It's probably weird that Primal is the first of the Far Cry series I have played and I love it! even the slow parts gathering and grinding have their level of suspense like randomly getting attacked by snakes and packs of wolves. By far the best moment for me was taming a cave lion.......as a cat enthusiast I almost collapsed into my self with joy.
+Beenubs Morrowind is more of a "throw dice for a hit or miss over and over" experience, from last time I tried it. Couldn't stand that style of combat. Skyrim wasn't exactly stellar but it felt far better.
I really appreciate how honest you are with every one of your reviews, even the ones where you are given stuff to review. It seems you take the time to personally and objectively look at things.
It was very hard to find a review that was actually fair and doesn't immediately shit on it (especially when it comes to games by Ubisoft) One that lists pros and cons instead of being super high praised or just considered by the reviewer trash. Thanks LGR!!
+LastSider It took me 42 hours to complete the game, with all the achievements and collectibles. It is pretty much average as other far cry's game lengths are.
Reused animations, reused map, almost everything is the same. It's a good game but it could have been soooooo much better if they had put 2 years more in to this title. Shame
***** I really like the setting. But they could have done so much more with the whole stone age setting. Survival, hunting. The thing is Ubisoft is lazy, and does not deliver a game that is worth $60.
+Zer0dog they resued the same map, alot of the same assets, some animations, and had the balls to sell it for 60 dollars. they should have sold it for 15 like they did with blood dragon and every thing would have been fine. its not worth 60 dollars.
You really should be doing more of these reviews. You're a very talented guy that puts a lot of work in these videos and with guys like TB putting out much less content (for obvious and serious reasons sadly) i think many of us would appreciate it and would most likely bring new people to the channel.
The atmosphere is great. I like it more than FC3/4 Primal is different and it feels right. FC's core game design is a great fit for the prehistoric setting. If I had to complain about one thing, they should make a better combat mechanic. Something like Riddick/Condemned, maybe more refined, since it is a melee only game. I admit they got lazy there. I would also like some primal war screams or more voodoo dance quirky stuff around fire.... What can I say ? I only wish for a FC Primal 2 lol ! Beast mastering is so much fun. I know this is not a masterpiece, or a game that most people will like (given that no AK47's are included), but, there are people who actually enjoy the slower pace, the hunting and other stuff other people find tedious in other incarnations. This game had some truly amazing potential, the execution was fairly good, I'm enjoying it so far. I would recommend this game to gamers that like "walking simulator" games, but they want some action too. You can take in all the nature, wandering, hunting, and some times get into a good fight, up close and personal.
+Koby Ball OR you play as an Indian acclimating to western culture, so you cover the spiritual aspects and connection to the land common in a lot of recent Far Cry games, and you get to fuck up military fortresses and steal their technology. Fuck I hope they make this game.
I just got done with the game on Xbox One. Holy crap, what an awesome (and beautiful) game. I'm actually impressed at the lengths they went through to make Oros believable, and honestly, the lack of an overbearing, sometimes preachy story was rather an asset to me, as I found the story in to be a non-intrusive experience as opposed to feeling like it's getting in the way. Honestly, I could go with more caveman-themed games. I will say that I'm not sure I agree about EVERYTHING in the previous Farcry games having a pre-historic analog. Yeah, the owl is clearly a set of binoculars (though you can completely fuck people up with them, which is different), but I was impressed by the lack of explosions in the game. Even the fire bomb isn't a concussive weapon the way a grenade is, and there really isn't a rocket launcher or anything of the sort. You also never have a flight/gliding option present itself, save for the one dream sequence with the owl. Honestly, the game feels positively restrained compared not only to FC2-4, but compared to much of the first-person action genre. I could go for more caveman games, quite frankly.
Ah, yes... A Happy Harry reference is always splendid. Glad to see you're familiar with that man's work as well, Clint :D Also, great video. Keep them coming. This stuff has literally become my primary soulfood when I'm bummed.
I think I got FarCry 3 for free with my video card. Liked it, but haven't finished it. I, too, got a bit overwhelmed by all the stuff on the map. The impulse to do everything can also eventually lead to burnout...
