@@14th.aquarius I did my little research, wikipedia funningly does list this song as a song about child abuse. So both might be true. But especially the line "you are too old to be so shy" kind of speaks to me as a lame excuse, something you'd tell a girl that actually IS too young
I think you're the only person here who actually gets it 😂 Everyone else is projecting their personal interpretation onto the lyrics/meaning, which is fine; but you nailed it.
I’ve lost my virginity with 14 to a 21 year old guy I’ve went with him because I thought I was to old to be so shy I used to listen a lot to this song a lot in this time Now I’m crying everytime I hear it
For the longest time I avoided this song because it relates to me on a painful level, but now after listening to it again after a long while it has become beautiful and meaningful to me. Thanks Daughter❤
i, too, have done the same thing. i was only 15 when i heard this song and fell in love. but those younger years were... they were just dim. once i thought i was already seeing a little light i refused listening to this song, and other songs from daughter, bon iver, the paper kites... a lot more. i didn't want to be reminded of those years. now i'm 22 and it sounds different now. sounds like a memory.
Just saying I love the meaning of this song. Like she is growing up and her idea of love is slowly dying. She has to face reality for the first time, first heart break. Forcing her to grow up "blow out all the candles = grow up". And the part where it says "like we are on a crime scene" it's because her innocence died... Wow so Deep and sad.
for me this song represents a girl who lost her virginity to someone who didn't love her when she loved them, basically half forced into as "you're too old to be so shy he says to me so i stay the night" then the crime scene part represents the blood when you lose your virginity. It was sacred to her but the boy didn't care and used her
I'm with you except that the boy didn't use her. She DECIDED to do it; in fact, her decision is what makes this song, and love in itself, so sad and depressingly beautiful sometimes. You know you won't get to keep the object of your affection but, at least, you'll have a lovely memory. Sad yet beautiful.
when i first heard this song, i thought it was romantic and cute. listening to the lyrics more deeply, and not just the vibe, it becomes obvious the narrative is referring to an abusive relationship.
Am I the only one who thinks this is a song about being abused as a child by a family member and later struggling to get close to any other man?
actually, a girl have lost her virginity to someone who didn;t love her as she loved him. so deep
That's what I hear too

*"and I torch my dreams" it's what it's supposed to say, I think.
it's also supposed to say I'll never be "your" lover
