Finally the day has come! 🤤 I was waiting for the Plex ever since Dave talked about it the first time a year ago or so. Directly ordered one today. Can't wait to get it! Also this is exactly the video I hoped to see today! Such a great sound and playing, Leon!
Unbelievable improvement having 2 inputs 'internally jumpered' & being able to turn down an input to unjumper. That's like moving the "jumpers for goalposts" as we say in the UK!
You can turn down inputs to disable a channel on a jumpered vintage Marshall too. Saves you some visual clutter and idiosyncracy but it’s not a big deal. Switchable bright caps is basic too, but it’s nice!
Respectfully, that feature and the switchable bright caps have been done before. What distinguishes this amp are its master volume control's implementation and its overall build quality.
If that amp were a person, someone would be suggesting an anger management class. And the amp would just sneer at them. Got the attitude of a Plexi and then some. Marvelous.
Wow, you played almost all the classic rock Marshall sounds with it, excellent work! Kudos for playing "Ain't No Love In The Heart Of The City"! And, for me, the most usable feature apart from the bright switches, is the M.V.C. control that sounds good when you turn it down (even cooler on 2, as you showed) so you can tame it unlike real Marshall amps! Greetings from Greece!
Finally someone who understands how to demo a master volume control (level matched)! Only thing missing was an indication of how many decibels the volume was reduced at the various settings. Pretty impressive master volume for a Plexi-style amp. Some loss of bass at the lower settings, but overall really good consistency.
how does this compare to small box ? and since you are fresh off the road with yngwie … could this amp nail the early alcatrazz / steeler and early solo albums ? along with evh schenker lynch tones
If I had a criticism for Friedman Amps. I'd like to see them come up with better designs. Tolex, Grill Plate...cosmetics. They aren't Marshall, so stand out in a different way. It sounds awesome like all the Friedman Amps.
Dave has addressed this before. They are (for now) all modified Marshalls so the look is intentional. If you order direct you can get any amp customized though.
Yeah, I had a pink taco, tried it thru many different kinds of speakers, and just couldn't get that " no one like you" clean, smooth, soaring tone. I also have a fractal fm3, but now only use it for the effects...the models are nice, but any IRs I've tried or bought to use, all have to this newly heard (yuk), fizz...to be fair, maybe this new Friedman plexi should never be reviewed via IR speaker/s....plus the overtones r missing,..it's like we r building an army of IR earsets...I can't unhear the thing I don't like about IR speaker simulation....40yrs ago, we all had real soaring solos...it doesn't matter how much EQ is applied, IR suck lol@@thegreatriffs2552
That’s the Friedman sound. All the builders have their own concept of what a Marshall should sound like. Dave has his concept, John Suhr has his, George Metropoulos has his, Rick St. Pierre (Wizard) has his, etc. A lot of that is because vintage Marshalls are so inconsistent. Some are more “fizzy”, some breakup early, some are glassier and cleaner, some are tighter and more focused. Dave’s main reference amp (a ‘68 Super Lead 50, if I’m not mistaken) is obviously of the more fizzy and compressed variety.
Hey dude was great to see you and Ragdoll at the Malmsteen gig! Said hello out the front, you are a true gentlemen and a fucking tasty guitar player! My non muso friend was really impressed with you guys and your singer in particular, a good set of pipes indeed. Was an honour to witness your stank face game in person! ps You guys were better than Malmsteen, his solos were too long and yours were too short 😉 but I suppose that was to be expected. Would have loved if he had just played Rising force properly from start to finish. Great night though thanks for everything ❤🔥🙏
@@lordgraga I used to own the suhr sl68, and i feel like from the 3 videos so far that the plex has a hair or two more gain than the suhr, but it could very well be my ears tricking me. i used to own a friedman be50 deluxe and it was a great one too, i plan to get the new updated sl68 suhr, but may also get this plex too eventually. looking forward to hearing both john suhr and dave friedman both hopefully make a statement on if they feel these two amps have any real tone differences to make it worth owning both.
Just my 2 cents: Had a Suhr Sl 68 which I purchased after comparing it directly to a Friedman Small Box 50… the Friedmann sounded congested in the mids and almost dark. Then ( some years later) I finally got the chance to buy an original JMP from 1972… which outperformed the Suhr ! I personally believe that it‘s almost impossible to get this pure rawness, string separation and top end from any modern amp… you can play Hendrix stuff on the neck pickup of an Les Paul without a problem… I guess this new Friedmann would sound polished in comparison…
@gwhiz3708 new models. I remember when they use to release a new top of the range amp every 5 years. The JVM410 hasn't been updated since it was released in 2008.
@@steelwarrior105 The MV on the Plex is just a regular PPIMV nothing special. So you’ll need an attenuator on that too. Friedman uses it on his demo clips. The bright cap is an easy fix. The Variac won’t make a huge difference anyway.
If I played humbuckers, tone life would be sooooo damn easy! Any Marshall style crunch sounds so similiar that I can get the same and probably better tones with a $450 Marshall Origin 50 watter. Yet, with strats it’s a whole world of hurt and disappointment with buying and selling over 100 amps in my time so far. Your Strat tones are usually great through any amp but that sounded no good. I have never thought this way or commented, yet all the searching for tone with humbuckers is just a waste of time. I could make any amp sold at a store rock and be toneful. In essence, count yourself fortunate all you humbucker nerds🤣👏
Wow…you are dedicated - what’s your closest so far? I’m working on an old school modded PA amp (adding FX Loop) that I think would fit the bill for you…if you could find something like that - even though a bit “off the beaten track”? The Guitologist did a repair on something like that a while back - sounded amazing.
Seems like the amp just wants to goooo. Do the gainy things. From 68 Plexi replica, Im expecting also the lower gain, edge of brakeup thing, that Im used to from vintage Marshalls. This amps seems unhappy in that place and just wants to do moooore. But great at the hardrock, early metal and Van Halen thing.
It is "almost" a Ceriatone Molecular with a Variac onboard. For half the price, you can get a Molecular and a Variac and have way more tones including all the tones this amp provides.
I think Marshall are perfectly happy making fridges and Bluetooth speakers 😀
Epic tones! Well done Leon and Dave
Lol!
The world is crazy but Friedman release this glorious amp and for a minute, all is well.
Totally. It's makes all the bad things go away😅
Buy mine if u think it's great
Can't stand when these guys use any effects extra eqing anything extra.

