But 35 years later it truly has transcended. This is a song I don’t hear, I have to listen to it

I love this song, it will always be one of my faves from the 80’s. Mr Mister was a great band and Richard Page is a great singer. Long live great music. 🎵🎶
If there was a time I could go back to and freeze it forever it would be when I first heard Broken Wings on the radio. That song has so much atmospheric qualities starting with that famous bass and synth lines coming in together. The production is so amazing, it still sounds fresh all these years later. And kudos to Richard Page's voice. The guy has some serious pipes.
Broken Wings was the first song I heard after my ex-wife asked me for a divorce. I was totally blindsided by this,as it seemed to me like we had an excellent relationship. The words and feel of the song gave me great comfort as I healed. I still get choked up when I hear the song, even after 30+ years.
Broken Wings is my favorite song of all time - it's magical the way the keys & guitar echo the melody, the way the synths sound like a heavenly choir, the way the drum processing is a perfect mix of analog & digital, the great bass line, of course, - all cherry-topped with Richard's Golden & Emotive Vocal. I was already a huge fan of Pages, and when I found out they had regrouped as Mister Mister, I nearly lost it with excitement that they had finally gotten the recognition they deserved/were put on the map! I had the great fortune of seeing Mister Mister in concert three times; two times at The Palace in Hollywood ('86/'87) right at the stage! - and one time at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles ('87). At The Palace, in between songs, I held my hand out to Richard to shake it, but he declined at first. I tried a couple more times and he finally reciprocated. He held on longer than I expected just looking down at me. Then, when the lights went out, I started to take my hand away but he gripped it tighter - to my utter surprise! When the lights came back up, he started to take his hand away and I gripped HIS tighter! (lol) Later on, after the show, I waited for them outside the building & got their autographs (except for Ferris - he was AWOL). I was so happy to be able to tell my musical heros in person how much I loved their music from Pages ("Two People" being the star), as well as Broken Wings & all the new stuff. Richard and Steve George were very reserved, quiet & humble,... Pat was surprisingly friendly, outgoing, and engaging. The second time I saw them at The Palace, I snuck a camera in and took pictures of them performing. I also got autographs while they were on stage. We sang our hearts out along with them, shifting between melody & harmony to the songs from "Go On", when, between songs, Richard said, "you sound great - take you on tour with us" - no joke! To this day, those two concerts/experiences remain among the biggest highlights of my life. Fast forward 18 years, I was able to contact Pat Mastelotto through his website and finally got to share those pictures with him! Pat's drum playing on Al Jarreau's "Let's Pretend" inspired me to want to learn the drums, & of course, Rich & "Slug" had their part in that tune as well singing backups and helping to write it. All four of them, Rich, Steve George, Steve Farris, and Pat Mastelotto are incredibly underrated & talented musicians, and deserved a lot more recognition than they got back then! Thank you so much for posting this interview! I didn't know about the background behind the song.
@@LarryFleetwood8675 yep... Rich (& maybe Steve, too) did backups for The Village People, Donna Summer, Barry Manillow, Kenny Loggins - so so many people ...

Richard kept that silky smooth voice for so many years. His voice will always be one of my favorites. Broken Wings, Kyrie and Is This Love are all still in my rotation ❤️
This is my number 1 song of the Eighties, and possibly even of all time. I never tire of listening to it. Steve George's magical haunting synthesized bridge in the middle had me first hooked since its release in '85. The careful use of the drum effects, the well made base, and Richard's awesome voice ( and let's face it, no one out there could have sung this song like he as ), make this song very special indeed.
Broken Wings is one of my all time favourite songs. It’s just timeless. My children listened to it countless times growing up and know all the words too now. It’s definitely a masterpiece.
This song is my soundtrack to my teenage years during the 80s, and one of my most fav tracks from that decade. Still love it to this day, and often gets played alongside Toto’s Africa, Don Henley’s Boy of Summer, to name a few. Thanks for the video!

This song was a huge hit in Brazil in '86. I was a kid listening everyday in the radio, sometimes at home others with my dad in his car. This songs represents all the good vibes about the 80's and still remains strong to me at this day. It's a privilege listen to a perfect song liket this!! One of my faves of all time!! Thank you MR. MISTER!
Wow, so it was Richard Page. Broken Wings is one of a handful of 80's tracks/songs that to me epitomize that decade, and I love that decade of music. I worked in a job in those days for city government that had me work outside a lot (in the CA High Desert) and drive around, always with the radio on, and this song was so haunting and powerful and atmospheric and fitting for the locale, and it always spoke to me. The guy's got an excellent vocal quality and phrasing -- a natural talent. I'll be looking for work by Richard Page. Still love 80's music, and I'm 71.
This song was huge and in heavy rotation in January of 86 I think it was. One of my favorite songs, love the haunting bass and synth intro. Great job professor!