Great review. But I am going to complain a bit..... I know they call them Saber-tooth Tigers in the game, but that is not their name. They are sabertooth cats. They are only related to tigers very distantly being a part of an entirely different subfamily in the Felidae than modern felines. I love the fact that they are in the game, but Smilodon was indigenous only to North and South America and not Europe. But they are Cats, not Tigers. Eusmilus was the type found in Eurasia and Africa and Nimravus were common in Europe, but they died out 22 Million years ago. They were much more Leopard like and are classed as something called false saber-toothed cats. I understand it's just a game, but I would love to see a game like this with area accurate species. There were some incredible animal species from the time period in Europe and Eurasia which could be in the game and make it just as interesting, if not more. Just look up Pleistoscene Megafauna. There are some crazy animals that went extinct. During the time the game takes place.
It's so hard for me to watch first person shooters played with a controller - there's something about the weird flowy movement that makes everything look wrong, somehow. Good thing Clint's smooth voice doesn't require video to make it good!
Only used a controller for half of it. The other half I played with mouse and keyboard, as you can see by the button prompts popping up. I play with both to test available control schemes and see if one or the other is broken.
+Lazy Game Reviews I suspected it was something like that - i saw you navigated the map by dragging it with your mouse. Either way, consider it a compliment - I don't need the actual video footage to enjoy one of your videos. ;)
+XoriniteWisp I play Skyrim on PC with a controller because I like to sit back and watch it on the big screen and with surround sound. But it's mostly melee combat and archery isn't as hard as gun combat (especially since most of the time I'm doing stealth archery on relatively slow or even still targets).
yeah, but if you want to play a pc game in your couch, its kinda tricky to balance keyboard and mouse on your legs. With a controller you can sit comfy. And in overwatch some guys r pretty good with controller vs the mouse cult
I was worried that the 10.000BC theme was too "thin" to offer the same kind of experience that the previous Far Cry games did - And it looks like my concerns were confirmed. Short and mostly missing story - lackluster characters (Vaas anyone?), and not enough content to fill the gap left by removing the game mechanics unique to the "modern" era ones. I'll admit that the idea of beast taming is pretty awesome - We need more of that.
Great review and range of clips - this will give anyone who has not yet purchased Far Cry Primal an insight into what to expect. I enjoyed the game, but felt it was quite short with few main missions. The story is thin, but it is refreshingly different. I certainly didn't miss automatic weapons or vehicles. I would recommend the game, but not at full price - wait for it to come down.
If this is true I'm so disappointed with this game. No co-op, no multiplayer, no map maker. Yet they charge full price, when they've taken out a huge amount of features from the other games. It really seems like a blood-dragon type expansion that they want to charge full price for.
Traversing the map at night alone is akin to a horror experience in this game. As are some of the big beast hunts as side missions where you do the whole setup and wait for the animal to come, sort of like siege battles.
I wish they would go back to the Far Cry 2 formula. Less handholding and the sense of being alone in a foreign country. Hell even Far Cry 3 made it feel like you were at Disney Land. They could leave out shitty endings though like they all have in common.
+Pholiage It definitely felt a lot more of a experience you are going through in far cry 2. It was more gritty and less like a mini vacation like far cry 3 was.
+J Hughes Far cry 4 was trying to replicate 3 and did it without the same soul. not sure what it was with FC3, but that was just awesome in that respect.
+Geir Eivind Mork Maybe it's because you played 3 first. I played 4 first, then 3, and while both games are great playing 3 really felt like a step backwards. And I'm not talking about the graphics of course, but more the storyline is way more linear in 3, the optional missions are way shorter or even ridiculous and should not count as a mission, the grinding in 3 was worse than 4 etc. Plus I loved the Shangri-la missions :)
I have never played Far Cry and I like the concept of this. Don't know any other games that let you play in 10,000BC like this, especially in first person. I like how you can tame the animals like that. Just wondering, are you going to do reviews of older games any time soon? I mean anything from 80s to early 2000s as you have mostly reviewed more modern games 2011 onwards in the past 2 months or so, with the exception of a couple of older games and I have always liked your reviews of older games, maybe because I don't play many modern games, mostly older ones.
