I know this is a very old review, but I was always on the fence with this game, whether I would buy it or not. I always loved the Far Cry series and 4/5 are amazing. But, after watching this review, I went straight and got it. Thanks my man, I appreciate all the info :D
4 is the blandness game of the entire series. The only thing going for it is that its a polished well looking game that runs smoothly. Its story is sooo fckin dumb i like paigen tho js like vass hes a badass killer
Fun fact, its not entirely made up languages. They hired scholars that primarily study ancient linguistics and recreated a potential language based on common root words of the region from existing cultures. There was a behind the scenes interview about it. It was really cool. The system was based on 100 known words from Sumerians. They then worked with and coached the voice actors on the perceived pronunciation of said words.
***** You know, I've spent all this time saving my friends and avenging my brother, but I really wanna hit that tribal booty, so yeah, I think I'm gonna kill them all.
***** It still doesn't beat my favorite moral decision in a game, though: Hey, remember Megaton, that charming town with peaceful people and kids, the first place where people didn't try to murder you on sight? Could you blow it all up? It ruins the view from my balcony.
At-least Ubisoft are now changing things up even if its little. And they really should change the stealth system, make it more like Dishonored, stealth is the number one way I play this series.
I enjoyed pretty much all Far Cry games. Yes, they got kinda repetitive but Primal changed quite a lot of things or at least gave some stuff a new look. I really enjoyed the shit out of it this year. Was definitely in my top games this year and I cant think of too many... The collectors edition was even better, having access to everything and getting translation books, etc. Really cool enjoying the game like that. However, I guess some people get kind of tired of this Far Cry or Ubisoft formula. I dont mind it too much but its definitely noticeable that all FC games have similarities, especially 3, 4, Blood Dragon and even Primal but oh well. I still would say that Far Cry 2 is my favorite. Yeah, shitstorm me. I dunno but FC2 had such a special african feeling to it. Yes the driving and checkpoint thing sometimes ruins the game but beside of that its really cool and on higher difficulties like a surivial simulator. I sometimes missed some more civilians and wildlife though. Primal had too much wildlife. Really. Unrealistic much.
I've been saying since it came out that it is underrated as fuck. It looks and plays beautifully, there's tonnes to do and it's set in the fucking stone age. Wish more people appreciated it; though I agree there can be too much wildlife sometimes.
I completely agree with you about FC2 as well, my second fav after Primal. It had a lot of flaws yeah, but the setting and core mechanics were awesome. I think Far Cry games are probably best left alone by people who don't love the formula. Guess we do!
I agree that this is a ubisoft genre type of game, but at least in primal it makes sense. Trailing missions is basically now animal tracking. Taking over bases actually gives you more resources because you have more villagers. The eagle vision/hunger vision also makes sense because "shaman magic'. And car missions are now done with mammoths.
This was the first Far Cry I ever completed, so I honestly enjoyed it for what it was. That and there's not nearly enough caveman sims, so I'll take what I can get in that regard.
Far Cry Dev A: "you know what everyone hates and always complains about in our games? " Dev B:"Oh you mean the pathetic halfassed crafting systems near fetishistic climbing precipices, towers, and other bullshit to reveal parts of the map,the fact that ALL of our games are one huge bland homogenized grey mess and,the gods awful canned melee which is is years behind games like dark Messiah of might and magic? Even though that game was released over a decade ago?" Dev A: "Yeah, how about we make an entire game based COMPLETELY on all of that and ABSOLUTELY nothing else? we don't even have to really write a good story with believable or naturally flowing voice acting & lines anymore! We'll set it in the stone age and make up a language!" Ubisoft shareholders: "You mean we can release a game with the absolute bare minimum of actual work AND we can charge a full retail $60.00 USD ?!, SHIP IT! These these modern console gamer idiots and newer PC gamers who don't know any better will praise us for being revolutionary! We won't have to do really anything ! We're literally selling crap and to the lowest common denominator and they'll love us for it we don't even have to create anything for new assets and animations!" And thus the wool , or in this case saber tooth tiger pelt was pulled over the collective eyes of the gaming masses....and the gaming public PAID for it.
"Ubisoft is it's own genre." Well put. Is it true that the map is identical to the one from Far Cry 4? As in, the topography hasn't changed for 12 thousand years?
That is where you are wrong and right where the area is the same as they are most likely in the same location but some errosion has occured yes its small but remember some parts of the earth through out time will depending on what is affecting it such as humans, so its not really lazy design, saying its lazy design is sort of like saying that you play a game that takes place in the bronze age then the sequel that is in the middle age with gunpowder and you are in the same area just with massive differences, remember this is the ice age compare to far cry 4 which I guess somewhere around 2010 I can merely guess as it seems disconnected
Bought this for 22 quid. Loving it so far. My favourite feature is the ability to slide down a cliff without taking damage. You can even stop mid-slide!