Those three Pages albums that he did are all amazing albums - just some of the best Westcoast jazz-pop anything ever put to record. He and Steve George were also the main backing vocalists on Andy Gibb's I Just Want To Be Your Everything, which of course was a massive song in and of itself. Great interview, so nice to see the legend in good health.
Richard Page had done A LOT of background vocals on albums. That amazing voice of his truly stands out. You all might not be a CHER fan, but he did vocals on her song, ONE SMALL STEP. Very good. He really adds to the song. Just one song of many that he contributed his great vocals to.
Broken Wings changed me. This timeless masterpiece of the ages still haunts me to this day. Every time it plays I'm hearing it for the first time. My favorite song of all time 💖
Always loved "Is it love". Was kinda overlooked. It sounds so much like 80's! "Broken Wings" ist just amazing. There are a lot of dark songs in the 80's.
This song, one of great ones that kept me going in High School, was one that I liked to identify with a specific group of friends who helped me back up during a time period of utter devastation. They helped me recover from being mired in anger after my parents split, and the song just helped me heal. Absolutely wonderful stuff.
As a 90's kid, I only started listening to Mr. Mister a couple years ago but Richard Page's vocals quickly ascended to #1 in my books. He's a man of incredible talent with countless great songs (my favorite being The Border). I only wish others my age could appreciate the musicians, like Richard Page, that the 80's brought into the spot light. Fantastic interview!
Amazing song. It had that sound that only seemed to occur in the 80's. Kind of haunting I guess? I've never been able to describe "the sound" that I'm thinking of, maybe somebody else can? I'm thinking this song, and songs like Total Eclipse of the Heart, Silent Running, Boys of Summer etc.. There was something kind of ominous in the background. I've always felt it had to do with the Cold War times we lived in.
The advent of digital recording technology is what made it all possible. The producers of the day were brilliant and incredibly innovative. I think the magic of the early 80s music was in their use of synthesizers, electric guitar effects and electronic percussion. They were masters of the emerging digital format and various hardware, which I first heard in some of the incredible R/B and Disco records. I suppose it began with the invention of the Synclavier, ala Stevie Wonder. Those synthesized, electronic sounds were brand new to our ears, and facilitated a revolution in music orchestration. Suddenly an artist could produce any waveform imaginable. Prince was a pioneer of this stuff, including his groundbreaking use of the new Linndrum machine, and the newly created MIDI technology. The world of musical possibilities and sound choices became completely unlimited. One person, using one keyboard and a simple computer, could have an entire orchestra in their basement, on demand, which allowed for more sophisticated ideas to evolve. The British New Wave artists created an entirely new genre of music using digital technology. So, I guess that the haunting quality of those 80s tunes are due to layering various sounds to create that soundscape, similar to the Phil Spector concept, but much more complex. Brilliant musicians, coupled with brilliant producers, facilitated by freshly invented digital technology. We’ll never again see such a revolution in music.
The best way for me to describe the song is "ethereal," especially given its own inspiration from Khalil Gibran. I could also say it seems proto-shoegaze in approach. I'll offer my story: I know that 1985 wasn't a great year for me health-wise, but when I first heard this, I couldn't help but think that being able to listen to this helped me put my life (such as it was then) in better perspective. Unfortunately, it was only the radio edit at the time and I felt a bit cheated (although I got to hear the album version some time later). Even at 4:20 or so, I still thought 3:30 was the standard for radio play and it didn't stretch to 4 minutes until the next decade. Nevertheless, it's that final note from Richard that sealed it for me...I've never forgotten that plaintive wail of his.
It seems like there is a black screen behind the music. Like they exist in the vacuum of space. At least that's what I see in my head when I hear those songs. Maybe they muted all the tracks when they weren't active so there is no background noise, hum or anything.
I will always remember this song when it came out in "85. Was going through my first heartbreak with Cindy but wasn't able to win her heart. Never wanted to go through that again but I did a few years ago with Priscilla. Oh the pain.
Professor -- brother, this right here is why I love this channel! The thing I love about this album is, for me, I think the B side of the album was superior to the A side. It's one of those cool aspects to the "album/cassette era" where you started from the first song and played it all the way through without skipping around. I still think "Is It Love" is right up there with "Broken Wings" and "Kyrie" in terms of just a great song all around with a bonus killer drum/synth/bass intro. And Richard doesn't hit a bad note on any of the songs! Great interview! Well done! Thanks for keeping the flame lit for this amazing music.
If I had to choose a single favorite 80s song, it would probably be Broken Wings. It's a great track on its own, it's wonderfully evocative and representative of the mid-80s sound while still having its own highly unique vibe, and it's not so overplayed that it's lost its power. Other "Most 80s of the 80s" tracks like Billie Jean, or Hungry Like The Wolf, or Africa are almost punchlines at this point due to parody and overuse, but Broken Wings still resonates. Thanks so much for the extra information about it!

