The big thing in understanding where Stede's mind is at is in his confrontation with Chauncey. When Badminton tells him that he ruins lives and destroys everything he touches, Stede agrees - he genuinely believes that he has not only failed his family (which has haunted him all season), but has also managed to turn the legendary Blackbeard into a beardless prisoner (even though that was Blackbeard's choice and he never liked the legend anyway). By leaving Ed and returning to his family, he's trying to fix two messes he thinks he has caused in one fell swoop - not to mention that he looked absolutely traumatised when another Badminton twin shot himself right in front of him. Should he have gone to Ed and talked it through as a crew? Yes. But does it make sense that he would freak out, blame himself for everything, and make a decision like this? I think it does.

I've seen people go absolutely out of hand with rage against Stede in this scene - completely disregarding that he's basically in an active trauma state while this is going on. It's like if you're on your way to a date and someone jumps in front of your car and dies, except that it's not even the first time it's happened and in addition you're pretty certain that it's proof that you'll destroy your date as well if you show up. So you don't call and they're left at the restaurant by themselves.
Like yeah, would have been better if you'd called, but also it was an actual emergency so maybe give a bit of leeway.
And of course, Blackbeard doesn't have any of that context at this point. All he knows is that Stede didn't show up
Yes! I still hate that he does it (or at least does it without checking in with Ed first) but I absolutely understand WHY he does it. To have Chauncey there calling out all his fears and worries he’s been struggling with (all season, but especially in this episode with Ed voluntarily turning himself in and everything that entails) just confirms for him that he was no good and Ed/Blackbeard would be better off without him. 💔
He was devastated that Ed had to shave his beard. Like, did people miss when he left the bunk and was clearly upset?
In the same way that the kraken is a metaphor for how Ed sees himself, the lighthouse is a metaphor for how
Stede sees himself.
“Technically you’re supposed to avoid lighthouses so you don’t crack up on the rocks”
Stede thinks he will destroy Ed if Ed gets too close, so that’s why he runs away.
The secret to Stede is that he is extremely self-hating. He agrees with Chauncey that all he does is ruin things. He thinks he ruined his family by leaving and he thinks he ruined Blackbeard by getting him arrested. So he goes home hoping to fix both things. (Also subtextually, he thinks he ruined Blackbeard by making him gay essentially. Which obviously he already was gay lol, but being deeply closeted and still hated for being so obviously queer was Stede's whole life experience until he went away to sea, so.)
When it comes to Blackbeard’s queerness, there’s something g to be said about how it was acceptable for him to have sex with men, but not to act effeminate or “stereotypically” gay (like Stede). He couldn’t be vulnerable, or have close & intimate romantic relationships.
He always had to uphold being the model of masculinity, which means that he couldn’t be any of the things I listed above.

And Stede being the first person he ever connected with that way, with that trust and vulnerability, and that making him more willing to be soft and silly and emotionally open is something Stede is wrongly convinced has ruined him by making him more like Stede. Of course, what's actually happened is that Stede has both inspired and made Ed feel safe to be more like the Ed that he's always had to mask or believed he could never be.

No queerbaiting on this show!!! To quote Lucius from the treasure map episode, "oh my god, it's really happening." But then Stede gives into self-blame and self-doubt, as well as his guilt and sense of responsibility for leaving his family. Sigh.
iirc the cast n crew were surprised at how shocked people were when stede n ed kissed, because they felt they'd made it really obvious that the show was going in that direction - they clearly underestimated how scorned we all are from queerbaiting and fake-outs in almost every other show, lmao.
Didn't David mention he'd never realized queerbaiting was a thing or something along those lines? That's why he was so surprised we all flipped out over the kiss so much 😅
Stede really thinks he ruined Ed, he doesn't understand that Ed is finally free to be his true self and not just Blackbeard, Stede believe what Badmington tells him about "define beautiful things". That's why he goes away, leave Ed and come home, he really believe he is saving Edward and doing the right thing to his wife.

Yeah that's why I completely disagreed with them about the beard shaving being metaphorically going back into the closet!
If anything it was the complete opposite!
All the Blackbeard stuff kind of was a closet of his own making for Ed. Yes, obviously, it wasn't literally about sexuality since he'd hooked up with Calico Jack, and whoever else as, Blackbeard, but more metaphorical.
He had to maintain the Blackbeard persona. There have been several times over the season when Ed talked about it. Especially, in episode 4 when he was telling Stede "you wanted to be Blackbeard, this is what it's like to be Blackbeard!" and then in episode 6 when he reveals just how much of himself he's hidden from everyone.
And then we all know what happens after this episode that just backs up that his entire identity is so dissociated, that it's almost borderline DID.
For a while in this episode he was just himself, rather than Blackbeard or the Kraken, for the first time in probably decades.

