- Welcome to Wednesday afternoon trains from Schony747.
This video features The Train Driver Bernie Baker and other SSR train crew driving Locomotives SSR GM27 and 442s2 which were hauling the ARTC AK test measuring cars around parts of the ARTC track network and other freight trains that I captured during the day.
This happened to be Bernie Baker's last rostered work as a commercial train driver before heading into retirement and probably hours of extra behind the scenes work on the preserved railway scene. Bernie like his father was a career railway man and was always popular among railway enthusiasts. Bernie didn't disappoint the fans with plenty of horn shows and waves as he went past the people coming to say goodbye track side.

Great career Bernie..taught many of us how to handle horsepower with gusto. Thanks for the memories from a fellow Pegleg buddy..good luck in retirement.

@@Schony747 Like his father, Jack, a knowledgeable bloke who gave much of himself and to the wider rail and transport community both here and overseas. Hope someone gets to produce a program about him or assists in a book tribute/biography.
Many years ago when Bernie lived in Bendigo, I used to go to his house with my uncle who also used to work as a train driver. At that stage Bernie was in the middle of building a HO layout and was building the cab of an X class (i think it was) so he could operate his layout from inside the cab.
I've never met the man but from all accounts that wouldn't surprise me.
Happy to retirement to Bernie! In my opinion, he had THE perfect job! I could think of no better job than an interstate train driver, strange I know, being a woman. Thanks Brendon for always posting awesome stuff for us all to enjoy!

That would have been nice to receive the wave. Lovely seeing that old station glad you included it,hope people value these buildings from our past. Interesting filming of the stationary train with the other passing it.
You've summed it up completely. People want a story and some interest. Without the storyline, it would have just been another train passing the camera. Thanks always.

Just a few questions, when was the last grain train to goto Portland, those rails have abit of rust on them ?
So a train going to Portland from Melbourne does it need to disconnect the loco's & come to the back end to goto Portland that's how it looks or is there another spur line for the Melbourne train to turn into ?
When will double stack containers be a reality for Perth bound trains out of Melbourne?

Generally most grains to Portland run from the Wimmera. If the train was coming from Melbourne the locos would need to be turned. No grain trains for at least two years. That all changes today 19th of June with the first grain to appear on the line again.

Bit unrelated to the main topic of the video (but still somewhat part of the video), but I think NR66 has the best horn of all the NR locomotives
I think NR49 does now cause NR66’s got changed a bit
How long do freight trains in Australia run? The trains I've seen in the videos here all look to be under 1 km long, the freight trains we have here in the U.S. can get as long as 3 km to 5 km and there can sometimes be as many as 5 to 10 locos out front then sometimes another 2 to 4 locos in the middle or on the tail end of the train.
I'm going to guess that the grade of railroads is much less in Australia than in the U.S., average grade of mainline track here is 2.2% with the steepest ever being the Saluda Grade south of Asheville,North Carolina owned by the Norfolk Southern RR but that track was taken out of service in 2001 now the steepest mainline grade is a 3.3% grade in Raton Pass in New Mexico.
Freight trains are generally limited to 1.8km long. Most trains are shorter than that due to the size of crossing loops etc. Double stacking is limited to trains between Adelaide and Perth or Darwin due to low bridges. Some of the coal trains in Queensland and Western Australia are longer than freight trains as well. I hope that gives you some idea.
@@Schony747 Ok thanks for the info. I love being able to see trains from other parts of the world, 15 to 20 years ago I would have never guessed I would be able to watch videos of trains on TH-cam.
Australia wins the prize for longest straight stretch of track in the world at 478 km on the Trans-Australian Railway between Loongana, Western Australia and Ooldea, South Australia. Just found that fact when I was looking up info on track grade in the U.S.

I was just trying to share some info I fond about railroading nothing more or less. As this is a video/channel about trains/rail fanning, I thought some people would like to know.

I am an American who knows that just because something is made in America that doesn't make it bigger or better then things made in other parts of the world and I know other Americans who feel as I do. You shouldn't believe in stereotypes.
