47 lining up and Keith Piggott the trainer saddling Ayala who despite being 9 years old had little experience. Off the track during 62 due to leg trouble that resulted in pin firing, Ayala was a 66/1 outsider but won by 3/4 length. Like many before and after him, he could never repeat the feat. Actually i don’t think he ever won another race
I think Jonjo fell at Becher's second time around, if I identified the correct horse, but the normally excellent Peter O'Sullevan confused Jonjo with Team Spirit in the later stages. Team Spirit was the horse who caught Springbok in the last few strides and finished 4th. He won the race the following year.
Peter O'Sullevan kept calling Team Spirit "Jonjo". Team Spirit was never mentioned once during the commentary. Jonjo had refused (I think) about two-thirds way round.
just been looking at this and o sullevan is getting jonjo and team spirit mixed up , jonjo was ridden by the duke of alberqurqie and fell at fence 20 you can see the duke running all over the place, jonjos old colours may have been similar to team spirits and the duke may have bought the horse just before the 63 race, but this is one hell of a cock up by o sullevan even calling him as a placed finisher,
@@chatham43 how can o sullevan get mixed up Jonjo who's prominent early on and has a big white face marking also colours are different and the horses also different shocking mistake but he got away with it

@jack He fell at the first in '65.
@ yes he did
That was a heartbreaker for "Oaksey" but well done Lester Piggott's dad on training the winner.

Great recovery from Forty Secrets at the thirteenth.
Classic !
Text book jumping over Bechers, twice, by Out and About and Josh Gifford.
Awsome
Also the gap from the first horse to the last seems much greater in the older races.
.....its a much tighter handicap now than it was back in the day...
Why don't they say " as we switch to our country camera" anymore?