First Ubi game that has somewhat interested me in years. Too bad it's only the art style and setting that looks interesting. Need interesting game play to go along with that.
Awesome review man. To truly complete the series though, would you be able to review Far Cry Instincts and Instincts Predator? I'm not sure if many ppl remember those ones!
ThreeDaysOfDan Far cry 2,3,4,blood dragon, spliter cell series, entire ac series, beyond good and evil, Rainbow six series, Watch dogs 1(good game after the hype died down), watch dogs 2, For honor (the mechanics, grsphics etc are good, the problem is p2p), Ghost recon series, trials fusion, Driver san fransico, South park are all amazing do i need to go on?
This game looks so repetitive, familair and boring and the amount of upgrades makes it feel like padding to the extreme. I'm sure You could waste alot of time in it, all Ubisoft games are like that but I want some new experiences not just glorified re-skins. Thanks for your review
I rented Primal and Platinum the game and I had to say I did had allot of fun, killed what could have been a boring weekend. Can't say how I would of feel if I actually bought the game though. Anyway, you know what I think would be a unique setting for the next Far Cry game or any open-world game? The desert lands of Manchuria of China, around the 1930s. If you saw the movie THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE WEIRD you know what I'm talking about.
This is a very, very good game, but terribly short, i was able to get all collect ibles, side quests, achievements etc on hardcore game mode in 40 hours. Now i have nothing left to do.
I like how Far cry primal looks but the few things I do not like is that you can not change the looks of your weapons whenever you want (the club level 2's look is shite) and the fast transitions between day, dusk, night and dawn, but I know why that is done is that during the night special plants come out however its still strange, also the absent of rain also the taming of animals makes it helpful for getting around, plus you are able to pet them, best feature
I'm one of those idiots who NEVER fast travels (because why create an open world if you just are going to skip around in it?) but this game broke me. After about 30-40 hours I just started using it ad nauseum to complete the game and move on. The other Far Crys are fine after that many hours because I enjoying driving around in a car but riding a tiger isn't anywhere near as fun.
I loved this game because of its rather faithful recreation of the stone age as a whole, granted some things here and their aren't perfect with the representation, but considering its far cry, which usually meshes a bunch of ecosystems together anyway, this is still pretty damn faithful, the people who worked on this did their research. But keep in mind i'm not a paleontologist, archaeologist, or anthropologist, i just know a lot of facts and just happen to be a huge prehistoric geek, take that for what you will
Ubisoft is it's own genre is the definitive statement of the year. I mean The Crew, The Division, Rainbow Six Siege and Assassin's Creed Unity are all basically the same fucking game with tweaked core mechanics. It's all just, "forming a team and go find shit."
Made up language for immersion, but modern HUD elements and menu map rather than using FC2s ingame map idea. Would've of been the perfect FC game to return the FC2 style map. Ubi logic.
it's such a shame though, it's a wonderful genre and beautiful setting i want it to be good but typical ubisoft... we someone like CDPR or Arkane studios to make a proper primal game on the side note: how many hours did you took you to finish the main story+some side quests?
Totalbiscuit did a performance report, and a day one update and apparently the game runs like crap on his beast rig and laptop. So "smooth" doesn't make much sense...
While there is another game where you can ride around on a sabre-toothed cat and use a slingshot (Ark Survival Evolved), it's way too much of a bother to level up once every hour of real play time to have a chance of doing so, only to go through a tedious taming process. Added, it's still an unfinished survival game. This game looks quite a lot more fun. As always, I really love your reviews. May I ask what your impressions are on the new DOOM coming out?
+Robb_Stark In my opinion, I say wait for a sale. It's a fun game, but it doesn't improve much when it comes to Far Cry's old gameplay issues. Also while the setting is different and does give an excuse of a lack of certain gameplay features that the last Far Cry games had, it doesn't replace them with anything new or different.
+Ertan Soner yeah thx for that I got FC3 on pc played a little here in NZ its intensely good AC4 aswell as oblivion I skipped lots of games so far recently picked up infamous second son not bad first light is a little better story wise though
"At this point Ubisoft is pretty much its own genre." Couldn't have said it better myself. And after giving such stock and personal loyalty to the Assassin's Creed brand only to be beaten and broken after 8 years of small, iterative "improvements," it's an easy choice to disregard this game. I applaud them for trying something drastically different but I've known right from the beginning how this would play out.
'Ubisoft is it's own genre'
This is the best thing I've heard ever.
+Major Fret because it's true, every one of their games burrows elements from another
So nobody could say "It's like Skyrim with Guns".
+Demonhorse1 It's Fallout 4 with meelee.
It's skyrim without dragons or being a good game.
+Demonhorse1 *_"ITS LIKE SKYRIM WITH STONES!"_*
+ultraboy222 Skyrim is not slightly dumbed down Oblivion, it's heavily dumbed down.
+Demonhorse1 More like *It's like Skyrim with guns, with no guns*

