one of those "strange mo-fos" who feel it was the first time seeing Dread Zeppelin playing on TV...but to many of us...THIS was the defining moment in our musical interests growing up.

I saw Dread Zeppelin on my tv. They were in a movie called Last Resort.
They were banned from SNL for this one haha, worth it.
They were actually banned because an audience member screamed "Fuck NY" into the mic after the second song. That's why the camera was cut during "Let's Have a War"; some mucky muck from NBC heard that and ordered the telecast to be aborted.

I saw this on television as small child. For many years it was never played on reruns or anything and I just had this vague recollection of it. This is definitely my first exposure to hardcore. My mom also played Rock N Roll Highschool for me when I was a kid. Definitely the 2 things in my subconscious that pushed me into punk later on. Although I wouldn't realize that until way later.
This is why their peers called them musos. They were awesome. I don''t know what was notorious about this gig (maybe to a suburban mom) but it sure showed perfectly what made Hardcore so great.

FEAR was a bunch of intellectual punks who partied at Philo Kramer & John Clancy's "Hell House" in Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley. One word defined Hell House - BEER! I knew Philo, John, & Derf Scratch pretty well - we used to jam together. They were gnarly kewel Val Punks - and very intelligent. Fear was the Mothers of Invention of Punk Rock. Shear genius.

John recorded their first demo, which has recently been released on vinyl, thanks to Lee's somewhat newfound love affair with merchandising. Around ten years ago he asked me to mail him copies of the 30 or 40 FEAR live recordings in my collection as he wanted to put a compilation together, promising to pay me back for the postage and send some signed records back as thanks. Somewhat unsurprisingly, he ended up doing neither. Ah well!

The audience is the best. No standing behind a fence and just nodding their heads, the music is making them hyper and they're actually moving.

They should've aired this for the Saturday Night Live 40th Anniversary. That would've been epic, especially since this was when John Belushi hosted the show after leaving as a permanent cast member.

+lowendtheorystudios No, Belushi didn't host this one. However, it was his final appearance on SNL. The producers had Donald Pleasence hosting because it was October 31st and he was promoting Halloween II. The year before, Christopher Lee had been on the Halloween episode and it drew record numbers for the show. So the producers were hoping to repeat the success.
I agree about the 40th anniversary. In fact, I thought they would show the clips from it. This episode hasn't never been re-aired in its entirety. In addition to the FEAR incident, there were a bunch of bizarre skits written by Michael O'Donaghue that were deemed unsuitable for television.
Well, it looks like Belushi shared some of his Bolivian marching powder with Donald Pleasance at least. Maybe a lot.

Los Angeles was hands down the best scene in hardcore In the early 80s no denying it, the southern California suburbs and beaches were breeding grounds for the ideal American punker, young, middle class, bored and frustrated.

I was part of the scene here in Texas (we held our own, MDC, The Dicks, DRI, Stickmen with Rayguns, Butthole Surfers, etc. The latter not hardcore, but still pretty bad-ass. However, combine the Texas scene with NYC, Phoneix, SF/Oakland, and it could not hold a candle to LA. I toured with Black Flag 84, and Descendants in 85 (I know Stevenson)so got to see different cities. Basically a city had a scene or it did not. Of course Black Flag always claimed Redando Beach. I saw FEAR many times. They were influenced by Texas Punk. Just like X was. We took what was coming from that NY/HC scene (Agnostic Front, Beastie Boys - yes, them - and do what we always do. Gave it some swagger. ;-) Like we do with everything here, we took it and gave it swagger. Damn, I was young...I was living in JFAs bus when I was 16. Ha ha Bam Bam cool guy, Brian Bohanon not so much.
But yeah, you see one FEAR show you saw them all.

hey I was there thru it all. in 51 now and still go to every show I can. gonna see Batallion of Saints soon, D.I. and the Grim prior to that. fuckin love punk rock root hog or die. just learned that a fellow kid of the 80's and fellow Skinhead has hung himself , our ranks grow thinner. thinner. I don't know what I would do without punk , I honestly think id be dead or have some kinda cancer shit. LA was the shit back then but at the same time there were soo many "punks for a month" that it was becoming really lame , it made me want to punch and kick people so me and a buddy shaved our heads ,invested in some Docs and red suspenders and went to work. I am not proud to admit it but me and my friends were part of the reason punk took a short shit for a few years ( no more clubs ,no more shows, black flag going arena rock and shit bands like fugazi .. it was dark times let me tell you).

I'd have to say Utah is more of an ideal place for a hardcore scene to develop. Growing up in a state ruled by a backwards conservative religion is an ideal place for kids to rebel against the authority that pushed so many of us around.
NY hardcore scene was 1000 better than LA, whereas a bunch of rich kids posing to be punk.
The only SNL that was worth watching and the beginning of the end of my childhood innocense.

I'm 35, Lee Ving's appearance in Clue was my first introduction, then the film SLC Punk which had a song of theirs, then this episode when I hunted down and watched the entire series

Without Spit Stix on the kit there sound would be completely different, talk about a legendary punk drummer. Listen to his bass drum, flawless.

The rest of the band can suck, but, you need a good drummer. They actually sounded relatively good.
One of my all time favorite drummers. I would rehearse as a kid listening to FEAR and his drumming.
He had his own sound, that's for sure. Hyperspeed fills and great bass pedal.
He has a D-beat style that I think Discharge kinda made famous or something like that . Killer drummer one of my faves for sure.

What's interesting to note is FEAR had yet to release any official album yet. Their debut album only came out the following year and they already had such an intense reputation. I guess these were the days of tape trading of bootlegs..

This is beyond great! I actually had a chance to talk and hang out with Lee, about 15 years ago and he talked about this. John Belushi dug FEAR, and they played, at his specific request. It definitely got out of hand, insofar as the level of 'crazy' that the SNL staff was accustomed to, and the set was cut short.
I don't think SNL has EVER had anything this cool grace their stage!!!

I had never heard of Fear before, and had never seen stage diving.
It was incredible. I could not stop laughing for an hour.

I just saw them open for the Misfits last night. Lee said they were gonna play one more song, then said the fire marshal said they had to end their set right then. He turned to walk offstage, then came back and said, "nah, fuck the fire marshal, we're playing one more."
They cut the sound immediately, but it was awesome of him. He's in his 70s, but still gave it 100% and they put on a great show.

@@Ghoulische it's was awesome. I saw a lot of great classic punk bands last year, so they were a nice addition. I got to see the Misfits, Fear, Black Flag (met Greg), The Dickies, TSOL, and Total Chaos.
This is a thing of absolute beauty...and,contrary to popular belief,the tapes have NOT been scrubbed.......if you're lucky enough to find a cable channel that airs the old S.N.L. episodes,this IS still available in syndication...I know,because,I recorded a copy,about 10 years ago.
If I had a time machine this would be the first place I would go over and over