Primal strikes me a bit as Assassin's Creed Black Flag. Sort of has an idea, like pirates in their case, but they need to fit in the AC stuff within that mold too. A tad similar, at least. Like how it seemingly needs to have something akin to grenades or vehicles. As well as the overall structure. Seems a lot more could've been done, especially in this age of survival games, to have Primal live more up to its name. Good review. :)
Impressive review! I actually kind of expected this to inspire feelings of ambivalence. While it's an interesting twist on the regular game, I think spin-offs tend to fall into that pit sometimes.
"I watched you watching and man, that was a weird thing you were doing with your left hand." I was scratching my junk with my left hand while staying for the credits. This scared me...
ehh, wait for the dlc to come where Ubisoft goes like "Eh, we need some a dinosaurs in our far cry primal, cause kids like that ark surival envolved and the Jurassic world movie" just to balls up the historical accuracy, which.... to be fair, with this game or franchise, i don't mind being balls up. i mean dinosaurs in far cry? why not at this point. it would be awesome as fuck.
That game does look beautiful! Right before I posted this comment I looked up the recommend specs and was surprised it said a GTX 780... dang. Seems really well optimized then. Maybe not like GTA V was what with that game saying it will run on a 9800 but still.. seems awesome!
So it's kind of like Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon in that it's more along the lines of an expandalone game but they accidentally marketed it as a full game and sold it at full price?
Is there some way to program objectives to scale to the player's experience? Like to make the game essentially beatable from "Level 1?" Personally, I don't mind needing certain things to progress most of the time, but for certain types of games, I can see how they would annoying.
I loved the gunplay aspect of fc3 and fc4 ... i dont really like modern shooters with ludicrous guns... but i also loved fcp... i loved spearing people
I was going to leave a Beastmaster comment before you actually flashed the movie poster so now I can only elaborate on the sentiment: That your character isn't modeled after a young Marc Singer is criminal.
The key feature seemed to be the unique premise, a surprise in a time of formulaic franchises. I appreciate it for that, but unfortunately I personally have never been interested in cavemen. Still, I'm curious to see if this becomes a trend with Far Cry, in which case the series might become one of the better ones we have.
The cost is definitely rough. It's missing a lot of content and features that were prevalent in previous games, but it's still the same price as one of them.
Finally - An (hopefully) honest opinion about the game - which just backs up my expectations: Lacking in many areas, copy & paste job from earlier titles, completely "meh" both in idea and how it's made. - Note these are my expectations of the title, not what the video says. You know, when Ubisoft makes so much effort on marketing to make it look "AMAZING 1,000 / 10 GOTY GOTY GOTY" - it must be either broken, boring as fuck OR in Primal's case just a gimmicky mess for a full price game. (Almost every TH-camr I've subscribed was given a copy to review.) I haven't bought a single title from Ubisoft after the Trials Evolution "Gold Edition" - where they didn't deliver a single fix for the stuttering problems it had / still has (physics were tied to framerate = 59 looked like 15fps + random slowdowns and speedups because of the not-exactly-60fps framerate). I wasn't going to buy the Trials Fusion, either - but my friend gave a copy to me and guess what? -- The same damn stuttering problem was still there two years later they promised to fix it for the earlier title! What a joke! Also, the stuttering was never fixed for Fusion, either. Whatever, Ubisoft is on my personal "WHATEVER YOU DO - DO NOT SUPPORT THIS DEVELOPER"-list. They've deserved to get on that list and I doubt they will ever leave that list until they get their shit together.
So from your previous videos, I gathered that you loved Dying Light. What do you think of qualities that game has over Far Cry 4/Primal? Why do you love that game despite both looking similar on surface?
You made good points in favor of this game. Most importantly riding cave bears and roleplaying as Dr. Bees. I may now have to put this on my wishlist despite the Ubisoft taint.
