Today I am introducing a really special car. My 1999 Mercedes C43 AMG also known as The Pocket Rocket.
AMG was a company which started in 1967 by 2 Germany engineers. They use to bump up the horse power, add flares, add wider tires, and enhance the over all performance of the car. Both these engineer were working on 300SE engine in development department when Daimler-Benz shut down all motor sports activities. After that these 2 engineers left Mercedes and started there own company that we now know as AMG and built the legendary 300SEL 6.8 litre also known as The Pig, that was the champion in its class and won 2nd over all in 24 hours of Spa race in 1971. After that both those engineers got peoples attention, and the super rich that wanted to show off there wealth would buy Mercedes E class, SE, And SL and take it to AMG to make it a performance vehicle. They would become rare and special cars. The reason why C43 is special is because it was the second model after the C36 AMG with AMG upgrade from Mercedes dealership directly. The C43 is a milestone car because it was a joined venture, and is the first C class with a V8. The C43 is ultra rare, because Canada only received 158 in year 1998 and 1999. The Mercedes C43 has 307 HP, does 0-60 mph in 5.2 seconds even though I know it does it faster that I will time and show in the driving section. It has a 5 speed auto transmission. The engine of the C43 is naturally aspirated V8 with a lot of torque that revs up to 7000 rpm, and the torque is available right away with zero lag. The C43 has a upgraded suspension then a normal w202. AMG exhaust, flared fender, and ungraded sway bar. It is also nick named the Pocket Rocket, because when Mercedes released this car people were surprised how did Mercedes install such a big engine is such a small sedan.
Another unique feature of the car is that it came with staggered monoblocks. Monoblock means that the wheel was formed by one piece of aluminium, and straggered means the rear wheel lip is deeper then the front lip.
Good examples of these cars started to go up in value. At one point they were cheap car people bought them, and drove them to extinction that is why they aren’t many good examples left. But now they are catching collectors and car enthusiasts attention. The value has gone up, and is still rising. Mind you, this is only true for the cars that are well kept and low in km. Another great thing about these cars is that they do not need a lot of maintenance these engine are built to last. To keep the car in top mechanical condition the only thing you need to be mindful of the transmission fluid. That must be changed regularly.
Lastly if you find a low km nice Mercedes C43 buy it, they are worth the investment, rising in value, collectable, history important, and a pleasure to drive. This little Mercedes C43 AMG ticks all the right boxes.

I know a guy who's had one since I can remember....it's mint and he drives it like a normal car. He knows what it's worth and not one kid has ever messed with this car.

I only last week bought aC43 wagon.
Not driven it much as sorting some bit first.
Leaking rocker cover gaskets seems they suffer with this.
A d detailing it inc a 2 stage machine polish.
Mine is metallic blue with black leather my central console dash and door caps are black carbon look. Bose stereo, Sunroof. I really like it. Think I still prefer my W126 500 sel. But time will tell.
I've got a c36 and c43, love the 3.6 as that was a true AMG engine before Mercedes took over AMG and I feel it has a better AMG kit/appearance and just as fast. I'm Breaking a C36 AMG at the mo which is going in my W124. It's an addiction oh and I've got the ultra rare W210 3.6 AMG.

I agree. I had a chance to acquire a C36, but something dragged me towards the C43 AMG. I agree with you 100%. The C36 has a better AMG kit, and it looks nicer aesthetically.
The W210 3.6 AMG is special.

Lol I own the 1998 c43, it has 290k miles on it and I got her in the shop right now but definitely some decent power for the age.

I had 2 1998s & both needed transmissions replaced. Didn’t matter with the maintenance. I gave the silver one with 2 tone interior as a present & kept the other that’s Obsidian Black with black interior. I put E55 engine plus under pulleys & ECU tune. I put close to 300K miles on it until I sold it. I sob when I see pictures of it. I miss the C43s.
How hard was the e55 swap I’m 15 currently restoring mine and want to do one in the future
I have a 2000 model year in burgundy. Only 25 imported into the US that year and only 1 in burgundy.
Keep it! Don't let it go.. I have a 99 Blk one. Had it for about 4 yrs now..170K miles on her, I put a trans from a CLK55 in her.. She's back on the road after sitting for almost a year.. Amazing car. I absolutely love it. Can't get rid of her. 💯💪🏼

Eric, you can’t go wrong with a Mercedes C43 AMG. I owned a lot of Mercedes, and the C43 is something else. It is so raw, and just a pleasure to drive. I just can’t define how much I love this car. 😊
For old classic Mercedes where could you get the replacement part? For example I could not get the oem mono wiper assembly for 1991 300 E w124. Greatly appreciate if you can help
Hello @rdd5990 ,usually my MB mechanic sources all the parts for me. But you can join W124 forum, and you might come across a member who is selling a oem wiper assembly. Or visit a local junk yard. Here in Vancouver we have Ace German Used Parts LTD he usually has hard to find parts. Maybe you can give him a call.

I love mine. The 5.0 0-60 is believable. I saw another W202 comparison that clocked it at 5.2. I had a 91 MR Turbo that was usually tested in the low 6's, and a 99 M3 that was usually mid to high 5's. This car definitely feels faster than both. Mine is silver and on some forums people call the silver C43s the "silver bullet" because they believe the silver ones are faster. I swear this car has two ECU modes. Most of the time it feels the same. But every so often it seems to flip to another mode where it is noticeably faster. Independent of atmospheric conditions. Not sure if it is my perception or what.

You described it so well. I agree with you 110%. I drove my car 2 days ago, and o boy it felt so much faster. I don’t know if you have noticed it with your car, but my car is much faster at night.. lol.... My friends think I am crazy.
I can also attest to this, I have a 1999 C43. I believe there are two modes with the ECU, one for spirited driving and the other for more slow driving. I would assume it would detect this based on how you push the pedal.
The facelift W202s with the 5-speed automatic have a "learning" gearbox as far as I know. Depending on how you drive it it will shift earlier, rev higher and so on. So when you push it hard for some time it might adapt to your driving style.
@@noahh914 Thanks for your input. Yeah I think it does that but what we are discussing is the output of the engine. Which of course the transmission behavior could affect the feeling of. I don't know if you have one but per the above comments there really does seem to be a "hidden" ECU program.
