I can understand why they condensed this to the whole story of the series is put into one season. Netflix being all canceling shows regardless of how good they’re doing does put that fear into a very big perspective especially animation.
It was the creator's decision, not Netflix. They originally wanted to adapt the comic, but the creator didn't want to retell the same story again, so he went into a different direction and it worked.
@@otherprisma7354plus knowing Netflix cancelling shows that actually are great like inside job and other shows. Yet they milk a show that has lots of issues(big mouth cough cough)
@@otherprisma7354 OK didn’t know that thank you for that but that wasn’t what I was referring to. the fact that, even if this is a separate story, from what I’ve heard, the majority of it is condensed into the one season so that way case if it doesn’t make a second season, there’s no cliffhangers
To me it makes sense. This way its a reason for people to buy the comics as one thing, and then the anime and moves and whatever else as another. More incentive for people to buy more. So can't be mad at the creator for it as its a sound business strategy.@@otherprisma7354
Fun fact. The comic creator confirmed this and each older versions are alternate timelines. He said comic book Scott and Remona don't show up at all in this because they overcame all thier issues and problems at the end of the comics which made them perfectly together after the end of the comics. Basically they were the married ones but never divorced or any relationship issues at all with thier future together.
The idea of timelines in this sense really bothers me. I mean, different things happen in different stories. I think the fact that this anime tells a very different and contradictory story is a pretty good indicator that it's not the same 'timeline'. Why do we even need it spelled out and structured like that? Does it have to be that anal retentive?
I loved how this show really explored the characters of the evil exes. Especially Matthew Patel and Roxie! It’s a shame the twins didn’t have that much screen time despite being so important, though.
Honestly for me, I just blame the marketing. They marketed it as it was going to be an adaption of the comic and it wasn’t. But honestly, once I got over the initial shock, I was able to enjoy it for what it was. However it did make me a little sad. I wanted to show this adaption to my friend who has never read the comic but I feel like he wouldn’t enjoy it. I feel like I only enjoyed it because I liked the characters due to the comics.
Some of my classmates who are anime fans are interested in watching the show but they did not like it and they were in total shock when I told them it has a movie. Not everyone knows about Scott Pilgrim
See I think that they were able to keep the real narrative under wraps was genius. These days a lot of marketing leaves little to the imagination and we almost know or can at least predict exactly everything that's going to happen in a show based off the marketing. The fact that they subverted our expectations I thought was refreshing. Even the title "takes off" has a double meaning as scott literally disappears for half the show.
@@kingbushybeard6543The problem was that it has already been done before and it didn't stick the landing like what the producers would've wanted to like what happened to the He-Man and She-Ra reboot. The expectations of the producers were either far-off or underestimated in terms of audience reception. If the marketing of this show has subtle hints with the change of the plot rather or straight up being honest about it than hiding it completely, then intrigue would've been produced by the audience towards the show rather than a faithful adaptation like what they expected.
I wouldn't mind if every Scott Pilgrim media starts with "Scott Pilgrim is dating a high-schooler" and then do whatever the media wants with it as long as they make the characters and the world justice. Now I want a new Scott Pilgrim game; specifically an RPG.
it really shouldn't, the movie is only different by time restraints and this is just a willful butchering of the characters to downplay and remove scott with cheap marketing
@@obsiangravel Apparently so, and they're posting under every comment to make that known - as if speaking more will lessen the idiocy of their statements :V

As someone who wanted to watch this as my first introduction to Scott Pilgrim. It took me four episodes to realize it wasn't the original story (still enjoyed them regardless). HOWEVER, After watching the movie and reading the volumes. I went back into it and loved it. It's like a New Game + Alternate Route (Secret Boss Unlocked) version of the story. I like it a lot. Though hopefully maybe we can get that true adaptation later.
Yes, same deal here. Episode 4 is where they really get blunt with the fact that this is not how the original goes. Until then I was just scratching my head as to why Scott Pilgrim was barely in the show when he's supposedly the main character.
It’s good, but I was expecting a full adaptation of the comic and I can’t help but be disappointed. Like there is so much stuff that has never been adapted from the comic and that’s just sad to me. Once I get used to the fact that this isn’t a adaptation of the comic, I’ll probably enjoy it s lot more
That’s the issue, yes it’s a good show and it’s enjoyable but what they were marketing and advertising was not that they should have just said it was about Ramona from the start
I’m really happy that they went down the route of following Ramona, it was so satisfying to see her actually solve things with her ex’s herself, rather than have Scott fight them. It was interesting that they explored how Ramona kind of fucked up too and it’s better that she fix it.
Also showed how Scott in the future never saw nega Scott. So he never denounced and analyzed his past self, so he didn’t grow as much which we can see. I think Scott and Ramona get back together in almost every timeline though

