I once searched for this song for a week straight. That was how beautiful I thought it was. My how it opened up a door to a whole room filled with her music. Incredible musician.
Saw her in Liverpool. Bought my brother and I tickets for her concert at the Hill harmonic Hall. He'd never heard of her. Noticed he went quiet throughout the concert and at the end turned to me and said "She's bloody good 'int she". Made my night.
When you feel down just listen to Kate's beautiful voice, have a good cry and then you will feel there is a future. Can't wait for Cardiff gig in a few weeks.
Just heard her sing this in the flesh last Thursday in Tunbridge Wells and it was amazingly moving. As tonight is Halloween will sing it as one of my ghost stories but of course it wont be a patch on hers.
Oh my word, Kate Rusby has one of the most beautiful, enchanting voices I've ever heard. I just love her album "Sleepless" and I will definitely be purchasing more of her albums after hearing this. Each song is as capturing as the next. Thank you for uploading this :)
All I would say, is do not allow a lost love to ruin your entire life ! It can do, yet if you open up your heart and mind there will always be another out there for you......
My favourite english folk song - forsaken love with a touch of metaphysical mystery. Beautiful. And perfectly understated vocal delivery. Play it to X factor wannabees.
It's a man singing of his heartbreak and desolation because the love of his life has been wooed away from him by his landlord, a James Reynolds. "Here I stand/Empty heart, empty hand/While he has my true love/And he has the land." She doesn't even love him anymore, Reynolds could offer her a better life, so he "..wish them no rest/Like the heart in my breast" has no rest. He's still alive, but now with no hope of love, family and happy home, as he grows older, so he's lost the will to live: "No more she'll fly/No more she will cry/All over the cold earth/Beneath which I'll lie". He's fallen foul of the class system, because of his lack of silver spoon at birth. "Sing high, lowly/At the end of the day." To some extent, it's an encapsulation of Thomas Hardy's _The Woodlanders._
She is known in English folk singing circles as "The Barnsley Nightingale". She is from Yorkshire in the north of England. Or, as they call it, "God's county").
What I especially like about her singing is precisely that she sings in her unfiltered Barnsley accent. Too many people adopt that phony mid-Atlantic thing, especially in rock and R&B (eg Adele) or an RP or other non-working class London accent rather than being true to their roots. So many of her songs are from the north of England and are about working class life and traumas, so it's right and proper.
at the person being a complete jerk in this comments section, the one throwing glitter everywhere, she is covering another's song, from another's point of view. It has nothing to do with her sexual orientation. Now, I'd love it, as would everyone here, if you'd stop being rude, get off the computer, and learn some good or better spelling. Thanks.
Lynne Gill really you should learn to ignore something that's offensive to you if it's not doing anyone any harm and maybe examine why it's offensive to you in the first place before assuming you're adult enough to join a conversation that doesn't involve you.
The TH-cam comment facility is an open forum. There's no such thing as 'doesn't involve you.' Everything involves everybody. And it's perfectly normal in folk music for singers to cover songs written from the point of view of the opposite sex.
Is anyone else still listening to this in 2023? Never tire of these beautiful songs. Thank you Kate for so many happy memories. X
Me! I love this song too 😊
Yup. CLATTERFORD : as ageless and lovely as Kate's voice...

Lord, what an extraordinary voice! The Lord gifted her with a gorgeous instrument! ❤
Saw her in Liverpool. Bought my brother and I tickets for her concert at the Hill harmonic Hall. He'd never heard of her. Noticed he went quiet throughout the concert and at the end turned to me and said "She's bloody good 'int she". Made my night.

It is an easy thing for one whose foot is on the outside of calamity to give advice and to rebuke the sufferer.

I die an exquisite little death each time I hear this song.
Such a soothing song. Makes me think of a beautiful Irish or Scottish sunset.
Why not an English one?

one of my favourite Kate songs......any idea which of hers is her own favourite?
Mary me Kate😍🤗😇😚
I feel like I should be somewhere in Spain, wearing a red tunic and shako and sitting by a campfire eating soup while listening to this.
Or a dark green jacket.
Underrated song
Such a beautiful, lullabic song. But... is it about the ghost of a man whose love now loves someone else?
It's a man singing of his heartbreak and desolation because the love of his life has been wooed away from him by his landlord, a James Reynolds. not necessarily a man
she must be irish, she sounds like the singer of the cranberries, very beautiful voice.
+lostinamerica Much more angelic sounding than Dolores o'Riordan

She is from South Yorkshire

@Rozie Kate did.
Me!
Does anyone know who wrote the music and lyrics and when they were written?
Thanks.
Kate wrote them.

Hear hear. People see a 'trendy' comment and have to use it whenever they can. They think it makes them sound knowledgable. Sad.
In case anyone has`nt realised this is a song about a ghost looking at what his wife is up to now he is dead!
@sameoldfitup2008 But there's no England any more. - The Kinks.
how very unkind to wish to inflict unpleasant weather on others!
She's singing about a giii-iiirl *throws glitter and pirouettes away*
It's from a man's point of view. She's covering the song. A lot of her songs arre covers from other points of view.
shuuutt uuuuppp aaaannndd goooo awaaaayyy *throws glitter and pirouettes away*
Really, you know, you should do a spot of listening and maybe reading before you join in commenting with the grown-ups.
