Love this video. I've found that when I grow bored with clients, I can quickly tell if it's me because it stays throughout the day, and if it's with the client it happens every session only with them. And you're spot on for reasons with clients. I believe process comments are great in these moments (focusing on the themes of their struggles, not my boredom). I also know my response may inform how others respond to them so I check in with how supported they feel by others when they are going through something.
More and more frequently I feel getting really bored with very young clients, like 3-5 year olds. Especially if they feel reluctant to come in and are not interested in sandtray therapy which is the method that the parents have chosen me for. I find myself bending over backwards to get the children to get engaged and start dreading these sessions. I used to be very stressed about this since child psychology is kind of my niche in my town, and I am known to be good at it. But now I notice I never ever get bored with grown-up clients and feel myself more and more unwilling to take on very young clients, but it's hard switching clientele. However, I take this boredom to mean that perhaps I should pivot, even though I've put so much time, energy and money into working with children.
lol my way of coping with boredom has been to learn new modalities. EMDR trained, brainspotting trained and working towards cert, and now heading into sex therapy training.