I completely agree with everything you’ve said about this. From a more in-depth look at Ramona’s past, the closure for her and her exes, the visuals, and the break away from the same story we all know. The Lucas Lee fight with the skateboard is incredibly animated and honestly was my favorite part of the whole series. You can tell they put a lot of time in it, and I can’t help but appreciate that.
I loved it. It felt like the same story coming from a 30-year-old's perspective. O'Mally is no longer living in the moment like he was when he was in his 20s and with this version of the story he takes it from a more mature point of view. He starts asking questions people in their 30s ask. Where is this going? What have I done with my life? Was this a mistake? Was that? Was she a mistake? If I could go back and do it all again, would I? If I could go back in time and slap my younger self and say "don't do that one thing!" How much better would my life be? Seeing it from this perspective makes me not want to see a season 2, but it really makes me want him to try to tell another Scott and Ramona story when he's in his 40s... his 50s... even his 60s.
I was initially disappointed because I really wanted the Nega Scott arc to get animated, and I was really taken aback by the funeral scene. That said, after I got over it, and gave the show space to be what it was, I really enjoyed it and how it gave side characters more space to stretch out.
@@bella_ciao4608 Similar, but that Scott having to overcome his denial and facing how bad a person he actually used to be was a big part of what made the comic special. Old Scott feels more like a confirmation that this timeline’s Scott hasn’t significantly changed. The hope is that he will, after seeing how poorly things worked out for his future self.
@@emperortime4380 Honestly, the more I think about it, the more I really love Takes Off as an addition to the canon. Old Scott shows that simply acknowledging your shortcomings and mistakes isn't enough - you need to put in the hard work to actively *change*. Old Scott failed because he simply absorbed Nega Scott, resolving to not make the same mistakes... but then settled for that, not taking the extra effort to become better. He settled for just... not being worse. This newest, latest Scott should do even better, because, in facing Old Scott, he has faced *both* Nega Scott, AND himself. He's faced himself at his worst, AND at his "just good enough", and seen that self-improvement is something that you can't ever really 'finish'. (I also low-key love how Old Ramona and Super Ramona show that the blame isn't entirely on Scott - that the breakup is *also* on her for self-sabotaging and always running away from her problems. Because EVERYONE should always strive to be better, not *just* Scott. And now that both Scott AND Ramona have been through this, their "happily ever after" should, this time, TRULY be "ever after")

Just so you know, there have been multiple articles that a season 2 is currently not planned or in the works. This is allw e get for now, but its was a satisfying piece of art nonetheless!
This should have been a season two and the original season should have been based on the comic. I'm glad that it wasn't just ramona switched with scott where she has to beat up the exes 1 by 1, instead it's her having closure with each of them. I love Scott Pilgrim's story, and I also love this story. We all could use more things to love
Once you get past the dissapointment of it not being a 1-to-1 adaptation, it's pretty great. It still acknowledges the original story and even makes it feel like a continuation of the original.
Show turned out to be great in its own right, but I just wish the marketing had been more clear about this being a re-imagine rather than a 1:1 remake as the trailers led many to believe.

@@neoPeake i wouldnt say the anime isnt engaging, but i do agree with @patientprogrammer about the pacing. Ep 1 felt very rushed, but once u know ending, its understandable. Ep 2, ep 3 and ep 4 are pretty great. Ep 5 is more light hearted, i think some ppl dont like it but im okay with it. Here comes the problems. Ep 6 felt fast and slow at the same time @@. Gideon/Goose's story came out pretty lackluster, and the answer for the disappearance of scott pilgrim took too long. Ep 7 is pretty good, but i think they stuggle on how to get Scott back to the present. It felt unsatisfying, but great ending on a cliffhanger kinda made up for it. Ep 8 wasted too much time in the beginning and didnt picked up right away for some reasons. But overall, its still pretty good. Another pacing issues could lie in the jokes. I love the dialogue, they are great. But the jokes sometimes can felt very flat. Take the scene where Scott asked Julie about Ramona. Idk, it flowed very weirdly imo, compared to the movie. Other reasons might be because of the voice acting. Some voice actors are just so gud, like Ramona, Roxie and Knives, some are great, like Scott, Young Neil, Kim, some felt a bit flat, Stephen and Envy. The video even showed a scene here 1:28, the line was delivered pretty boring imo (this is changed if u go with the japanese dub, overall they felt better, but i connect more with the english dub cause they are still above average, VAs are from the movie and i can understand english (im vietnamese, english is important in my country)). Final point, i think they didnt use the anime medium to its fullest. Granted, the anime is animated beautifully. But the movie and the comic are pretty great at using their medium, especially with Edgar Wright directing the movie. The same thing didnt apply to the anime though.
I heard that there were some people who liked the anime's Japanese dub better than the English version--while the original version just brought back the main cast from the 2010 film adaptation, the Japanese version brought some pretty famous Japanese voice actors to dub the main characters.
Native English speakers saying the Japanese dub was better are just shameless weebs. They worship a language they can't even understand without subtitles.

