I started playing in 2012, and I loved Blazing Specter, Nightveil Specter, and Liliana’s Specter as a kid. I just thought they looked awesome - very fearsome creatures, indeed!
Specters are cool, like Wraiths and Shades I feel like they don't get enough attention. Would be cool if those three "ghosty" creature types got enough supporting cards to become the black equivalent of blue's "sea monsters".
I'll disagree with you in the same direction. I think the KLOS batching has caused each to lose a bit of their personal identity- so much that people are continuing to ask Maro to just use "sea monster" instead. I'd hate to see Wraiths or Specters get folded into a category like that.
Sedraxis Specter will always hold a special place for me as Grixis was the first deck I played when I got back into Magic during Shards of Alara block. Nightveil Specter is still my favourite though; I really enjoyed Theros standard.
Coincidentally I actually looked them up the other day and was shocked by how there are so few despite feeling so iconic to me. I guess that was just nostalgia goggles since I play some in my Necropotence deck where I can rip apart hands in casual games.
I had so much fun running a deck with Liliana's Spectre and Mimic Vat, popping the Vat on the opponent's Draw Step to make them discard before their Main Phase.
I remember fresh into Magic in the early 2000s, I pulled a Hypnotic Spectre foil on the day 1 of M9's release. That card was so beautiful I still have the photos, but I had to sell it given it was a day 1 pull. Went for $150 to a guy in Canada.
I play Lilianas Specter in my Tergrid deck. It's not the best card with an etb that makes all opponents discard. But it's still cheap enough on mana that you still get a ton of value from it. Not to mention mass reanimation when it dies.
Birds of Paradise is the best 60-card Constructed mana dork and Llanowar Elves and Lord of Atlantis see fringe play in Modern. It's janky, but I would have fun playing Royal Assassin.
@collinbeal Yea I totally overlooked the manadorks. Those ofc are great value. Good point about Lord of Atlantis. That's another creature from the early sets who's meant to attack that actually provides some decent value proposition.
Hypnotic Specter is probably my favorite creature ever, sure it can die to a Lightning Bolt but the moment your oponent doesn't has a response for the hippie things will become pretty rough for him/her. For things like that is that i love Premodern and Old School, even if i probably never get to play the latter due to how expensive it is.
Most likely it would ruin a draft environment at UC. Imagine facing the guy who got 2-3 in his pool and just rips your e the gameplan up, even if you do remove the first one.
It's more that creatures need to impact the game in some way to be competitively viable, even if they get removed right away. A creature with no impact on the game state except causing your opponent to use a removal spell is not potent enough to be used in tournament play, because it's too low a value.
@@Neo_Life If the game state is that extreme then yes it needs to be depowered infact it should have been recognized years ago that it needed a depowering, think about just how many cards arnt playable by the metric that if it doesnt do something when it leaves you shouldnt play it, hell think about how much that constrains card design!

Honestly, I'm not a huge Halloween guy. Mostly because as an Australian you kinda ingrain it in you that Halloween is an American imported capitalist ploy. But thanks to Ghostricks, your passion for it, and the inner rich white girl that lives inside us all, I'm coming around to it. Maybe not the more recent generation where Halloween and specifically trick or treating seems to have fallen off the face of the world, but I went trick or treating as a kid once and even then everyone made fun of Halloween for being American. You say a creature has to do something when it enters the battlefield for its segment, right after a segment about another 3 mana 2/2 Flying Specter that has to get in for damage to do anything that saw play in 2020.
They should bring random discard back. Not in a crazy way, but... "2 colorless, 1 black, instant: Draw a card. Each Opponent discards a card at random." Something like that. Seeing a specter in the harry potter set without any real discard mechanic attached to it is depressing as well

Yeah Wraiths have support now because of the Nazgûl, but Shades and Specters still need some love

Love the flavor reasons for the specters. It’s cool that Wizards keeps printing new ones from time to time to keep the tradition going.
Specter of Mortality gives me a feel very similar to Steel Hellkite.