+John Sacino (HDJ) You should try 4 out. It's an upgrade to 3. If you like Jason, you won't enjoy Ajay as much. If you don't like Jason, you'll love Ajay
@LGR, +1, yours was the best review, not lazy at all! And the other guys also said it played like Far Cry 3/4 in a different setting. But this would be my first Far Cry actually :) It's on the Steam sale now, thought I'd get it. My only question is (from it being first person and console-first): does it play well with mouse+keyboard? I.e. I know it supports it, but some PC-also games just translate the controls and then it feels clunky. (Skyrim was a bit like that.)
Lazy Game Reviews Sold! Also thinking about Fallout 4... hate run-down/dark/drab/post apocalyptic graphics, they're so depressing and done to death. Do you still think I'd stay with it? I liked Rage for what it is despite that. I know you love it :)
Nothing I hated more in the previous games was trying to upgrade basic things like health or ammo capacity and the only way to do it was to find obscure plants or animals that only appear in the game once in a blink-you'll-miss-it spawn cycle. Fuck that shit.
redhotitchyworms Nope I have a mac and a pc laptop that is not that great. Which is why I will just go with xbox one that way I know the games will work right away.
I'm glad this wasn't a sponsered video, to be completely honest. It seemed Ubisoft shelled out waaay too much money to get every notable person on the internet they could find to try and shamelessly promote this game without actually discussing any of its flaws. It's refreshing to still be able to find reviewers who aren't afraid to call this game as average as it is.
I have yet to get into a Far Cry game. It may be that I haven't tried hard enough or maybe they aren't for me? I started Far Cry 4 and I felt it was okay and stopped playing it after maybe an hour? I will pick Primal up when it is cheap.
Hehe, i thought i would try this game only if it had awesome story - no story, no buy. And i love how you mentioned stereotyped characters, i thought they were already painfull in Far Cry 4, but again... why far cry, you suppose to be choosen one, after third, which was super epic.
What's _this_? A handsome cavemen picnic woefully underpopulated by bees? A large influx of _bees_ oughta put a stop to _that_!
OH, FUCKING LORD!
Is that a Harry Partridge reference?
It's probably weird that Primal is the first of the Far Cry series I have played and I love it! even the slow parts gathering and grinding have their level of suspense like randomly getting attacked by snakes and packs of wolves. It's like Skyrim with guns but no guns!
XD
+YoungTheFish skyrim had better combat init
+Devlin Butrrix AHHAHAHAHAHAHAH!
Nerd cubed
+Beenubs Morrowind is more of a "throw dice for a hit or miss over and over" experience, from last time I tried it. Couldn't stand that style of combat. Skyrim wasn't exactly stellar but it felt far better.
I really appreciate how honest you are with every one of your reviews, even the ones where you are given stuff to review. It seems you take the time to personally and objectively look at things.
Whats this? An over abundance of bees in an LGR review? My bag full of bees should put a stop to that!
You're the best reviewer ever, you're always on the point without being rude ;)
+Andrea Diaz you made me realize something
It was very hard to find a review that was actually fair and doesn't immediately shit on it (especially when it comes to games by Ubisoft) One that lists pros and cons instead of being super high praised or just considered by the reviewer trash. Thanks LGR!!
It's funny you said it feels like a Flintstones world. I actually found a Flintstones car at the bottom of a lake in Far Cry Primal xD
Mediocrity? In an Ubisoft game?
A large influx of bees should fix that!
... Oh, it didn't fix it? Well fuck.
In short, 60 bucks is too steep for this game.
+LastSider It took me 42 hours to complete the game, with all the achievements and collectibles. It is pretty much average as other far cry's game lengths are.
+LastSider *60 bucks is too steep for a game.
I got this game for Dave & Busters' tickets. About $30. For that much, worth it. Past it, eh, wait for a sale.
The situation got worse with the addition of yet more bees
Reused animations, reused map, almost everything is the same. It's a good game but it could have been soooooo much better if they had put 2 years more in to this title. Shame
Best comment for this game
+Maarten Smits COPY PASTA THE SERIES. My favorite Far Cry was Blood Dragon and they need to just make that into a full game....