Excellent Jimmy hill fast show reference... nice..
I like the 4 inputs, on the sv20h anyway only one I've owned. More options.

Congrats on 100K subs Leon. 👍👍🍺
Cheers!
This amp sounds absolutely perfect!
So inspiring to play.
You sound killer through this!
I think it’s the best version of a Plexi out there. Great playing and tones man
My PLEX arrived last week and plugged in a Les Paul and it was instantly that late 60s sound I was hoping it would deliver. My new fav amp!
Best review I've seen yet of this new Dave Friedman Plexi. It's a great sounding amp no doubt. Killer playing too, Leon!
🙌
Nice Leon... We always love a good plexi played the way it deserves !
Regardless whether you dig this sound, it's hard to argue that Dave made anything other than the *definitive* version of it!
If that amp were a person, someone would be suggesting an anger management class. And the amp would just sneer at them. Got the attitude of a Plexi and then some. Marvelous.
Suhr and Friedman have some good stuff, but David Bray is still the MAN when it comes to making a 1959/1987 circuit really shine 🤘
Pretty sweet amp, also congrats on 100k!
Thanks mate!
Sounds stupid good. Like it doesn't have a bad angle.
You are a legend, Leon. One of the best players on here who just makes any amp sing!!!!
Too kind!
Well put in the title man . That amp sounds awesome. Thank you Dave!
LOVE the title of this video because the statement is so true. Marshall is now a lifestyle brand first and they make no bones about it.
'Tis but a proud and noble thing...'nuff said.
So nice to hear a little Robin Trower!

