How to Rotoscope in 3 Minutes

  • In this video, I explain how to rotoscope using Adobe After Effects and Photoshop. First, choose a video and upload it to Adobe After Effects. Then export your clip as a PNG sequence. There may be repeats of the same frame so pay attention. Next, import the PNGs to Photoshop and add a layer, so you don't paint directly on the clip. You can do this in Illustrator as well, but I like to use Photoshop. After using the paint tool to create an image, I exported it as a PNG. Make sure to number the PNGs in the correct order and to put them in the same folder of your computer. Lastly, import the PNG sequence into Adobe After Effects and change the composition settings to the desired frame rate. To save, export the video to add the adobe media encoder queue and adjust the video settings. When it's done hit the green play button and the animation should save to your computer.
    The original video I animated over: • Take Me With You
    Full animation: • Short Dance Animation

    This is so Time consuming cos you have to edit every frame separately in photoshop . But There are many other ways to do so easier and faster like masking the dancers or just using the rotobrush tool .

      Honestly, rotobrush tools are in almost every program an extreme pain to use and oftentimes will just crash your Computer because the CPU load is really heavy. Doing it in Photoshop or GIMP is not only way faster once you got your controls down and/ or a Graphics tablet, but also cleaner since you can really put some detailwork into the edges.

    Question:
    1. Did you just rotoscope that 1 frame and save everything accordingly and Adobe stuff does the rest?
    2. Or did you do the rotoscope for each and every frame?
    If you did method 1. .then this is freakishly awesome!!
    If you did method 2..then better do it all withing after effects

    • @BlackCat_Dream

      I painted every file because that was the class assignment. There is a way to create a mask in adobe after effects and animate the mask. There are a lot of helpful tutorials about it if you search “how to animate a mask in adobe after effects”. I’m not a very knowledgeable animator but I hope this was helpful.

    Do we have to paint on all the pngs separately in Ps?

    • @BlackCat_Dream
      @BlackCat_Dream  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes since animation works by presenting a sequence of still images (in this case PNGs) in quick enough succession, the viewer interprets them as a continuous moving image. Make sure you have a PNG painting for every PNG video file. To make the process of painting PNGs faster you can duplicate one and then erase and paint over it to match the new image, so you don’t have to redraw the whole thing.

    this is misleading... you're not rotoscoping in 3 minutes you're transferring files from after effects to photoshop, you're painting each frame which might take you 3 minutes but over the period of 300 frames you've spent hours then you bring in to AE and the Rotoscoped is jumpy... this is not professional rotoscoping this is painting video in photoshop.. there's a difference.. I'll tell you what I just wasted 3 minutes watching something that doesn't help.

    Here is a much easier way: With a new document 1920x1080 (or whatever size) open in photoshop, make sure your timeline window is open, if not, go to window, timeline. Go to Layer, Video Layers, New video layer from file. Select your video file. Next, go to Layer, Video Layers, New Blank Video Layer. Make sure your new blank video layer is selected, start drawing over your video. Click on the next frame in the timeline window, repeat. When your done drawing all the frames, turn off your original video layer and go to File, Export, Render video. Select Photoshop Image Sequence, and PNG in render settings (if you want the pngs)
