    I think that you are a Karate Genius! Your videos never fail but to thrill inspire and delight me! And I am so VERY impressed with your imaginative and constructive teaching style! This one was an especial pleasure to watch! And of course Sir, I am sure that a Great Man like yourself had already appreciated this; if you substitute a Kama for the Chishi in your enchanting Kata you have a perfect Kobudo Kata for cqb and ecq combat! Wonderful! Kata makes everything perfect at so many levels. As do your entirely fascinating videos!

    A lovely clear demonstration on the use of chi ishi. It is the asymmetrical nature of the chi ishi that makes it challenge the core and stabilizing muscles. One is compelled to become aware of co-ordination and integration of the arm movement. The movement should not just be a swinging of the arms using momentum to move the chishi. There should be a deliberate and conscious awareness of each movement. This is what develops the joints and sinews, ligaments and tendons. It is also not about how many reps we can push as in building muscles, rather the movements should connect with karate techniques. It also assists with joint lock techniques and throws eg. shionage.

      All of this is so valuable, and hoju undo should be moving meditation, practicing mindfulness (mushin no mushin) and being fully present in our bodies, which we're not always able to do. Chishi is a wonderful way to reinvigorate our muscles and understanding.

    Wonderful instruction video, Sensei Che. The Chiishi exercises are more difficult when done slowly, as one cannot rely on the momentum of the swinging mass to carry one through the last bit of the action, hence all the stress would be on one's forearm and wrist and other joints and muscles. We can see how Sensei Che slows down on the last bit of each motion as he breathes out. We can also apply Kime at the last instance of each motion if one really want to push oneself, some people will also perform this exercise with dynamic tension. It's a full program to introduce this equipment, and how each action or motion trains a part of our body to improve a specific set of karate techniques, looking forward to when Sensei Che and Zoe produce these videos.

      Ah, thank you so much for this lovely comment, and for your insight into the hidden value (and challenges) in chishi!
      We've done three basics videos now in chishi, hopefully we'll do some advanced chishi work sooner rather than later.
      Personally, the more chishi I do, the more I love it, and by itself it is a comprehensive conditioning tool. I'm still on a 6lb chishi, but one day I hope to also be on an 11lb chishi!

      @@GojuRyuKarateCentre, Yes, I'm always on the lookout for this set, too. It's always good to have a backup of important out-of-print books like this. I suppose one could scan the collection and preserve it as a PDF. However, it's not the same as physical books. How awesome would it be if Higaonna Sensei released the second edition of those books? Imagine a full-colour, hardbound, revised set with additional content such as selected essays and biographies? I'd add this to my library in a heartbeat! I would also really love to get a copy of some of Sensei Chinen's works, but these are next to impossible to find, even if budget wasn't an issue.

      That set would be amazing! Maybe he will start it and it will be his tombstone book, like Sensei Chinen's book. He also has an army of people now to carry the heavy lifting of filming the kata, the editing etc.
      PDF is no way to read - nothing like a proper book to get involved and invested.
      We only got the two Chinen books because one of his students happened to be passing through - other than that, I can't imagine us finding them. I wish they had been published through Tuttle so that they don't go out of print, and were more widely available.

I have trained in Shotokan and other arts that teach limited to no hojo undo. I have Mr Clarke's book and have been making my own hojo undo equipment.       Always lovely to hear from you, Selwyn! Homemade chishi are the best, it reminds me of that phrase: "chop your own wood, and it will warm you twice." I can do chishi for hours, it gets incredibly meditative after a while. Love it!

    great instructional video! I was wondering, what is the purpose of the movement when thrusting to the back between the legs? Just to strengthen the back or is there a karate movement that corresponds to that?

      Great question! Largely it is to strengthen the lower back and legs, as well as work on hip flexibility, but there could be an application similar to the drop in Kururunfa, or maybe maybe cranking someone's arm while sitting on their back/shoulder?

      Hello,
      Our short ones are 30cm (1 foot) and the long ones are 45cm (1.5 ft) - the long ones are better for serious practitioners. Our short handles help our new and young students handle the chishi without it getting too unwieldy because they are gripping at the end of a long handle.

    May I add my 2 cents adjusted for inflation? And with no references to some message written in fire in letters thirty feet high on the far side of the Quentulus Quazgar Mountains in the land of Sevorbeupstry on the planet of Preliumtarn, which orbits the star Zarss, which is located in the Grey Binding Fiefdoms of Saxaquine.
    It's been the hardest exercise I've ever seen. Because the chiishi was too small... :)
    Let me explain. There are two ways of doing it: Go (hard way which is the easiest to do although hard physically, nevermind it) and Ju (soft which requires "listening" to the device). When one does chiishi in a Go way, he or she does it physically with strength. And that's OK, especially for beginners because they need to build their muscles to perform. Then the Ju comes into a play when the chiishi is used as it was intended to be used (not to smack on the head, by the way) because it starts to correct ones posture (structure or gamaku, or whatever you call it in your language of tulip planters on diamond soil).
    Now, this time one must not fight the weight of the chiishi but try to follow the inertia while doing all the movements without any effort (told you, it's hard to do with a small and light chiishi). So, for example, when you pull the chiishi up, it goes up by initial inertia and you drop your body down, twist your wrist 180 degrees and sit below its shaft in shiko-dachi stopping it upright (heh, you've got it - and look, it's a structure of tsuki!). Then you let the chiishi fall outside while rising and... here we've got the uke in its proper structure as helped by the weight of chiishi, right? And so on and on with other exercises that could be a book written on the subject, but it's been written and what do I know then?
    And for hiki-uke part, I would put a shaft just above the solar plexus and fix its end there with one hand while I'd put another's wrist under the shaft with a palm facing up and then would make that hiki-uke while also turning the palm. In this case you not only train the form but also make the wrist less reactive to some pain when blocking (some kind of kote-kitae practice). YMMV, of course (this comment is already too long and it's Friday and it's a shame we have that bat-eaters shit floating all around us and with no message from the Fujian or whatever jian).

      All of this is most wise and valuable (and entertaining, as usual - have never thought of Afrikaans as tulip planters on diamond soil, but that's exactly what it is)
      The only reason we were using the small chishi was so that Ché could finish the video without coughing his lungs out. (Luckily, doctor cleared him of anything serious this afternoon.)
      There's definitely a video worth doing on the ju aspect, of learning to work with the chishi instead of against it. Maybe soon, maybe we'll do it in a little while, but we will always look forward to your comment underneath the video 👏🏻
