I saw Procol Harum perform this live in 1968 a few months after it was No 1 in the UK charts for 6 weeks in 1967, instrumentally Lucy’s version is based on the cover version by Annie Lennox in 1995. As always Lucy puts her unique spin on it!
Hello Philip, this was number 1 in the charts in 1967 by Procal Harum a British Group, this rendition Lucy made it her own version, I loved this version by Lucy it has over 2 million views in 4 months since she covered it. Take care, Barbara.
Hi Philip, I remember this song being played on the arm forces radio in Vietnam. There is no meaning to the lyrics. Lucy shines with her lower register in this song. You’re right it is haunting to some degree. Very good review Philip. Take care stay free, healthy, and safe.
Hi Phillip! Thanks for reacting to this. IMO one of the all-time iconic songs from the 60's. You used the word "haunting" - I think that certainly applies - this is a hauntingly beautiful song. Never thought it really could be covered in a satisfactory manner but I have learned over the past few years that Lucy Thomas can do anything vocally & do it better than anyone else. As mentioned already - this is more a cover of the Annie Lennox cover from the 90's than it is of the original She is low register thru much of this performance and I found that to be magical. Procol Harum popped up in 2006 and did a live version in Denmark - accompanied by the Danish National Symphony & Choir - I recommend you check that out when you can - it is a tremendous LIVE performance. As far as Lucy have you had a chance to look at "Fix you" or "Brand New Day" yet?? As always - great stuff Phillip! Thx!
You have to put the song in the context of the times: end of the sixties, vietnam war, hippies flying high on some forbidden plants, flowers on guns etc.... Do not try to understand the lirycs, even the writer did not know. What left is a beautyful melody of words and music . Simply enjoy the song particularly with this Lucy version ❤🥰👏👍
Wonderful interpretation of Lucy, original sound was "leslie-organ-sound", but Lucy always makes "her beautiful cover" and no one is disapointed about her versions...it is done great with her lower register and " old fashion has to be made modern " 🙂👌❣take care!
