SAILBOAT MAINTENANCE: Upgrading to silicone antifouling - Hempel Silic One #78

  • Ask any cruisers out there, antifouling is NOT a fun job and cleaning your hull every week while on anchor can be a real pain (a friend of ours actually ended up with a small crab in his ear while doing it).
One dirty secret of the boating industry is that traditional antifouling is also really bad for the environment. And while paint available to pleasure craft is getting less toxic due to regulations, it is also getting less efficient.
So after a whole bunch of research, Ryan decided that we were going to go a different route for our anti-fouling. He purchased cans of Hempel Silic - One, a silicone-based antifouling. While traditional antifouling uses biocides to kill anything that would attach to it, silicone antifouling creates a slick surface that prevents barnacles from attaching and growing on the hull.
We sanded the boat, and started by applying an epoxy barrier called “silic seal”, went on to apply a tie coat to create a bond between the seal and the silicone paint, and finished with two coats of black Silic One.

Thank you for the environmentally friendly antifouling. Most TH-camrs sailing around the world say, “We’re so eco-friendly,” but the truth is, they’re not. The fact that about 99% of them burn hundreds of liters of diesel a year and have toxic antifouling on their boats actually makes them bigger environmental pigs (sorry) than most people like me, who isn't a sailor and just sticks to the local lakes (or in exceptional cases goes to a European holiday region on the Mediterranean every 4-5 years by car or airplane). 🌻✌❤
Edit: If you really want to go eco-friendly, you should also consider in investing in a anchor chain made of stainless steel instead of the standard zinc-coated as zinc is also poisoning the maritime life. Cromox is a German brand that make high-grade stainless-steel anchor-chains. They are bit expensive but they are also stronger and more durable than standard chains. Greetings!

We have black silic-one on our bottom - it's been amazing. After a year with long patches of no movement she came out virtually pristine and needing nothing more than a rub down to get everything off.
Boatyard was a bit confused about it when they hauled her out, they worried it was a PTFE type coating as it seemed so slippery and got a bit huffy - but if you dry a bit it's perfectly grippy. Worth making sure any yards handling it are aware.

I heard good and bad stories about silicone base paint as well, but its like you said, thats the boating world. But since I'm on the hard doing a refit and my last project is paint the bottom, for which I have been doing lots of research, Im going to look in to this product. Ultimately, the best way to keep growth way from any boat bottom is to keep moving, or don't stay too long in one single spot. As for the pink swimming hair cap, pink is beautiful. Just like Polar Seal was before the yellow, and then black. Btw, there was no mentioned of how many cans of each product took to complete. Fair winds.

I put silic one on in 2019 and found it kept pretty clean apart from a light furring that came off easily. The only issue I found (on East Coast, UK) was that after a stationary Winter and the numerous lock downs where we couldn’t get to the boat, we found hard flat ‘calcium’ patches formed that would only come off with the fingernail or silicone spatula which is what we used in the end? All cleaned off easily when out of the water and pressure washed. Looking forward to seeing how you find it. Best of luck, Spencer

Sorry to say that here in the UK they say it does not work. I expect that if you stop at anchor too much the same will apply to you. But let's see. i have coppercoat & store the boat over every winter plus pull it out mid season for a jet wash so that is no better either. Just saves me applying antifoul paint every year.I wish you luck. may be better in warm water.

A couple of questions. How did you do the bottom of the keel? How often do you think you are going to need to dive the boat to clean it off? Next time you want to work on a boat bottom, let me know. Its a lot more fun on a trailer, grinding the rust off the keel, sealing, fairing, and painting...... oh yeah... such fun... ;-) Looks great.

Ya know what they need? Like a drive - through car wash, they need some submersible machine that you line your boat up, and either motor it through, or it gets winched through and the brushes do their work. It should have the necessary mechanisms to be able to scrub the contour of the hull and most of the keel. I’d think if all you had to do was to detail the rest. Of the keel, rudder and prop, that should be some quick work.

Well, 100$ and a new battery later, the bow thruster was doing juuuust fine 😄 our bow thruster is a little princess that just needs a brand new battery every year 😆 (only joking, we are clearly doing something wrong 🤪)

@@RyanSophieSailing Something in the circuit may be slowly draining the battery over time. My lawn tractor used to do that so I disconnected it over the off season and the battery lived a long life.

This is a great and helpful video. From fashion to the torn crotch brand in minutes. Love it. Have you considered ultrasound transducers to reinforce the silicone coating? Just wondering if you have an opinion on ultrasound.

I think Ryan said in the video that you can put direct over old antifoul but it looked like you took the hull back to epoxy first. Could you please clarify

Is there a video with a longer term review of this stuff on your channel? I'm very interested in real world results over a year or so (I know it's been less, but not far off, will settle for 9 months, ha ha).

Ryan normally does his research though I see no research showing the technical performance of this product. I would want solid technical data before applying any new product to my boat.

Sv Amour. You are right, I always do a ton of research and I did on this product as well. The major issue is there is very limited information and reviews on it. I like the idea and the principal.
After many many calls to different people who used it I figured I would dive in and test it out. If it fails, it fails and the world gets to know but if it works then hopefully others can follow

Bit of a complex question as we had to ship the stuff down to Curacao from Spain due to the motor boat Situation. I would say its about double the price, but IF it actually works over the next 5 years it will be way way better. Ryan

Tell That to Monsanto, The best anti foul iv used was some stuff i bought off the Navy in Fiji 14 years old took us a day to mix it up to paint , heavy as hell - Lasted 4 years & probably was ok for another year sure it was poison but not having to paint scrap sand 3 or 4 times i feel it was better for the world than what your doing , Oh and it was only 10$ US a gallon ... Fair winds .
