There is strategy in tug of war for sure. Putting the rope between your armpit allows you to better leverage the most powerful muscles in your body - your back and your legs - instead of your arms. Your arms will give out much faster than your legs or back. You also have more leverage because you're pulling from your hips to hour shoulders versus the curl movement of your arms. You point your feet straight so you can steady your full body weight against your opponent by locking your legs. You put the strongest people at the front and the back because those positions bare the most force acting against with the least at the center. But the most important thing is to move in rhythm together. It's like rowing a boat with 10 people. If you don't move together and act with the same force then the boat will spin and energy is wasted if you're trying to move in one direction (backwards). To avoid spinning around and wasting energy, move together. Which is why grunting with each pull is crucial to build the rhythm.

That grunting together to maintain synergy is a great point. As a martial artist, we used to use loud kiyaps(yells) in live demonstrations in front of large audiences to keep the entire group moving at the exact same time. Excellent call out.

Wellz is talking about "the illusion of choice". The powerful lead people into situations where it's A or B options, and that's it. There is no "no" choice. There is no opting out. The people making the choice believe there's no alternative they're stuck between a rock and a hard place and either choice sucks but they must choose. But in reality, the powerful created these scenarios and removed "no" as a choice, creating an illusion of choice.
In this game, you can't say "no" to the game because outside world will kill or drown you in problems, in the game you can die, you have no real options because the system will kill you or the powerful running the game will.
I see where you're coming from, but not liking a choice doesn't mean you don't have one. It might suck, but you just have to get your way out of the trouble you're in. It's still a choice just not one you may want to deal with.

Both options lead to the same result. Thats why its called an illusion of choice. You technically do have a choice but doesn't matter what you choose

Just because the more difficult choices take place in the game, doesn't mean that's where we, as the audience, have start our thought process. They voted to all go home, and then made the CHOICE to go back in! So I do hear what you're saying, but I personally am taking every choice into account.

My fav part of this episode is seeing everyone' reaction to the cliffhanger
The first time you see Ali’s missing fingers is episode 2 when he shows up at his old job looking for the money he is owed for the last six months. You get to see it (albeit briefly) when his boss is sitting behind the computer and Ali tells him that he can’t even afford his medical bills. This episode is just the first time where it’s given major attention in a frame.
By the end of the episode, all four ya'll were sitting on the edge of the couch. The show is that good.
I love this episode purely for the old mans strategy scene.

Ali missing 2 fingers was featured in episode 2 when he went to his boss' office to get paid, during that encounter while both of them are in the office, Ali puts his hand (with missing fingers) out to the boss guy about how he wasn't not able to pay the hospital bills for his injury on the job, etc., i hope i'm recalling this correctly as it's been a while since watching that ep.

17:58 This part, I saw a japanese documentary show and they were doing tug of war in that position - both feet facing forward, leaning back and maximizing their body weight. It showed that 4 ppl can comfortably withstand a pull by 8-9 ppl who were doing the "normal" pull in that position. The 4 were also using special kind of shoes that maximize friction though. It's still a legit strategy I suppose