for me, Takes Off felt like a wish granted for the fans and THEN SOME. The new perspectives, character dynamics and stories were a breath of fresh air. Flipping the story on Ramona, to make her go through her own journey of forgiveness and reconciliation, is a topic that a lot of people these days desperately need. Forgiveness makes friends. Resentment and anger makes us lonely.
@@Peasham I have no idea how you can actually complain about Scott Pilgrim being woke. This was a good show, and honestly an alternate timeline story really fits the universe. I get that it wasn't what some fans wanted but it was excellent and I wouldn't mind getting a continuation
The creators have said that each iteration of the Scott Pikgrim story is its own alternate universe. As someone with not much knowledge of Scott Pilgrim except for the basic plot of the movie, I was pleasantly surprised. The art style is just something to drool over cause its just so beautiful and I had no issues with the storyline. The show is a solid 9.5/10 and i would absolutely recommend it if you havent already watched it ❤
As far as I know/understand, there being different universes within Scott Pilgrim is actually a plot point in the original comic. So this explination (and thus all the adaptations) is 100% canon to the original comic.
Honestly I think this is more due to the issues of shows/games that have done this recently that have been pretty bad in the direction they go. Take Masters of the Universe Revelations and The Last of Us Part 2, where the marketing was heavily misleading and then became an insult to the fans of the IP. Even if Takes Off was good, the misleading marketing felt like it was gonna follow the trend of “bait and switch” that in past instances would have led to a worse product, and people are sick of that tactic
"You know this character you used to love, well this show is all about them!" **kills the character off in the first 10 minutes and switched to a new or different character, usually an extremely toxic and unlikable one** You know...People wouldn't be as mad, hell they'd actually give it a chance if for once they were just fucking honest and didn't pull another bait and switch to push a shitty fanfic This is trash, this is what talentless hacks who don't respect the source material do and unacceptable in every goddamn case. It could be the best piece of media ever made, but just pulling this trash makes me stop caring
I mean not to mention it's become a modern media trope at this point. I mean you mentioned Masters of the Universe Revelations, and The Last of Us Part 2, but I mean it's Mad Max Fury Road, Terminator Dark Fate... it falls into this mind set of "subvert expectations" crap that's been going on recently. Which sure sometimes can be good, but it's literally everywhere right now, and arguably when people aren't expecting it, or they are really hoping for something else, it does make people feel tricked, and sours the experience.
yup, another story butchering its characters to push ideology, no surprise if u see modern Bryan O' Malley pictures, drunk the cool aid and it shows Scotts is empty cause HES NOT EVEN IN THE STORY MAJORITY OF THE WAY Ramona is borderline a SUE that never really REJECTS or REMORSE from her bad actions of the past, she "acknowledges them" but in no meaningful way and it shows in how really she's the exact same compare to comics Gideon and Lucas both broken and emasculated and it shows Wallace just a ass here who's not even Scott's friend at all, even the movie did better his trope of turning every guy also is a bad stereotype Knives is barely in the story and ENVY is just worse than before none of them have a benefit in this show

Yeah, even Japanese media have been doing this shit in recent years. I don't like it and never will. Don't advertise something as an adaptation or remake if you're going to turn it into something else entirely, it will inevitably piss off a good portion of the audience. Of course many people won't care, but what about loyal fans who had a lot of expectations? Are our feelings not valid?
I love that the adaptation went in a different direction. There's like 3 other versions of the story we could experience (video game, books, and movie). The closure and fleshing out of the Wvil Exs was a good touch, side characters, and Future Scott was a good touch for the ending
I agree, thou Im abit bummed we didnt get an animation of the comic story in full, "Takes off" is still really good on its own. We see an alternative story where Gideon isnt complety deranged and has 6 ex gfs in cryo-storage and the "Glow" isnt a plot point (something the original author didnt like that much). Hell, Scott being the Villain makes alot of sense since its pretty easy to tell that he has traits and quality that most of the Evil Exes have.
never love when a IP uses your brand favoritism to make more money it purposefully lies to get you to watch it and worse its not good, one may like the visual look or other parts but the actual story is terrible and the characters are worse than before realize liking something doesn't make it good or a good excuse to butchering it

With Scott Pilgrim and how different the books are vs the movie vs the video game, I wasn't mad or anything about an entirely different take for the series. If anything, I was excited to experience another SP for the first time not knowing where it was going to go. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

I found it fun. If I wanted to see the og story it's on Netflix so I could anytime It was able to expand on the cast and give them a lot of development on top of removing that gross child dating plotline at the exact same time. Only negative I have is how strange the ending was with remona and Scott being old and Scott taking things too seriously while remona was very detached but it was a fun cartoon
That was, as the kids say, the point. Ramona always ran away from the people that loved her, a fault neither present nor future her ever faced prior to super Ramona.