Okay, now THAT is a cool little factoid! Never heard that before, so thanks for sharing!
They also sang on a few Kenny Loggins albums in the 80’s and DeBarge’s “Who’s Holding Donna Now”.
I remember leaving St Louis for good after a bad break up and hearing this song and my freedom.
Kyrie is another great song.
Richard Page has a powerful enchanting voice lead vocalist Mr. Mister. Beautiful inspiring music. Great musicians. Iconic. 🎤🎸🎹🥁💯🎶♥️💋❤️
My favorite song of all time 💖
I'm so happy to see Richard Page talking about all the music that was the soundtrack of my life - great interview!
This song = proof that Richard Page is one UNDERRATED bassist!
Always loved "Is it love". Was kinda overlooked. It sounds so much like 80's! "Broken Wings" ist just amazing. There are a lot of dark songs in the 80's.
I kind of think that one and Kyrie are maybe the upbeat bubblegum chick songs on the album, Broken Wings is the one for grown ups.
One absolutely iconic songs of the 80s. What a absolutely amazing song. Thus song is part of my youth, and will go with me when I leave planet earth.
My favorite Mr. Mister album is "Go On".... I love every song... such a complete album. I don't know why it wasn't pushed the way it should have been.
Richard Page = Legend
I always liked their song "Something Real" from 1987. Never really caught on at radio, but it still ranks among their best.
Thanks for sharing!
Its good yep. Also song Control is so Sting style, very interesting one.
Something Real is one of my faves as well but it actually was recorded the first time in 1985.
I don't care what inspired this man to make this song but this is one of the greatest masterpieces ever.
This song, one of great ones that kept me going in High School, was one that I liked to identify with a specific group of friends who helped me back up during a time period of utter devastation. They helped me recover from being mired in anger after my parents split, and the song just helped me heal. Absolutely wonderful stuff.
Powerful story, thank you for sharing. Music has a great power of healing about it.
I love the song. The guitars in it are magical.
Fantastic interview!
one of my fav bands of all time...
Welcome to the Real World is a true masterpiece for me.
Great song and Richard Page has such a great voice. I thank Mr Mister for what that song brings to my life.
Cool interview. I've always loved Richard's voice, and got to see Mr. Mister on the Welcome to the Real World tour, where they were phenomenal.
Would love to hear your memories from that show
That signature echoey sound of the guitar is so iconic and lends the song that special, evocative, mysterious sound that pulls you in
Great song...wow PoR, you’ve been on fire lately with your superb content, stories, and interviews! 🔥🔥🔥Superb!
Kile Math Glad you dig the episode! Thanks for being part of our community.
@@ProfessorofRock Thank you, Professor! Excellent interviews and work that you do!!! Love watching your programs!
What an honestly lovely man.
Fun fact: Mr. Mister's drummer, Pat Mastelotto, is one of the three (!) drummers of the current incarnation of King Crimson.
He’s been playing with King Crimson for 25 years.
Another fun fact i call my crimson king Pat Mastelotto
May he rest in peace.
Terry Stowers - Pat is still very much alive.
But RIP to Bill Rieflin.
Grandad Neal I call my crimson king Satan, the Morningstar, Beelzebub, the First of The Fallen.
one of my favorite vocals to ever lived! Richard Page what a legend!
Broken Wings is a master piece.... I have an original copy of 1985...Welcome to the Real World...
I love Mr. Mister, one of my favorite 1980's song. Genius song, beautiful interview with Richard Page. Thank you!!!
I know what you mean, an illusive description.
So true! I'd add Duran Duran "Save a Prayer" to that list. The spooky undertones of synths
Killer vocals!! He Stood and Delivered!
It always meant for me a symbol for transcending my limits...into a better place. This one and Corey Hart's never surrender 😀👍🙏🕯️🎵🎼🎶🌠
Yes! Take these broken wings! Best shirt ever BTW!
Right on, thank you!
Broken Wings is the 80s anthem for me. It's the sound of retro & nostalgia. It gives me chills.
Is Broken Wings anyone else's demo song for a new stereo? That intro!