+A. Coulthard blood Dragon is just 3 with a seizure filter better music and one liners
***** I really like the setting. But they could have done so much more with the whole stone age setting. Survival, hunting. The thing is Ubisoft is lazy, and does not deliver a game that is worth $60.

Love your reviews, man.
The atmosphere is great. I like it more than FC3/4
Primal is different and it feels right.
8:56 "I was watching you watching, and man, that was a weird thing you were doing with your left hand." *Takes left hand out of pants*
Hey LGR would you ever consider covering Outcast (1999)? It's somewhat of a forgotten classic and in great need of further contemporary coverage.
The next one should be set in a Wild West setting. That would be awesome.
+themaniacboy That's actually a good ass idea
Taking over indian camps.... nvm 3 racist 5 me
+Koby Ball OR you play as an Indian acclimating to western culture, so you cover the spiritual aspects and connection to the land common in a lot of recent Far Cry games, and you get to fuck up military fortresses and steal their technology.
Fuck I hope they make this game.
Red Dead Redemption did a great job at it, I'd play another game like that.
+themaniacboy Next one should be Far Cry Medieval where you take over castles and craft arrows and swords.
Great review, pretty much sums up any questions i had about the game.
Ah, yes... A Happy Harry reference is always splendid. Glad to see you're familiar with that man's work as well, Clint :D
Also, great video. Keep them coming. This stuff has literally become my primary soulfood when I'm bummed.

wait a minute... 8:30.. was that a Harry Partridge reference I heard?

I play farcry for the animals and exploration, so this was perfect for me.

I've always hated the drug trips in FC games. I can't be the only one who thinks they're outrageously tedious.

Oh boy, LGR saw what I did with my left hand...
now I know I'm going to wait until the price drops a bit before I get the game. good review, as always 👏🏻
Synchronized bee dance at the end there.
"You can attack cavemen with bags of bears!" (me misreading the video description)
Far cry 3 was. Awesome, but now I feel like they're trying too hard to replicate it while keeping it fresh.
+J Hughes Far cry 4 was trying to replicate 3 and did it without the same soul. not sure what it was with FC3, but that was just awesome in that respect.

I just bought a adapter 6.3 mm female to 3.5 mm male and Tandy 12 works perfectly. Now to find out the year it was made.
"I watched you watching and man, that was a weird thing you were doing with your left hand."
I was scratching my junk with my left hand while staying for the credits. This scared me...
you must have a beast of a gaming pc for it to look that good and smooth.
Adam Jenson as a caveman he definitely never asked for this !
i was wondering why the lack of dinosaurs, but then i realized 10,000 BC.

+TheHeroOfTomorrow I see your deadly bee weapon and raise you a magic gun.
Don't ask where I got it.
Also... is that a saber tooth tiger chewing your face? No problem, a large influx of Bee's should take care of that!
love the FC games and yeah i loved Primal (im a long time self built PC gamer)
So it's kind of like Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon in that it's more along the lines of an expandalone game but they accidentally marketed it as a full game and sold it at full price?
+Mr. Vulcanator Pretty much. I personally rate this as a 4/10. It just isn't that good.
+Captain Obvious 6/10
Guda? It is Gouda Cheese ;)
Is there some way to program objectives to scale to the player's experience? Like to make the game essentially beatable from "Level 1?" Personally, I don't mind needing certain things to progress most of the time, but for certain types of games, I can see how they would annoying.
I always use my left hand to pick food out of my teeth. I don't see how that was that weird, Clint.
I loved the gunplay aspect of fc3 and fc4 ... i dont really like modern shooters with ludicrous guns... but i also loved fcp... i loved spearing people
Damn did TouTube decrease the default bitrate for the videos? Every Far Cry Primal review I've seen is full of compression artifacts.
I will wait a year and get it on steam for cheap. It looks interesting.
Have you tried Superhot? I think that would be a pretty cool game for you to review.
"yaaaaaaaaayy, escort missions!"
I fucking miss the good old days of far cry 2...
