Just a quick disclaimer: Some of the election results wary from source to source and therefore there can be some discrepancies between the numbers in the video and the numbers you find. We attempted to use the numbers which seem most probable. Hope you enjoy the videos!
Question: How do sources come up with election numbers that aren't asked on the ballot, like the voter's employment status? My understanding is that high-quality political polling started after the 1930s, so it seems like a tough task to narrow down things like demographic-specific results that aren't recorded officially. Was there actual polling at the time? Were the pollsters independent, or aligned with specific parties? I love how this series juxtaposes the takes of different politically-aligned newspapers, so it would be interesting to hear about how the different groups in the Weimar republic understood even something as simple as the result of the election!
German Historian working for the IFZ in Munich here. Don't worry about it, you did a good Job! Even as a German i naturally love Perfection and the exact Results, but this gives the overall Picture out just fine! Also i want to add that from Documents, Letters etc. i researched the past 10 Years, a ton of Germans in 1930 who voted for Hitler had the Attitude of "We gonna vote for that National-Socialist Guy" and others were "We vote for that Communist Guy" but in fact did that more as a "Protest Vote" hoping the Establishment would get the Message. @@LizzyMeyer-g1dthere’s no data on that, which is not astonishing considering that they were a tiny minority. Only about 1.5% of the population were of Jewish heritage, and not all of them identified as Jewish. The data on Protestant and Catholic votes are extrapolated from the percentage of each denomination in a region. So we don’t actually know how they voted, but given that we know their share of population we can make a reasonable deduction. With small percentages like the Jewish population this is not possible.
@@marionlara428like in my previous answer: by looking at regional results and the demographic of each region we can deduce the demography of the vote. You see alot of people comparing the modern united states to this period of german history. Seeing this episode in particular shows you just how wildly polarized Germany was and just how far the US or any of the worlds developed Democracies are from this critical mass of political divisiveness. Its kind of relieving
Relative to modern political standards, the US is very much not miles away from 1930's Germany. The far right has completely taken over the Republican party's leadership. Yes, there's still technically moderate Republicans in Congress, but they almost always bend the knee to the far right when it comes down to it. The left isn't quite as extreme, but the Democrats have a super shaky coalition essentially, with progressives constantly and rampantly shitting on Democrats and telling everybody they suck and aren't worth voting for/aren't any different from Republicans, all of which just helps Republicans and the far right. It's still all churning towards a very similar situation, and if left leaners cant band together and realize we're largely on the same side as each other, then the right is going to dominate and enact ever more anti-democracy and anti-rights rules/legislation, while eradicating social safety nets and legalizing or at least heavily encouraging discrimination of those they dont like.

After the war all the german generals claim they were excellent strategic minds and their defeats were all due to Hitler's mistakes, micromanaging, etc. While this is certainly an exaggeration, I wonder how much truth there is to this statement. Having completed the week by week through 1945, there are a lot of instances where this narrative does seem to fit the facts. For example, Hitler not authorizing common sense withdrawls, micromanaging case blue and creating a traffic jam in 1942, getting obsessed over stalingrad, etc. However in hindsight, I imagine it would also be easy for german generals to say all their bad ideas were actually from Hitler, so there is also the factor of trusting our sources. I know the generals were all eager to clean up their reputations. Anyways, I would appreciate TimeGhosts thoughts here. I think this is a good idea for a video, especially now that the war weeks have ended. But I am grateful for any response I get. Is the channel going to do a special, or have they done it already, regarding Hindenberg's role in all this? When Sparty says "Hindenberg really doesn't want the social democrats anywhere near the wheel", despite having a large portion of the vote, Hindenberg will doesn't want them in charge. I won't entirely spoil it but he has a huge role to play further down the line in this story and it feels like his dislike for the SPD is a major portion of how this all came to be. Could this have been averted if he allowed a coalition with the pro democracy parties and the economy party? Also, remind me, Hindeberg as president, is he elected or appointed, and does he have final approval on the government regardless of the coalitions?
Little theory, I wonder if the Catholic parties had more loyalty owing to be a minority in Germany, and having experienced degrees of state suppression previously say during Bismark's Kulturkampf.
