    My Daddy had just passed away and my Mother was buried under a mountain of grief. I took her to this Rush concert. She had a Panasonic stereo with these massive Bose speakers. She went straight down the Rush rabbit hole and overcame the worst of her grief. I love Rush,but I especially love them for helping her through.

      Wow! Pretty cool. I was lucky enough to grow up with RUSH. I'd heard their 1st album and when Fly By Night came out and my brother's friend brought the new Vinyl over and put it on the 'HI-FI', I adopted them as 'MY BAND', and they've been an actual part of my life ever since!! Tell 'MOM' all the Rushies say, 'HI'!

      I've never thought of Rush as being prog, there was a period of evolution with them but at the heart they have always been a 3 piece rock band.

    • @leehanson1416
      @leehanson1416 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      At this point, they pretty much defined Prog Rock.

    • @fretless05
      @fretless05 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@leehanson1416 I was going to say the same; Prog Rock was a movement of many bands trying to catch the same magical lightning that Rush put out. They weren't Prog Rock, but kind of invented it.

    A truly unique and virtuoso band. They’re funny too! Their sense of humor is legendary. The whole RUSH scene is one of the most fun out there. You are in for a ride. Believe That! Read the lyrics, they are saying something. No dummies in a RUSH crowd. Neil isn’t called the Professor for nothing.

    As a life lond RUSH fan, seeing you respond to this.....made me thinking of meeting my wife 35 years ago and the first song she heard and sang to was " LIMELIGHT". Since then we have travelled far and wide by plane and road trips for concerts she bought the tickets and planned! I am truly a lucky man and RUSH FAN!!! She was one of those seven ladies at a RUSH concert! Peace.

    "I can't pretend a stranger is a long awaited friend."
    This is my favourite Rush song, because I'm an introvert as Neil was, so I can identify with his lyrical description of how he struggled with being in the spotlight and having all these strangers approaching him like they were his friends who knew everything about him. Being introverted does not mean that we're shy, which is a common misconception; it simply means that because our mental energy is more easily drained by too much stimulation, we need those periods of quiet solitude to recharge so that we can function in a society that idealizes extroverts, and we prefer to invest our energy in making meaningful connections with a select group of close friends, colleagues, and loved ones. Geddy and Alex recognized that Neil was special right from his first audition in front of them, and they mainly handled the band's social engagements because they also recognized and respected his introverted nature as an integral part of who he was and what made him so great at what he did. As an example of how truly gifted we can be, I recommend Neil's Live In Frankfurt Drum Solo from 2001.
    Neil Peart R.I.P 🥁 🥁 🐐 🐐

    • @RushfanUK
      @RushfanUK 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think Neil was an introvert he just didn't like the fame aspect of being a musician and the way some fans behaved, one incident in particular in the UK really upset him when a fan got access to his tour bus and was quite belligerent.

    • @jonlate4581
      @jonlate4581 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats a great line. It refers to people just coming to him saying, 'hey, Neil....' he has no idea who these people are and didn't feel comfortable. The guy was REALLY shy.

    • @jonlate4581
      @jonlate4581 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      He's said in interviews he's just never understood the obsession with meeting famous people. That's cool, but more people like to get autographs, maybe a picture.

    • @0okamino
      @0okamino 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sometimes you just want to personally tell someone who has made you so happy and inspired you that they did so. I respect the desire Neil had for his privacy, but I also understand that fan desire. I know some can really go overboard as a fan, though.

    They just retired in 2015 and had been doing it full on since the early 70’s! Sadly, the drummer passed away 2 years ago. They leave a legacy of excellence. RUSH is it’s own thing. A very good thing. 👍

    2. Appreciates Al's unique guitar ✔️
    3. Air drumming within 30 seconds ✔️
    Welcome to the family! 😁 You'll find most Rush fans to be super nice, generous with band info (40+ years of fandom and you tend to pick up a thing or ten) and fanatically loyal- but in a good way, I swear 🙄🤣. You definitely won't regret exploring this rabbit hole!

    Instant RUSH fan! You have discovered what has been known to millions of RUSH fans for decades. You are now RUSH ARMY, I can tell.
    This band is extremely talented in all their ways. 3 guys from Canada. That’s right 3 men. This band and their fans are very special people. One of THE TOP TIER ROCK BANDS of all time. Not just my opinion either.
    Neil Peart writes incredible lyrics (you need the words for this band) and is considered by many to the best drummer in the world. He’s up there on a very short list. Geddy sings, plays bass and keyboards, Alex makes the guitar sing and occasionally adds some backing vocals. Truly incredible band with 3 of the very best musicians to ever do it. I’ve seen them live in concert 18 times over the years. I have a feeling the number 2112 is in your future. You have found one of the most satisfying rabbit holes you will EVER experience. Like I said, welcome to the RUSH ARMY.

    So many have described Rush better than I can. Apart from the lyrics and the virtuoso musicianship, I think one of the most important aspects of Rush's music is the quality of their compositions and, in particular, how they transition from theme to theme, how they frequently (and seemingly effortlessly) employ multiple time signatures, how they used instrumental interludes in their songs to showcase their individual mastery of their instruments or themes in the lyrics, how they generously and without ego allowed each other to feature, how they returned to and repeated musical themes, how they managed with only three musicians to create a massive sound, and how each of their parts complimented the performance of the others and integrated seamlessly. Their creative outpouring from 1976 through 1984 (particularly, 2112, A Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, and Signals) was the greatest series of compositions by a single rock band ever before or since. I urge you to react to more Rush from this period, and keep these attributes in mind. Happy listening!