Hardcore fan here. It was amazing. It felt like it was subverted expectations done right, which never happens. It was practically a sequel. I really dug it
As a fan of the original story, i think this improves sone issues i had, i always wanted to know and see more on the ex's, this did just that, which was perfect, i liked it alot
What? The books gave a lot of time to the ex's and they all had back stories. Each ex literally got a book dedicated to them essentially. Also it was a selective few of the ex's that I feel got expanded upon, or just better expressed. Namely Roxie, Lucas Lee, and Todd. The Twins, Envy, and Matthew got no real story arc in Takes Off. I mean Matthew ends up just being the new sub in for Gideon, and not much more. Also they did Knives Dirty cause she was relegated to a joke character, where as she had a whole books worth of development with her, an seeing how she went through phases with her break up with Scott. The original was a master piece, and even if Takes Off is a fun diversion, I just don't think it adds much.
As someone who wanted to like Scott Pilgrim, but couldn’t get past how much I just didn’t like Scott as a character, I loved this show! I loved how it explored the backgrounds and personalities of the evil Ex’s, and I loved getting to know ow Ramona more, and seeing her grow.
At first I was kind of disappointed it wasn’t an animated version of the comics, but I quickly accepted it and ended up loving it! I think it’s cool that it’s a different story because I have read the comics and the movie so it’s like getting more lore and I like how it was handled :)
I thought it was fantastic. I loved they explored Ro and we really got to know her more, She even got character growth which I loved. And that old Scott really didn’t learn his lesson and he was still a jerk. But his past self actually gets a chance to be a better person. Idk I just loved the themes and appreciated it.
To me it didn’t. I was open to the fact that Ramona was gonna be the protagonist of this anime series. And not only did they improve her so much compared to the movie, but they also let her have emotion in her feelings and how she acts and speaks which is cool. Too me, it just gave Ramona more character as well as some of the evil ex’s and some other side characters like Young Neil and Knives for example.
I was expecting more side stuff since it was a longer run time than a movie but no, they cut crash and the boys, and the clash at demonhead drummer. I felt the side characters barely had anything to do besides wallace being put into a more main character position. It was nice to have more time with the different exes though, and the concept of working through their issues instead of fighting was a different take, I can see how in this day that would be the narrative they want to showcase. Kind of a full circle. Having scott removed for so long was a weird choice for a show called scott pilgrim though, I can see how people would feel bamboozled.
"Betray" is a strong word here. Did it not live up to some people's expectations? 100%, no entire fandom is satisfied with a single project. Did it BETRAY the fans and spit in their faces? No.
“greatly misled” seems to be a more accurate description, the way it was advertised in trailers 100% DEFINITELY framed it as if it was going to be an adaptation
I personally don’t mind the end result, I just wish an adaptation is what we got (having both would’ve been even better) I was personally looking forward to experiencing the full story for myself for the first time since I’ve only ever seen the movie and (while knowing of events and gist of the story) have never picked up a SC comic so I was a little let down once I realized it was going in an entirely different direction lol
I don't mind a new twist on it but really feel that that should have been told to people because marketing very much made this look like a straight adaptation. Looking forward to seeing it because I like Scott Pilgrim and seeing more about the EXs and Ramona would be nice considering how the original story seems to indicate that Ramona herself had caused quite a bit of the issues with the EXs in the first place.
I honestly understand why they didn't because the sheer amount of backlash could have quite possibly gotten the show cancelled as netflix is pretty quick to cancel even the best of shows especially animated ones. And sadly a more ramona focused show with relatively little scott and more emotional and peaceful resolutions probably wouldn't have sat well with the large portions of the fandom that are incels who misunderstood the entire series.

