  • From her 1999 album, Sleepless.
    Lyrics;
    Billy's fair and Billy's rare
    And Billy's wondrous bonny
And Billy promised to marry me
    If e'er he'd marry any
And Billy promised to marry me
    If e'er he'd marry any
Late last night I'm in my bed
    Waiting on my lover
And there I waited all night long
    My heart won't take another
Oh there I waited all night long
    My heart won't take another
Came you by yon water side
    Past the rose and lily
Or came you by yon meadow green
Or saw you my sweet Billy
Or came you by yon meadow green
Or saw you my sweet Billy
    She's sought him east
    And she's sought him west
She sought him broad and narrow
She sought him in another's arms
    The fairest of all Yarrow
She sought him in another's arms
    The fairest of all Yarrow

Seeing her live is magic- she's so down to earth and unpretentious.

She lives in the same town I do - when she's not touring, she does a lot of singing in the local pubs :P

I heard her music and voice on a programme about the dales last week and instantly wanted to find out about her I was playing Kate Rusby music all weekend could not get enough. My DVD of the live in Leeds concert DVD is bought and on its way to me this week hopefully before the weekend.
I live in Rotherham and I am tempted to go to the gig in Halifax but if you know of a gig nearer there will be a drink behind the bar for you. I can`t believe she is so unknown, what a great lass bril

@KITCHENOFDISTINCTION I can understand where you're coming from. Some of my countrymen tend to think we own folk music. I love English folk. I'm also a big Vaughan Williams fan. Fair comment.

Is your sleeping pillow our Kate? Is your resting breath our Kate? Is that peace in you our Kate? A voice to calm when gentleness is needed. x

Wonderful. She is so talented. I love the way she sings, the way she writes, and how her songs harken back to another age. It is like listening to 19th Century Irish folk music sung by a 21st Century genius who sounds like an angel. When I listen to her, my mind and soul drift off towards green shores, fair winds, and a rising sun.

Beautiful!! I hope KR comes to Seattle or Vancouver BC some day. If not I guess I'll have to visit the UK to see her live!

@flippyxadomp Yes, she did a rerecording of this song on her album "10," celebrating the first ten years of her career. This is probably the version that you have. This original version is from the album "Sleepless."

Yarrow is the now obsolescent name of a parish located in Scotland in the Scottish Borders area. P.s. I like your profile picture. Pre-Raphaelite art is my favorite, particularly Waterhouse.

I saw her at Cambridge and she sang a bunch of Christmas songs none I'd heard before any every song was excellent. My next Rusby gig is Lavenham I've heard nothing to say when this is. Does anyone have news they could share with me. When is it going to happen?

I really like the production of her music some engineer with a good ear for the songs and arrangement, and of course the hard job of watching and listening to the singer

I really love this, but I wish she's kept more of the original ballad in it; the change of 'Willie' into 'Billy' is of course totally fine but I do prefer the original ending, in which the speaker finds [Billy] after he's drowned in the water of Gamrie. In most versions, the speaker joins their love, so to speak, in the water of Gamrie, although in others it just ends when they find the body. This version is really lovely, though, I was really happy to stumble across it.

I believe you might be thinking of a different song - The Drowned Lovers. Kate has also done an amazing version of that one which is no doubt on here somewhere...

I have a different version of this songer where she's singing slightly higher and faster. Did she release the song twice?

this has a completely different feeling than when the song is sung in its alternate tune.

You don't belong here, Andrea McDaniel. Your comment is intelligent, informative, well written and complimentary. It even has a word of four syllables.
I prefer the more routine angry, irrational, foul-mouthed, often incomprehensible and usually barely literate TH-cam commenters. They make me laugh.

I like Kate Rusby but also find her incredibly annoying. There hardly is ever any sense of tempo or timing in her songs. This one is in 3/4 but you'd never know! Also, after a few songs she seems more a one trick pony as every song starts to sound the same.

This type of song is all about the emotions in the voice, itself really. In fact, I'd prefer to listen to her without the music, live, somewhere nice.
Can't say anything about other songs, I've just discovered her.

Every Woody Guthrie song starts the same. And that is just the starting example.