Awesome demo of this great amp !
All the friedmans I’ve played felt like strangely compressed, anybody else notice that?
Finally someone who understands how to demo a master volume control (level matched)! Only thing missing was an indication of how many decibels the volume was reduced at the various settings.
Pretty impressive master volume for a Plexi-style amp. Some loss of bass at the lower settings, but overall really good consistency.
I appreciate that!!!
This thing is a BEAST. Hard time getting it to clean up though.
How do you find it compared to marshall sv20h?
You look so happy playing through that amp Leon!
It's a beast! That Plexi gorgeous -ness, but with extra scalpting....bloody awesome.
What cool amps. He knows Amps , pedals and guitars for sure. ❤
Very cool my friend. Always great demos from you and this channel . ❤❤
Be well sir! ❤❤
I'm wanting to get a modern plexi and I'm torn between this and the new Suhr SL67 Mk II
Was just thinking the same thing! Would love to hear them side-by-side.
It sounds a bit like Alex Lifeson's Marshall on the first Rush album.
Australian-Scottish riffs => Perfect !
Californian striped riffs => Perfect !
Irish Greeny riffs => Perfect !
London Creamy riffs => Perfect !
This amp can do everything legendary Marshalls did !!!
With the volume on 10, this amp sounds really good.
Sounds fantastic!
how does this compare to small box ? and since you are fresh off the road with yngwie … could this amp nail the early alcatrazz / steeler and early solo albums ? along with evh schenker lynch tones
I think Dave perfected analog amp captures. I can’t wait to get mine! Congrats on the 100k subs!!!🤘🎩
Wow, this amp sounds amazing!
It does!
Instantly hit the like button when I heard you playing Armed and Ready 😅
I always use Armed and Ready to test an amp!
This is the way
EXCELLENT...What a great amp!
why not put an effects loop though?
Man that one pissed off amp. Love it
I love the old Whitesnake riff. Snakebite was one of my favorites.
I really dont understand why Marshall doesn't make something like this. Baffled.
What riff at the beginning i just cant get a name on it....❤
Sounds awesome! With Both guitars. I need an effects loop though, but I guess for a wet dry this would be awesome for a dry sound!
LOL I already HAVE a smallbox.

They are all Marshall. They embrace it
Totally agree.
Looks like A Friedman. Case closed
Who cares about Marshall, no one is waiting on them😊
...and Leon did the manly thing here by not plugging a drive pedal into it!
What took the world so long to make this amp: a Plexi with a MV?
Only real ones demo a great amp with that Riff Raff riff!!! My favorite ACDC song!!
Mine too!
How do you like the master? Dave says its a new design. Looking for some feedback. Thanks
Killer amp. Wonder how it sounds with a proper boost.
There was total audio silence for a few minutes in the middle of this, not sure why?
Bringin the Schenker as usual! Amp sounds amazing….
Waiting for that 'Heaven Above' riff to hit and God does it deliver through this beast!
What kind of speakers are you playing through. Imho, Plexi and Modded Plexi Amps really shine, being played through UK Made Greenback Speakers, imho.
Awesome demo Leon! Long time no see! This would be Friedman's 'Vintage Modern'!
what speakers were you using?
Lovely sounds Leon - what would be a good starting point for getting this tone in Fractal land? Also, congrats on 100k!
that sounds fantastic ! obviously more gain but hows it compare to the SV and JTM ?
Nice video ! what's the name of the riff at 16.47 (the first riff with Peavey) ? Thanks
Always a good channel - clear presentation and superb playing - might add I love that fuzzy after taste this amp has - 😅
Jeeezzz - that sounds good in many different ways
Absolutely badass.
Crushing hey!
Friedman amps....every bit as gnarly as the price tags.
Why is the power light flashing? No other videos show that happening. Maybe something came loose during shipping.
The camera frame rate
Good Lord this thing sounds great.
which speakers do you use with this amp
Fantastic!!!
Ohhh Goood I need that amp!! ;) Superb video :)
Did I hear live and learn from Sonic in there? 🤘🏻 awesome playing as always, Leon!
Compared to a 6CA7 ? Hmm curious 🤘
SC245 sounded sick through that amp. Jeeeeez
Please, Leon. Compare this to the Marshall plexi 20 head!
Just wondering if it’s worth a $1000 more for this over the 1987x since the recent Marshall price drop. $2799 is a chunk of change
I’d say yes!
How does it compare to Marshall 1987x?
1987x lacks the variac mode, master and bright switch options
Ridiculous 😂 great job man sounds sick !!
whats the delay you added at the end? a plugin or a pedal?
Plugin, Fabfilter Timeless
Would love to hear you, Chappers and Danish Pete do some jammin’….call Andertons now
it's always have a fizz to their sound
I noticed that fizz on my Friedman BE 100 Deluxe, and you can not dial it out.

Maybe it’s my ears but it’s kind of a mix between the tone of a plexi and a jcm900.
Che bestia suono mondiale 💯🎸💪🏻😊
How does this sound different to you then say the Suhr SL-67 which is also a plexi 50 watt?
I don’t know, but I’ll be trying it soon!
I’m curious too. Suhr is better built as far as I know.