    *The Camera Eye* is my favorite Rush song, and I'm convinced the only reason it doesn't get more attention is because it's eleven minutes long.

    These guys are bananas....their proficiency on their respective instruments was their "thing"....difficult rewarding musicianship along with "thinker" lyrics set them apart, created their own lane. A real fun exercise is to watch Rick Beato break down RUSH songs (this song and others). It gives you a more nuanced understanding more rapidly.

    I've watched quite a few of these reaction videos and I must say that it really warms my heart to see the absolutely amazed expressions of the listeners. I remember discovering Rush in about 1980 and I was blown away. I've been fortunate enough to see them perform live many times and even meet them twice. They were very down to earth and gracious hosts, true gentlemen. What amazes me is that there are a lot of first time Rush reactions on TH-cam and I just can't understand HOW HOW HOW could you have never heard Rush before now???? HOW????

  • @BalokLives

    I was lucky. I was blessed to be coming up at the exact same time Rush was. I was introduced to Rush when their first album was released, and I never looked back. I was also fortunate to have seen Rush live 10+ times (I think it was closer to 20, but I lost track). Although Rush songs exist that I am not fond of, there aren't very many of them. Rush is one of those rare bands that can make anything sound good. Trust me when I tell you that they sound even better live. Exit Stage Left was one of the best most amazing concerts ever. But to be totally honest, Rush never disappointed me live. I always left their concerts in awe of the amazing talent I had just witnessed on stage. They are all fantastic musicians, and you can't go wrong with any of their albums. I have heard them all from their premier album "Rush" to their farewell album "Clockwork Angels". Listen to "The Garden". Last song on their last album. Forty years of amazing music right to the very end. Couldn't have happened to nicer guys either.

    Rush is a premier band producing works of great musical arrangements, musicianship, and lyrical content. These guys took their craft seriously, but not themselves--some of the goofiest, fun-loving guys you'll meet. For me, from Caress of Steel to Power Windows, you get more bang for your buck than most bands can give you over an entire career. One of my top five bands of all time. RUSH!

    Im 55 and have been hooked on RUSH for 40 years. Ive seen them 9 times live and have never been disappointed. The masterpieces, in my opinion, are the early long tracks. Xanadu, La Villa Strangiato, The Camera Eye, Different Strings, always the entire side 1 (yes i first heard them on vinyl) of 2112, A Farewell to Kings, that one speaks to me like Mr. Peart was talking about our current leaders in gov. So many awesome pieces of music. Hemisheres, Natural science, to name my favorites. But there are a great many great tracks after that era that are air instrument worthy. 🤘

    Save "The Camera Eye" for much later in your Rush exploration. You'll appreciate the genius more.

    That entire album was required listening when I was a 12 year old boy. Been a favorite ever since. Btw, I appreciate your approach in the videos, just listening without looking up this or that.

    Neil and his lyrics were such a great addition to this band and to allow a non original member to take lead on writing shows that it wasn't about ego with these legends! Xanadu is a must - so is 2112 and all of Moving Pictures!

    I've been hooked for 40 years.
    These lyrics reflects Peart's discomfort with being a rock celebrity. "I can't pretend a stranger is a long-awaited friend."
    The thing I find most amazing about Rush is I feel almost like I'm soaring over the song. That's what's Lifeson's guitar work does for me.
    Check out, from the same album, "Mystic Rhythms." Very, very (I hate to use this word because it has been so badly abused lately, but I can't think of a better one) meta.
    I grew up in an incredible time for music. I consider being there for Rush's career a privilege.

    That one note that resonates at the end of the solo, I just found, he bought one Amp head just for that note, pretty incredible.

    Definitely do the Official music video of Tom Sawyer. Then you will SEE what we are talking about. It’s killer!
    It’s them recording in the studio playing the song. Awesome video.
    It’s going to mess you up. It’s blown minds across a lot of channels.

    My initial reaction to your initial reaction is " you have such a long rush journey ahead of you." I havent looked at your channel yet to see if you rushed more .
    I suggest as many others probably have 2112, zanadu, yyz, la villa strangiato.
    Reading the lyrics to 2112 would be a plus.
    Welcome to the trio that is RUSH

    Unique? Yes. Fitting for what Rush does? Also yes.

    Congratulations on finding a Deep Rich vein in the rock & roll gold mine. I hope you will enjoy your Rush journey. So many hours of great music and Amazing performances by three Virtuoso musicians. The lyrics are thought provoking and musical riff's are infectious. You will be air drumming in no time.
    There are a lot of good suggestions in the comments section below on what to listen to next. For a novice I would suggest the following:
    Tom Sawyer (already on your list)
    The Spirit of Radio
    YYZ Live in Rio
    Xanadu Live (Exit Stage Left 1981)
    Subdivisions
    Fly By Night (1975)
    There are many many more but starting with the above will be a good introduction.
