The iPhone 15 Pro & iPhone 15 Pro Max come with an Action Button instead of the traditional mute switch. And while you can set it to perform basic tasks like open the camera, turn on the flashlight, etc...those are boring and don't really save you much time.
So in this video, we're going to guide you through setting up Shortcuts to use with the Action Button. These can be anything as simple as opening Notes or Reminders, or as complex as running different actions based on the device orientation and focus mode. Enjoy!

Currently it sets the light in my room to a lighting/colour I love having it on before I sleep.

I wish there was a way to remap the action button based on what focus is currently active. An example while driving it would be nice to be able to use shortcut but while at a doctors appointment it would be nice to have a go to the ring/silent, while at work voice recording, sleeping flashlight etc. Apple missed a huge opportunity. I’m sure we’ll get that with iOS 18.
I combined “Device Orientation” with the Action Button Menu.
Device Orientation portrait/faceUp = Action Button Menu.
LandscapeRight = take a picture
LandscapeLeft = to make a video
faceDown = focus on sleeping
Depending on the orientation, the Action Button does something different, brilliant.

Apple will definitely add more feature to the action button. This is just the basics and start. Single tap, double tab, triple tap, sustained tap.. etc
I sure hope so. Would make Shortcuts just that much more robust
I don’t know if you used to jailbreak, but that reminds me of the activator tweak.
If anything they are going to lock down useful features that people are doing with it and then add a few other options in a "major update"

I had a five finger pinch automation that brought up an image of john cena in the corner of the screen, complete with the theme music in the background. Oh, the bittersweet memories of those olden days 😂
I think the change to allowing all automations to run with out needing confirmation is truly the biggest game changer now allowing me to choose when focus modes turn on and off and making the button do something different depending on the focus in on is insane
If you put location info in to automation to turn on certain focus mode and use the focus triggered action button WOW. Imagine you enter your office action button works as a silent button, when you come home it works as a garage door opener, when you are at walmart action button opens the trunk unlimited option only limited by our imagination

This was so awesome!!! Thanks for creating the action button menu, I combined that with focus specific modes so that the menu comes up when my phone is in a focus but still retains the mute toggle when it isn't in a focus mode! It's nice to utilize the button and not just have it for a basic function

11:07 For the action menus, one way I figured was to “Get Battery Status” and set it to “if Battery is greater than 0” and the rest is the same instead of the “Get Current Focus” so you can always use the action button.
You could’ve just deleted the “get current focus” and “if…”
Also, a suggestion for you ChatGpt portion, you could add a dictate text portion and pass that as input so you can skip needing to tap the dictation button too

Needless to say, the power of the Action Button is actually the Power of Shortcuts. ...and shortcuts are very easy to call out using Siri.
That said, the Action Button is still a very good and comfortable addition and there are very good ideas in this video, including those that allow for different options from the use of the button.

I went ahead and combined the orientation based shortcut features with the Action Button Menu. All in one, and seems to work even with Orientation Lock turned on! Thank ya sir
For anyone interested, I just copied all of those orientation based steps before the action menu steps.
In my case, I’m only utilizing landscape mode (both right and left) to open the camera, and the menu opens if I hold Action Button in any other orientation. So after each “Open (camera) Photo” action in the shortcut, put a “Stop this shortcut” action. This way the menu doesn’t open up anyway when you’re trying to take a picture.
I set the Action Button to the Action Button Menu and added a few more things to the list such as an option to call my wife, toggle on'/off the flashlight and to set an alarm; I'm also trying to come up with more things to add to the list. Thanks for the shortcuts 👍🏽 you're awesome!

Firstly i thought the Action button is only specified to do certain task but after watching this video i am glad that the Action button can do multiple tasks and that makes me more addicted to 15Promax as I am using Xsmax and was thinking to buy 14Promax but now 15Promax is in my wish list

What I will do is, if it’s horizontal left video, horizontal right photo, when in portrait mode and no focus in use than the shortcut folder aka control center 2.0 and then of course for each focus mode separate action. Let’s see if this works.. thanks for the inspiration!
Since you have to hold down the action button to use your action, I feel like it would’ve been cool if just pressing the action button would turn on/off mute
Single press, double press, and long hold should all be three different programmable functions.