Dominic Francis late reply but you right
Sasha gray had a voice acting part in saints row 3.

Only if they had this much dedication for the gameplay itself.
This looks by far like the best FarCry 3 mod out there.
What do you mean "$60"...?
lol so true. The Himalayan Far Cry 3 mod looked good though
The Avid Gamer Haha thanks
the reason it cost money is because you can pet the animals, of course the badger is a piece of shite
I know lol "Oh Ubisoft" cheers Jim. . . I bought conan exiles instead, I'm not paying £41 for a three year old game.
This is nothing like far cry3
I'm still waiting for Far Cry: Blood Dragon 2.

+Jovan Mitrić
sadly, it might never happen.
pepper Mill That's what saddens me the most.
***** Well, the last year's poll showed that fans would like dinosaur island setting for the next game. What happened with that? I'd play it.
Jovan Mitrić I'd have a WW2 "saving Private Ryan"-like campaign with dinosaurs and giant earthworms.
Real question though: does it have boobs
+RealLamandSam Yeah but they hang straight down like a hardball in a sweatsock.
+RealLamandSam Haven't played it yet but I know you can recruit a side character that has a boob that constantly slips away from the bra
+RealLamandSam Yes.
+RealLamandSam yes but big ones as of yet
+RealLamandSam and snatch and hairy caveman dongs.
At least there isn't a heavily advertised eccentric main villain in this one or is that being saved for Far Cry 5.
+civilwarfare101 A villain that will appear for 10 minutes and die in a QTE or just fly away into the sunset? Can't wait!
Max Payne

This game is Far Cry 3: Prehistory, it came after Far Cry 3: Himalayas

4:33 Cheeseburger’s ancient ancestor
I know it's supposed to be in the pre-historic era, but aesthetically it looks really similar to The Revenant movie, which is definitely a good thing.

If its repetitive why bother playing a Far Cry game. I don't understand people wanting massive changes to the formula. Hell, its a game not a movie.
i love how he said it "50 spear to the Face" he said it in awesome accent xD Great Review :D

+tereka winnegan I still enjoyed it a lot.
Hmmm can't make my mind up if I want to try this or not, I've never played Far Cry would this be a good place to start? On PC.
I am actually having more fun with this far cry than I did with 4
I know this is a random question but do you think you can review Ghost in the Shell on PS1? Btw awesome review as always
So what is your favorite far cry game out of the series

Hey Gggman. I have a steam key for dead effect 2. Since my PC can't run it, would you like to have it? Possible review for it?
best game in Far cry series even in 2023 in my opinion
I loved this game because of its rather faithful recreation of the stone age as a whole, granted some things here and their aren't perfect with the representation, but considering its far cry, which usually meshes a bunch of ecosystems together anyway, this is still pretty damn faithful, the people who worked on this did their research.

Ubi logic.
You can turn all that off if you want.
This reminds me of a better looking, yet paper thin version of skyrim. Are you gonna do a skyrim review? Did you like skyrim?
Could you make review of S.T.A.L.K.E.R Shadow of Chernobyl standalone mod called Lost alpha please? :)
did you work in eb games in perth?
Did nobody think they should save the 'cave man' concept for Blood Dragon 2? It sounds like it could have been a bundle of laughs.
it's such a shame though, it's a wonderful genre and beautiful setting
i want it to be good but typical ubisoft... we someone like CDPR or Arkane studios to make a proper primal game
on the side note: how many hours did you took you to finish the main story+some side quests?
Out of curiosity, is the fast travel system still in the game and ,if so, how redundant does it make the animal riding?
+MiniTableTurner You need to capture bonfires before fast travel is active so it shortens this somewhat by riding to and from each area.
HAHA! "By this point, Ubisoft is almost its own genre" that's so true, well-stated! I'm gonna remember that one.
Is it true that Ubisoft just recycled tha map of FC4 for this game?
My GPU is so going to cry with this game
Then it will be...a far cry.
This game looks super fun but I want to play some other Far Cry games first. Great review!

This is the best game in the series.
Didn't they actually copy/paste the entire map from the last game for this?
Really on the fence on this one, is it worth full price or am I better off waiting for a sale.
+Robb_Stark In my opinion, I say wait for a sale. It's a fun game, but it doesn't improve much when it comes to Far Cry's old gameplay issues. Also while the setting is different and does give an excuse of a lack of certain gameplay features that the last Far Cry games had, it doesn't replace them with anything new or different.

now only if we could mod it and have some fucking guns in it.
they should have added a gun easter egg. like throw in a ak47 that looks like it was made from stones and leaves and that would have been funny