I felt that comment your friend made. We core fans REALLY wanted a proper adaptation, but I personally still am thorn between that and appreciate this series. Like your friend, wish I hadn't read the comics first
I read some of the comics as a kid cos they had them in the library, it’s been a little while so I don’t remember them like vividly but I’m a hardcore fan of the movie, and I loved this adaptation, it was completely different from what I thought it was going to be and we got a lot more focus on other characters that have been glossed over in the other versions
I think if they had just marketed this as its own unique thing and didn’t try to trick people into thinking it was going to be a direct adaptation, people wouldn’t have been mad. But they really hid that this was going to be something wholly different and I can see why that would upset people
I get what you mean, but looking back on it, I feel like they did it intentionally to avoid the spoiler of Scott Pilgrim disappearing and Ramona trying to find him. I was actually pleasantly surprised to into blind and see that the plot was different (albeit after some state of shock of “…What just happen?” But perhaps they could’ve at least shown some new scenes to implant the idea that “Hey there’s going to be new stuff in this compared to the original” to give fans the idea that this is going to be a different adaptation.
I can see where people say this is a bait and switch though. If they called the series "Ramona Flowers Takes Off" that would have been fine. Also, Knives telling Scott "I'm glad you died" is just psychopath behavior. That's a horrible thing to tell someone you claimed to like. Holy hell, I'd be looking over my shoulder when that girl's around.
I enjoyed Takes Off, my major complaints were that it dragged a bit starting at the Todd episode, and that they should have brought Scott back in an episode or two sooner, as I didn't care about their relationship by that point cuz he was gone from the show so long that it wasn't the focus anymore. The story mix up was fun, just wasn't executed flawlessly
I remember watching the movie in theaters when i was in elementary school and hearing the original cast come back and voice the characters again truly was something really special to me.
If you knew the creator Bryan O Malley long enough or at least with his work... this is EXACTLY what he would do or allow. He wants his IP to be tightly contained and I respect it. A lot of creators that has franchises usually have it blow up so huge that it's nearly impossible for them to even control it anymore. For me to keep it in a tight grip like that is fine to me. If Scott Pilgrim doesn't get a season 2 you won't see me rioting over it. I'm just glad Scott Pilgrim got an animation adaption. Lol
I loved how it fleshed out the exes, and gave Ramona more to do than just be fought over. Also it proves my point that the worst thing about Scott Pilgrim is Scott Pilgrim.
Personally, as a scott pilgrim megafan, i absolutely enjoyed the direction the anime went. Do I think the advertising was misaimed and manipulative, yes, but I was very satisfied with what we got, even if a comic adaptation would have been amazing.
Scotts is empty cause HES NOT EVEN IN THE STORY MAJORITY OF THE WAY Ramona is borderline a SUE that never really REJECTS or REMORSES from her bad actions of the past, she "acknowledges them" but in no meaningful way and it shows in how really she's the exact same compare to comics Gideon and Lucas both broken and emasculated and it shows Wallace just a ass here who's not even Scott's friend at all, even the movie did better his trope of turning every guy also is a bad stereotype Knives is barely in the story and ENVY is just worse than before none of them have a benefit in this show
Speaking honestly... I had the exact same feeling as Sabersparks friend. Where the disappointment soured what is actually a pretty good show. You have to remember that a lot of fans form the comics have wanted an animated adaptation from the beginning. Like we accepted the Live Action film as being cool, but it's basically the "speed run" version of the story. It is running 200km an hour and gives no time to breath... it does it well, but again it's like a sliver of the actual story. So when the creator announced that they were making a Scott Pilgrim anime, you bet the fans who have been there since the beginning, they were pumped. An actual animated adaptation. Now Bryan Lee O'Malley did comment that the animated series was going to be it's "own thing" but you honestly never know what that means in this day and age. It could just mean that they are adapting it but it's going to still have things missing, or it's going to change some part of the story... but overall the impression given was that it was still going to be some form of an adaptation of the graphic novels. All the trailers and media also implied this as well, as we saw a lot of the first book adapted in that first episode. I went in blind, and I tell you, the end of the first episode was a huge punch to the gut, and the second episode didn't help. I had to stop watching at that point for the night. I was pretty off put, even if I loved the animation and music. I did finish the entire series, and even if I loved parts of it, my overall enjoyment was still soured by the misdirect and the disappointment. Maybe one day I'll be able to enjoy it more, but for now I'm fine with a one time watch. It also just stings that this means we will probably never ever see the books get fully adapted, and to me that will always be a shame, since there's so much that people are missing out on.
@@thecoolbroscoolman4672 I'd say it's a good show. I don't think it's a story that needed to be told, but it's entertaining to watch at least. Does bother me that they undo all of Scott's character development from the books. You know earning the "Power of Understanding" that he symbolically gained. As Takes Off basically says Scott stopped being understanding and talking things out with people and went back to his old selfish self absorbed ways. But such is the problem with all media today. Can't have any hero actually retain all their experience, gotta tear them down.
I think that last point is what people are upset about; it feels like the chance of a full scale adaptation of the original story is even lower than before.
I just don't understand the need for it. The books already exist, the movie already exists, why not have something new and fresh? I don't understand the need to have every story be told on every medium over and over again
It's worth noting, people aren't unhappy with adaptions these days. They're unhappy with BADLY DONE adaptions. I haven't seen this show and I am not a comic fan, so I can't comment on it, but in general people want good adaptions. GOOD adaptions. And that basically never happens now. People are terrified to see their beloved franchises up next for the grinder to ruin them next.
You say that like people have any consistent standard on what a good adaptation even is. We're somehow living in a timeline where the live action One Piece and Sonic adaptations are considered good, despite every change they made being for the worse and everything that stayed the same being downgraded, while things like Castlevania Nocturne are shat on despite improving every aspect of the original story.
@@Peasham Absolutely abysmal take. Nocturne is utter trash and a disgrace to the franchise, while OP live action made some improvements by cutting down some filler, changing certain locations (dark mansion instead of random cliffside), adding more Garp and the way they handled Buggy.