I was going to leave a Beastmaster comment before you actually flashed the movie poster so now I can only elaborate on the sentiment: That your character isn't modeled after a young Marc Singer is criminal.
Love your reviews guy! Any thoughts on a SUPERHOT review?
The key feature seemed to be the unique premise, a surprise in a time of formulaic franchises. I appreciate it for that, but unfortunately I personally have never been interested in cavemen. Still, I'm curious to see if this becomes a trend with Far Cry, in which case the series might become one of the better ones we have.
The cost is definitely rough. It's missing a lot of content and features that were prevalent in previous games, but it's still the same price as one of them.
I can see this being a thing because of ARK.
(Almost every TH-camr I've subscribed was given a copy to review.)
I haven't bought a single title from Ubisoft after the Trials Evolution "Gold Edition" - where they didn't deliver a single fix for the stuttering problems it had / still has (physics were tied to framerate = 59 looked like 15fps + random slowdowns and speedups because of the not-exactly-60fps framerate).
I do with the left hand and write with the right one
Why you didn't review Far Cry 4? Will you do it?
So from your previous videos, I gathered that you loved Dying Light. What do you think of qualities that game has over Far Cry 4/Primal? Why do you love that game despite both looking similar on surface?
You made good points in favor of this game. Most importantly riding cave bears and roleplaying as Dr. Bees. I may now have to put this on my wishlist despite the Ubisoft taint.
I dont trust anybody just you with reviews :D and I love your voice
I skipped over Farcry 4 because I played 3 so much but, I don't mind mini missions so this looks awesome.
I'd say it works _best_ with a mouse and keyboard, actually. The interface works nicely and so does the combat and movement.
Lazy Game Reviews Sold! Also thinking about Fallout 4... hate run-down/dark/drab/post apocalyptic graphics, they're so depressing and done to death. Do you still think I'd stay with it? I liked Rage for what it is despite that. I know you love it :)
You leave my left hand outta this!
Nothing I hated more in the previous games was trying to upgrade basic things like health or ammo capacity and the only way to do it was to find obscure plants or animals that only appear in the game once in a blink-you'll-miss-it spawn cycle. Fuck that shit.
Will you review Darklands? It's an old game, but I never saw anything like it and I would love to hear your opinion of that game
+Dexiteo Nothing else like it, eh? store.steampowered.com/app/335120/ :P Enjoy.
I'm glad they at the very least unlocked the framerate in cutscenes, I just wish it wasn't so samey.
Love the Dr Bees reference :)
I was scratching my eye with my left hand.
You were watching me watching?'and doing what?!
I love this game.i love throwing bees on bum dudes and watching them do the hammer dance
6:05 Oh Phreakindee, didn't you know Central Europe was situated in Asia 12000 years ago ?
It's common knowledge.
(Yes, this is a joke, please don't lecture me about Prehistory.)
(It's not even in the Bible anyway, Earth is 6000 years old, everyone knows that.)
This was an excellent review. I enjoyed every minute of it.
+Lazy Game Reviews, you think holding a aolong is weird?
Looks pretty good might check it out when I get a xbox one cause sadly I am still on last gen...
pc ( if you have the specs )
redhotitchyworms Nope I have a mac and a pc laptop that is not that great. Which is why I will just go with xbox one that way I know the games will work right away.
How did he know I was doing that weird thing with my left hand!!
I will pick Primal up when it is cheap.
try blood dragon ( far cry blood dragon ). it is an awesome game that is also funny and does not out stay its welcome. It's also fairly cheap.
Great advice. Blood Dragon looks awesome! :)
Is this ega or vga graphics?
Pscht, it's CGA obviously.
Nice. I really like the chosen color palettes :)
Überdimensionaler Endboss
Hehe, i thought i would try this game only if it had awesome story - no story, no buy. And i love how you mentioned stereotyped characters, i thought they were already painfull in Far Cry 4, but again... why far cry, you suppose to be choosen one, after third, which was super epic.
Could you review the sims free play again because it's changed a lot since four years ago when you last did it
I wonder why you've never done the Blood Dragon review or let's play.
