The Romantic road is lovely, but also well known and can be stacked with tourists in high season. An alternative, not really a stretch of road but a community of cities with charm and a lot of half-timbered houses, is the Deutsche Fachwerkstrasse if you want ideas for other charming cities. Note that the possible queen of such cities, Goslar, is not even a member. As I am recently retired and have the time, I hiked the Romantic road, or close to it at least - no need to hike the major highway. Took two weeks but a great experience!