honestly the show is what got me into scott pilgrim and ive pretty much read/watched/played everything to do with scott pilgrim, i like how the anime explored the characters so much more. i dont understand how anyone could dislike it, its JUST as good as everything else in the scott pilgrim "universe". i love this series so much :3
read the graphic novels, saw the movie. Like the story, glad this was a remix and let the side characters have more spot light. They are good enough characters in an interesting world. Would love to see a proper sequel story,
I consider it more of an expansion. In which the characters already realized are put in situations outside of their control, where they "in character" adapt. So, in a way it remains continuitous with its source material.
As a long time fan of the comic, movie, and to a much lesser degree the game, it was fun. Comparing it to the comic was part of what made me love it. My fiance had never read the comic and only saw the movie, she loved it as well. I would still like to see the original story told this way, but this doing well could mean that.
I have read the comics and watched the movie. When the anime started I thought it was going to be a straight forward adaptation or a mixture of the movie and the comics. I'm happy I got this version. Too bad we didn't get to see the rest of the comics characters. I mean you can see them in the background if you look closely but it's not the same.
honestly as a huge sp fan I’m glad the anime wasn’t a rehash of what we’ve already gotten. I love when franchises have fresh new takes, it allows yourself to be more immersed in the world of the characters you love so much
The best way I can describe it is, in the original comic/movie/game, Scott gets his Happily Ever After. But in here, everyone get's their Happily Ever After.
I loved the show! It's probably the best way to do an adaptation; everyone's seen the main plot already, they know what happens, so they made a fresh perspective on this world and its characters. The Ex's were mostly treated as boss characters before, so it was nice seeing them fleshed out and treated like real people; I actually really like Roxie, her just chilling with Ramona and Kim after her fight was so much fun (she even hums "Whistle-Stop" from Disney's Robin Hood ('73) (NOT the Hampster Dance, the original slower version) as she leaves, which is cute to me).
It's not an adaptation though. It's like the farthest from adapting the original graphic novels. Also it sounds like you came strictly from the movie if you think the Ex's were mostly treated as boss characters, if you read the original books you'd know that the Ex's are all fleshed out in the books with back stories, and interact with Scott several times before they have their fight. Tons of stuff is completely lost as well for Scott and Ramona's character development as well.
its not even the best way every character is worse off and a worse character than their original selves and butchering Scott's entire roll in the story is even worse, this isn't just a Ramona show its a bastardizing of Scott because Bryan's own marriage fell apart so of course he looks down on Scott's life now its just a bad bait and switch that makes each character worse and ruins the happy end of the story and its not a fresh perspective, its NOT a new story, its the same story just told worse with no real stakes
@@the_maverickk yeah, the exes were already fleshed out in the comics... people who don't get it should reread them. You can clearly see their personalities from their lines, how they act. For example, Roxie is my favorite and I've always loved how she had those little details about her - being an artist, clearly having an inferiority complex... sure, there were jokes about her sexuality, but she wasn't just "the lesbian ex". Every character already felt like an actual person (ignoring the supernatural elements lol)
The marketing an ads made it seem like a remake however as a long time obsessive fan of scottpolgrim being a scottholic myself it felt like a show made for og fans. Like a game mode of "what if". Loved it
I was waiting for your commentary on this. To be honest, even though the animation is absolutely amazing, the show should be called "Ramona Flowers Takes Off". The show should've been promoted as a spin off, the universe of Scott Pilgrim re-imagined. They really made it seem as a direct adaptation of the comics when it wasn't the case. Felt like a bait ngl. As a spin off, is great! But it wasn't promoted as one, so most of the fans where like "oh yes, finally a direct animated adaptation of the comics, let's go!"...and then Scott literally disintegrated in the very first episode, lmao 😂. I still enjoyed it, but ngl I kinda wished we got an adaptation instead of a spin off.
I think the very fact that the show is called "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" should clue you in that it isn't just SPVTW again. The title actually means something. Scott takes off alright. He takes off for half the show. That's the point of the title. Media literacy is at an all-time low.
I had to watch this series after I saw this pop up in my feed, brother, I was scared for a sec. I loved the take this series took us on. Bryan at this point has written this IP 3x for each version. This being the most unique to me. The alternate take and use of the cast was sublime. Thanks for not proving me wrong after watching this fully. lol
To me the problem isnt the new content. Its that with some minor tweeks, the shows stories could have been B plots or extra content on the orriginal story, before or after some fights in the orriginal narrative. They could have had it were they didnt need them teleported back to their homes afterwards (the author says thats what happens when they puff into money). If someone intentionally markets a product as what you expect it to be and does a 180, its false marketing even if the end product had alot of passion behind it and would have had less of a schism if they just were upfront.
@@Peasham the original story instead of "killing off" scott. Most of the show , besides some plots could have been added to the orriginal story from the books as just a away to flesh out characters or show that in post of the fight that actually truly reflected.
As a big Scott Pilgrim fan, I will never be convinced that the bait and switch was a good idea. I rarely get excited for things these days and realising that all the things I was hoping to see from the comics wasn't going to be in the anime made me lose all enthusiasm and I stopped after episode 2. Had they been honest about the nature of the show, I would've been excited for that instead and I probably would've watched it all by now. Sure, I probably would've still been a little disappointed that we weren't getting a straight adaptation, but at least I would've known what I was getting into.
Glad that you did sky diving. I wanted to try it out but there's no "nevermind I'm going back up" *rewinds time to go back on the plane. Unless that's just what bungie jumping is lol. Also, I have never read any Scott Pilgrim's comics, but I saw the "live adaptation" of it. Michael Cera is funny in the socially awkward way. I love it. I will definitely watch the Netflix show.
Considering how meta and self aware Scott Pilgrim is, pulling the "this is a remake/retelling SURPRISE TIME TRAVEL MULTIVERSE SEQUEL" sounds a bit more on brand here than it did in, say, Final Fantasy VII Remake
As someone who's watched the movie, read the comics, and now watched the anime. I have throughly enjoyed it as it is a new perspective by people who are clearly fans of the series! I love yhe adaptation and really is done a lot better than most other... Adaptations these days xP