There's something tragically real about the way that Stede kissed a man, clearly enjoyed it, and then immediately panicked and fled straight back into the closet. A lifetime of repression and self-hatred that is so deep-seated he didn't even realise he was gay.
I think also his father abused him so much that Stede didn’t know what love is as Mary didn’t love him either and they were forced into marriage. So Ed is probably the first person he has had real feelings for and it probably scared him. But also Stede has always felt awful for leaving his family and after Chauncey tormented him and nearly killed him that likely broke his spirit.
I especially love how the kiss was handled completely romantic and serious by the show, not making any jokes :D :D And I love your reation to it even more!

I think Stede is just so full of guilt at this point that he freaks out and runs. the fact that he feels he is now responsible for 2 deaths AND abandoning his family is just too much for him. not to mention that he also sorta believes what Izzy said about destroying the most powerful pirate in the world; yeah Stede is going *through* it.
anyway, I LOVED your reaction to the kiss! was so excited myself that they went for it and made it super clear that it’s a romantic connection and not just hinted at it. and that moment was just so sweet and tender 😍😍😍
I think the key line that explains why stede went back is: you defile beautiful things!

I kind of prefer how he looks without the beard, but whatever makes him happy.
Stede running away absolutely drives me nuts. But it also feels really human and believable. Not all of us are ready to accept love when it comes to us.

ASWT, please do that next (I read somewhere that you were planning on doing Bad Buddy next, so I watched it, and I have to say that it was tedious and tepid in comparison with all the other shows you have been doing recently, not to mention the commercial product placements throughout the show that get really annoying).

I had been waiting for this the entire weeeeeekkkkkk I'm so happy you kept watching!! Stede is absolutely going through it atm, and Ed is just heartbroken AF and I was dying when I watched this episode! Ed wanted to be more than Blackbeard as he explained in ep 4, so that's why being caught felt like retirement and freedom for him
Also, I'm super Into our flag means death cause it's one of the few tv shows catered to older queers, it's not just your typical teenage love story in high school (which is great too) but we older people needed something more. Just like this.

Btw if you listen carefully the music that plays during the kiss (Gnossienne N.5 by Eric Satie) is used in all of Ed and Stede's significant moments, even back in ep 4, so every time I hear it I melt.
On a different note, I was so incredibly pissed at Stede when I first watched this, I wanted to tear his hair out. I've since realized he did, after all, just experience a huge trauma and if anything he might even have been in shock or something.

TBH I think I hate Izzy Hands exactly as much as I love Con O'Neill (the actor who plays him) - and that's a lot.
I've heard people say that the real life Izzy Hands would have only been ~16 at this point in history, so I like to imagine that's why he's such a dick
One of the things I love so much about this show is that they just got the actors they wanted for the roles regardless of silly things like “factual age”. This you get a 56 year old playing a teenager and a 55 year old Leslie Jones playing twenties Spanish Jackie.

I almost stopped watching when this was coming out because I was so afraid Blackbeard x Stede was going to be queerbait. When someone said it wasn't, I resumed the show. I would've marched on HBO MAX headquarters if they hadn't renewed it.
Stede knowing, definitively, that he doesn't want to die when during the pilot, his answer to the question "Do you want to live?" was "I don't know! I think so?" is growth. But he hasn't grown yet to the point where he can say "I find you incredibly attractive and want to be around you all the time, but I'm scared to move around the world to a place where I don't speak the language and don't know anyone other than you." Which would be a fair thing to say, I think! (While I think Stede was likely dissociating when he walked all the way to Bridgetown barefoot after Chauncey died, he was already feeling swamped by guilt about leaving his family before Ed asked him to run away. Learning he'd been legally declared dead seems to have messed him up. Maybe Chauncey attempting to kill him and then dying made it less possible for him to say to Ed, "I really want to tie up a couple of loose ends before we go, would that be okay?")

I think the whole point is that Stede would have died if not for Ed, because Stede last order before Ed showed up was to open fire on the British fleet. If they had done that they would be all dead by cannon fire or dead anyway if they somehow survived the battle.

Slow burn is always hit or miss for me, but I think the team did a really good job with Stede and Ed. It was definitely worth the wait seeing them together. This was a great commentary as always!
