    You come up with the best examples! I only saw those pumps in very old advertisement.

    Keith, I am experiencing the exact problem with my pump. It works, but it doesn't. I have found a bit of a small error on the original prints and it is still on the new prints. I am so glad you are making a video of this. I had asked your daughter, a while back, if she would ask you or post more about boiler feed pumps on her Steam clinic site.
    Thanks so much!

      Thank you Jed - ! Charlotte doesn't have much free time to attend to the Steam Clinic forum that's why I don't get much info from it. These small Stuart pumps are very erratic - not my favourites mechanically but they look nice. The problem I have found is that for the small amount of water that they actually pump into the boiler, they use a lot of steam - which uses more water ... catch 22. Also they do not like very hot steam at high pressure either.

      Keith Appleton , that is exactly what I am experiencing. Took me a solid week to build mine, and three weeks to find out the prints were wrong.

      Hi Keith, other then Injectors, and engine driven pumps is there another design you would recommend?

    • @keithappleton
      @keithappleton  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's about it I would think - I like injectors but I also like to watch the mechanical aspect of these pumps.

    Hi Keith. Maybe in a video you can explain why the water pumps don't use a rotating flywheel and eccentric valve system. I suspect one reason is that the shuttle value type is self starting? but then the question is why aren't all steam power systems more like the water pump sliding value type? Inquiring minds want to know !

    Is it possible you could do a video explaining or detailing Caprotti valve gear? Since you mentioned it several videos ago iv researched into it as much as I can but still goes way over my head yet is incredibly interesting. Love the videos, cheers!

      I really think that's a bit too specialist for the type of videos that I make - which are after all designed and produced to help beginners for beginners . . . why noy just type "Caprotti Valve Gear" into Google ??

    Thanks for sharing Keith, I just received my laser cut spanners today. They are even better than I had hoped for! Now, if you can refer me to where I can get a thin 4 or 5 inch, needle nose adjustable jaw wrench. Pass info along to your pals at Bahco: they can even have the patent rights :-)

    Hi Keith. I have a Wilesco D16 steam engine running a small generator powering a street lamp. I use distilled water in the boiler, is tap water a definite no no? Could I use filtered water from a filter jug. I use Wilesco steam oil in the steam line oil feeder, Is it ok to use 3in1 for all other moving parts i.e. eccentric's, bearings etc. Love your videos, their great. Many thanks, Dave M.

      I would say you are OK with what you are doing ..... Distilled water is better than tap water.

    What kind of band saw blade are you using on the video to cut the stainless steel spanners?

    • @keithappleton
      @keithappleton  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      a standard bandsaw blade, the secret is to keep the part being cut moving all the time so the Stainless Steel doesn't work harden.

    Hiya Keith. These pumps are alright as models.If you remember I built one and brought it up to yours to test and we ha problems getting it going. They leak like sieves and if you tighten the glands they dont run at all. You know I build a decent pump so there was nothing wrong with the engineering. Its probably why they are called Stuart Models.Not meant to be used in anger.
    Also ,I think the Stuart models are overpriced now. The Southworth pumps are a much better proposition , especially the Duplex. You should show the one that I built that sounds like a locomotive when it is running.

    I wonder why they left such a huge bridge between the wrenches? With laser cutting that could be as small as 1/32"

    • @keithappleton
      @keithappleton  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Possibly something to do with the heat distortion produced by the Laser. I am sure that the manufacturers did it for a good reason .....

    • @steamboatmodel
      @steamboatmodel 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do the wrenches have a sharp edge like what you get from milling?

    • @keithappleton
      @keithappleton  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      no, the Laser cutting is quite smooth .....

      I'd expect that another set of spanners, or maybe other tools, overlap / nest in the space between individual spanners - there seems to be more enough space including cutting allowance. That'd minimise wastage & produce ~ 2x as many sets per sheet of stock.
      I only wish I could find something similar here for a reasonable price - a set of nice thin spanners would come in very handy...