- Bait and switch storytelling cause they knew their ACTUAL story was never gonna sell itself on its own and rather than do the hard work to make it work in the long run, they took the easy way of using a (lets be real) dead brand as a corpse to masquerade in for their fem fantasy messaging
They did that with movie too
@@otherprisma7354 OK didn’t know that thank you for that but that wasn’t what I was referring to. the fact that, even if this is a separate story, from what I’ve heard, the majority of it is condensed into the one season so that way case if it doesn’t make a second season, there’s no cliffhangers
That’s awesome
So, old Scott and old Ramona in the anime are from the movie?
@@gilangpratama7959oh that makes a lot of sense actually
Then the comic creator got divorced and we get this shit
The idea of timelines in this sense really bothers me. I mean, different things happen in different stories. I think the fact that this anime tells a very different and contradictory story is a pretty good indicator that it's not the same 'timeline'. Why do we even need it spelled out and structured like that? Does it have to be that anal retentive?

Honestly for me, I just blame the marketing. They marketed it as it was going to be an adaption of the comic and it wasn’t. But honestly, once I got over the initial shock, I was able to enjoy it for what it was. However it did make me a little sad. I wanted to show this adaption to my friend who has never read the comic but I feel like he wouldn’t enjoy it. I feel like I only enjoyed it because I liked the characters due to the comics.
These are my exact feelings and thoughts, even the situation with the friend! The show is good, the problem was the expectations!
"O'malley said in the interview that the show is not going to follow the comics."
I love how every adaptation of Scott pilgrim is different it makes me appreciate the franchise more
O'Malley is an absolute genius.

I've never seen scott pilgrim and it was still great, I don't think you need to get context first.
@@godlyvex5543 me neither but I wanted to know the original story.
Yes, same deal here. Episode 4 is where they really get blunt with the fact that this is not how the original goes. Until then I was just scratching my head as to why Scott Pilgrim was barely in the show when he's supposedly the main character.
No need for a true adaptation lol

To be honest I have nothing against the show it’s pretty good
Like I don’t care that much that it wasn’t centered around Scott like it’s cool to see Ramona stand up to the horrible boyfriends she had
The show's animation reminds me of Panty and Stocking.
Same.

Tbh old Scott is basically nega scott
@@bella_ciao4608 Similar, but that Scott having to overcome his denial and facing how bad a person he actually used to be was a big part of what made the comic special.
FINALLY! Someone addresses the weird pacing issues! Reading/Watching other reviews made me wonder if I watched the same show as everyone else. I would have given up on the series if they hadn't hooked me by "killing" Scott in the first episode. I'm glad they pulled it together toward the end of the series.
What pacing issue you talking about specifically?
@@neoPeake I'm not a critic by any means so this is my layman's attempt to explain. It just felt off. Timing of jokes, dialogue, etc. everything just bordered on boring and I had to really focus to stay engaged. I could see what they were trying to do but the execution felt weird.
@@patientprogrammer yeah I guess different strokes for different folks but I was actually engaged the whole time. Which is kinda rare for me since I usually look at my phone when I watch a show.
The same thing didnt apply to the anime though.
real fans knew chris chan was hyped for this
I heard that there were some people who liked the anime's Japanese dub better than the English version--while the original version just brought back the main cast from the 2010 film adaptation, the Japanese version brought some pretty famous Japanese voice actors to dub the main characters.
Almost all of these actors are far bigger than any of those Japanese va

for me, Takes Off felt like a wish granted for the fans and THEN SOME.
I love all the people complaining that the series "went woke" despite its premise being a critique of a woman lmao
Young Neil was a friggin gift
@@Peasham I have no idea how you can actually complain about Scott Pilgrim being woke. The comic is literally about a guy that has to stop being an asshole to others (and particularily to women) and learn how his behaviour hurt many people around him. Plus so many gay characters in important roles of the story. Poeple are really just dumb nowadays.
@@Rainfall7 earlier read a guy complain that the series where attacking "them" unlike the comic and I'm still trying to understand who "them" was supposed to be. Only answer I can come up with is "toxic bastard"
Absolutely agree! its really cheeky with how it uses the source material and then explores it!!
I love the direction the show went in, and from what I've seen, most fans of the show do too. I love how much focus was on Ramona, the development she had, and how much it fleshed out her exes. Julie is also the best in this. Plus the humor, animation, and music are all incredible. What they did with this series was unexpected, yes, but it's a welcome surprise as far as I'm concerned.
Very much agreed
I love how it found a way to give us new Scott Pilgrim content in this day and age!
Brian said it himself if you prefer the story from the novels GO READ THOSE. That story isn’t going anywhere.