The thing I really want is shortcuts integration for action button mapping!
So that I can make the action button do different things based on location or time.
just set up a focus mode and set actions based on focus modes. Focus modes turn on automatically based on time and location

@@playerguy7Use the automation feature in shortcuts, it can run things automatically and without even having to press the button at certain times, idk about locations yet but i know for a fact times work

This video shows a lot of that process just not in depth. Might have to make a course or something since that video would be 2+ hours lol
First thing I did when I got the phone was setting it to short cut to lock/unlock my front door. I have location based automations, and wanted to do something similar for the action button. Change its functionality based on location.
As a certified action button pro, now I can record a conversation, take pictures, and prank someone with a sound effect
9:06 You can also instead create an album full of wallpapers you want to switch between, set a shortcut to find all photos where album is (your album name) and have the sort be random. Set the limit to 1 photo. This way it won't prompt which image and it will just be random. Then use the set wallpaper action and select the photo that was found as the variable.
True. I tried that and it takes too long to change. Definitely easier to set up though
11:39 Reminds me of the Activator tweak from jailbreaking. I had all kinds of double tap/triple tap/press and hold actions set up for buttons and had a menu of stuff pop up when I pressed volume and volume down together
Can you tie the focus mode shortcuts with the mega menu? It seems like only the "show menu" shows under the action button shortcut but not in the shortcut app
Device orientation is awesome, and I’m working on making the most out of it.
Face up I have it pull up a Google search, which I’ve actually gotten a lot of use out of.
Left side is camera
Right side is video but I think I want to switch it to something else. When I’m at my computer I usually have it lying on the right side in standby mode and I want to think of something I could use from standby.
Vertical I have it skip song (very specific use case for me at my job)
Downward I have it toggle silent mode for when it’s in my pocket
And face down starts a sleep timer to stop playing my music in 30 minutes

It would be cool if in the future, the action button worked similar to the back press. One press does an action, Holding does another, double press does another, etc. I know the list of actions shortcut is a temporary solution for this, but it would be nice for this to be a built in feature
The focus trigger will be a godsend. My public transfer app during freetine and a short cut that shows my EMEI during work since I have to trough security a lot there

For your CHatGPT shortcut you should use the dictate action instead and then turn it into text and then trigger the chatgpt action. That way you never have to type anything and it can be done only with your voice.

I think your video answers my question as to whether I can use the action button to toggle on/off noise cancellation mode on my BFPs. I’m just not quite sure how to properly structure the shortcut is all. I have it programmed to start playing my gym music playlist on shuffle as well as activating noise cancellation, but I want to be able to toggle off noise cancellation and switch it to transparency mode while also pausing the music app. Any pointers on how to properly structure this shortcut would be greatly appreciated.

I wish they would program the button to press multiple times for several different shortcuts.
That will probably just be a software update. Apple might activate the double tap and triple tap of the action button in IOS 18 or even a later version of 18.

You can move them around, to do this move it out of that folder then back in, when moving back in it goes to the first position

I think the action button should have a 3 click option - click once (this happens), click twice (this happens), click three times (this happens) instead of just assigning ONE function only. What I don't like is ok in in the movie theater want to silence my phone but the action button is set up for a shortcut toopen an app - now I have to go change the function for silence mode and change it back later. If you say, just silent it in control center I would reply just open the app by clicking on it
I agree it should be like that but you can create a shortcut to prompt all of the default actions.
You don't want a single click option, trust me. The ammount of accidental presses you'd get would drive you mad.

You can set a condition : if Device Orientation is facedown = Mute & set volume to 0.
Lmao had a good laugh when you set face down orientation action to lock screen when you can just press the power button. Switching that to mute would be nice