This was a good show, and honestly an alternate timeline story really fits the universe.
I get that it wasn't what some fans wanted but it was excellent and I wouldn't mind getting a continuation
In a world full of remakes that more often than not fall short of the original, this was an absolute treat! Every second was incredible.
You’re ignoring the point. They didn’t have to market it as they did.
You should read the comic
The marketing was purposeful to throw people off on the story line. And they did a great job cause I was taken by surprise
@@DarkEclipse23 This is not the Terminator franchise, they couldn't just put the plot twist on the trailers
"You know this character you used to love, well this show is all about them!"
**kills the character off in the first 10 minutes and switched to a new or different character, usually an extremely toxic and unlikable one**
You know...People wouldn't be as mad, hell they'd actually give it a chance if for once they were just fucking honest and didn't pull another bait and switch to push a shitty fanfic
This is trash, this is what talentless hacks who don't respect the source material do and unacceptable in every goddamn case.
Which sure sometimes can be good, but it's literally everywhere right now, and arguably when people aren't expecting it, or they are really hoping for something else, it does make people feel tricked, and sours the experience.
yup, another story butchering its characters to push ideology, no surprise if u see modern Bryan O' Malley pictures, drunk the cool aid and it shows

Ramona is borderline a SUE that never really REJECTS or REMORSE from her bad actions of the past, she "acknowledges them" but in no meaningful way and it shows in how really she's the exact same compare to comics
Gideon and Lucas both broken and emasculated and it shows
Wallace just a ass here who's not even Scott's friend at all, even the movie did better

@@marcusclark1339I can understand not liking the show, but don't be a whackjob. Wokeism didn't kill the show, you just can't stand things with gay characters.
Hell, Scott being the Villain makes alot of sense since its pretty easy to tell that he has traits and quality that most of the Evil Exes have.
never love when a IP uses your brand favoritism to make more money

I was reminded of Utena. Growing up with that franchise got me used to changing adaptations. The Manga was one thing, the anime was another, and the movie was different from the other two. With Scott Pilgrim and how different the books are vs the movie vs the video game, I wasn't mad or anything about an entirely different take for the series. If anything, I was excited to experience another SP for the first time not knowing where it was going to go. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
YOU GET IT! I love Utena so much, and instantly thought of the manga, anime and movie and it's beautiful forms of storytelling after finishing Scott Pilgrim Takes off.
Time to watch the video Chris Chan was waiting for.
I found it fun. If I wanted to see the og story it's on Netflix so I could anytime
It was able to expand on the cast and give them a lot of development on top of removing that gross child dating plotline at the exact same time.
@@PeashamI was talking about older remona and how she did settle down but the cartoon makes it show she never learned and ran away again.
Basically the whole og movie basically became a bad end
What do you mean? They didn't remove that plotline with Knives, it's still there and was further developed upon in this alternate setting .3.
@@ivanbluecool Yeah I know, she settled down and still she ran away. It might be contradictory, but it's honestly realistic. People regress all the time, especially when they haven't faced their own faults.
@@Peasham all that shows is remona never grew up making all that time pointless.
It's not realistic if she never learned a single lesson and it's quite funny people want to constantly make that excuse for a plot hole of her breaking it off with Scott and then running away from her problem she caused. Just shows Scott was the victim besides all the ex fighting with how remona keeps hurting everyone and makes her a sociopath
@@the_maverickkthat's just like, your opinion, man

As someone who wanted to like Scott Pilgrim, but couldn’t get past how much I just didn’t like Scott as a character, I loved this show! I loved how it explored the backgrounds and personalities of the evil Ex’s, and I loved getting to know ow Ramona more, and seeing her grow.
At first I was kind of disappointed it wasn’t an animated version of the comics, but I quickly accepted it and ended up loving it! I think it’s cool that it’s a different story because I have read the comics and the movie so it’s like getting more lore and I like how it was handled :)
I really wish they marketed the different direction their going with as to not mess with expectations. Expectations hurt both sides if not managed
I personally don’t mind the end result, I just wish an adaptation is what we got (having both would’ve been even better) I was personally looking forward to experiencing the full story for myself for the first time since I’ve only ever seen the movie and (while knowing of events and gist of the story) have never picked up a SC comic so I was a little let down once I realized it was going in an entirely different direction lol
tbh I didn't like how Christ Chan had the audacity to ping him on twitter but I do like Saber's thoughts on the anime.

@@marcusclark1339 imagine saying this seriously lmaooooo
Me too, this could’ve been the definitive version but what we have now is amazing
@@the_maverickk I mean I wouldn’t what the power of understanding is since I never read the books or watched the movie

@@the_maverickk Read the comics too, and much of what you say is also true.
its not even the best way
every character is worse off and a worse character than their original selves and butchering Scott's entire roll in the story is even worse, this isn't just a Ramona show its a bastardizing of Scott because Bryan's own marriage fell apart so of course he looks down on Scott's life now
its just a bad bait and switch that makes each character worse and ruins the happy end of the story
and its not a fresh perspective, its NOT a new story, its the same story just told worse with no real stakes
The downside is that they gave the spotlight to Ramona
The upside is that they gave the spotlight to Ramona
*THE SHOW WAS AWESOME.*
We *NEED* another season.
The marketing an ads made it seem like a remake however as a long time obsessive fan of scottpolgrim being a scottholic myself it felt like a show made for og fans. Like a game mode of "what if". Loved it
Just a reminder that Chris Chan mentioned this video
Chris chan watches your show
I was waiting for your commentary on this.
Thanks for not proving me wrong after watching this fully. lol
Think of it this way:
You expected a reboot and got a sequel!
The B plots to.. what?
Now the real question.
What does Chris-Chan think?
