3 years ago the Pats gave him $12.5 million per year. The Fins are now paying him $4.2 million per year coming off his best statistical season- in his prime.
Happy for a fellow FIU panther. Never got to play with since I'm much older but finally Miami brings a panther home. Should've drafted TY back when he came out but good to see a panther continue his career!
I like him but I don't think he comes cheap. Pats gave him a 4 year 50 mil contract then, I guess, he got traded to the Falcons and he played on like 8.5 mil last year then released by Falcons after having about his best season. I don't see where we sign him for anything less than 7 mil. We should have other priorities than putting an expensive 4th TE on the roster after Smythe, Hill and Conner. Maybe they will make more moves to shut me up. lol Hopefully soon.
I like this move too with how limited our picks are in the draft. I wasn't really sold on Jatavian from Texas, and it seemed like he might be too hard to pass up in the 2nd round...now we can focus that pick on the Center from West Virginia, Cooper Beebe, or whoever is the best DT available(if we don't cover that in the first round because all of the OL get taken before our pick)
LB and DL. Cam Smith was drafted last year to play. Miami don't really play DE but rather edge/OLBs but they are injured so they need place holders to play half a season
Ryder, as always, great breakdown. The pros: our opponents will have to respect the TE position, which they did not last year. He is athletic and he can get those extra yards. He will help us in short yardage situations whether running or passing, especially in the endzone. The cons: if he is not Tua's 1st read, he may not be effective in the the passing game. The other QB was making plays with his legs and finding Smith open. That is not really a strength of Tua. Ultimately, if we can give defenses something to think about, our passing game will be more effective. I love Durham Smythe, but he is an upgrade.
Your point about Smith's receiving productivity coming into question if he is not Tua's first read is really a microcosm of Tua's and coach McDaniel's limitations right now. During the first half of last year, Tua was smoking defenses with quick first read passing to his speed demons out wide. For the most part the team we were playing then couldn't keep up and we soon enough took over the AFC East. Then the second half of the year the 'snap and rip' offense struggled when we faced the better teams. Far too often, Tua looked lost, as if he just found a wallet on the ground and is looking around to see if the owner is present! What the team needs to do is first stay healthy. Last year our OL regs (Armstead, Wynn, Williams, Hunt and Jackson) only played 58% of the time (this includes miss starts by these players and a rough estimate of lost in-game time due to injury departures). Contrast that with Buffalo who's five starters started the entire year! Had that margin been much closer, no way Buffalo takes the division from us last year. The second thing that needs to happen is for McDaniel to put in some plays that don't call for a quick primary strike. Tua needs to hold onto the ball longer a lot more of the time when facing better team defenses. Certainly OL health will be a huge help towards this happening but Tua and McD need to embrace this. I don't want Tua / McD worrying about Tua getting hurt or even sustaining more concussions to the point that it is interfering with his focus. You simply can't play the game that way. If that concern is too daunting for them to change then Tua should be looking for another career. Harsh but unequivocal truth. But if we become more dynamic in our passing game this way and stay healthy, Tua will have the confidence and afforded time to connect more with second, third and more reads.
I'm okay with him as backup. But we need a big time starter at TE. We have to stop accepting mediocrity at TE position. Draft a TE. Sanders Sinott or Johnson.
@@douglasanderson5516 that's what you guys get wrong. You blame Tua for a system that's set up by coaches. It's based on a line that lacks physicality. But somehow it all comes back to Tua. Hill ceiling is maybe a#2 TE. We have to stop accepting mediocrity. We need to start go big or go home.
I think its still a possibility but the only reason I'm not feeling that is because of the limited draft picks. I feel like the sweet spot is the 3-4 rounds for TE, so unless the fins trade back my guess is they don't take a TE.
Possibly he will turn injury prone if he is not already so. It would have made much more Miami sense for the team to have taken him if he was already injury reputed. If he wasn't injury prone to begin with and "refuses" to succumb then he likely won't make the squad. Mark it down under the "Strange but True" heading of life in general and the "Par for the Course" one of the Miami Dolphins.
Smythe is a capable though unspectacular all around TE. Hill is a bit raw still, particularly in the receiving game but his blocking potential is through the roof IMO. I think he is greatly underestimated by the narrator in this video (who otherwise makes a credible presentation). Coach McDaniel actually seems to be like an old school type coach compared to the new wave trend when it comes to TEs. Most teams have re-defined the role of TE as an inline receiver and occasional chip blocker. Mike Gesicki, was this mold of TE with great receiving numbers yet could not win a consistent role with the team due to poor blocking. His near $10M contract wasn't going to be renewed as a part time player and thus he was not re-signed. Hopefully Jonnu Smith gets more of a role. He appears to be an upgrade in blocking. If he's got the hands Gesicki had to go along with his own faster speed, he could make a real impact on the short middle field as defenses have to cover a ridiculous combination of Hill, Waddle and OBJ!

Like the film, definitely an asset...
I don't believe he is a very good blocker and that is what we need
He actually blocks great

5 mil a season so we got him to come home cheap
Great break down

BTW, Thank you again and again for what you do!
I really like this pickup, he led the his league in YAC 🎉for TE's that's 💯 his size will help a already explosive offense! FinsUp
About time we get a good TE.now we need a CB and LB and DE and OL lol

@@joeblog2672 right on
i cant believe you actually took the time to do this
But you took the time to watch it 😢
They should guve him all the screen plays INSTEAD OF TYREEK , JONNU BREAKS ALL THE TACKLES

Sanders can't block. I hear just as bad as Gesicki. I like Sinott, Johnson and Holker.
@@MichaelSmith-uu2swdon't agree with Sanders assessment. But would take Sinott or Johnson over Smith.
I like Hill a lot. We just need a QB who can hold the ball longer than 1 second and scan the entire field and make his reads.

There is not enough money for a big-time tight end.
Even though we picked him up, I still think we draft a TE. Then drop Hill to make room for the drafted TE

Get him Coach MCD
I always have to ask
Is he injury prone ?
If not he will once he joins the Dolphins!😮

Ive never seen smythe or hill do this. So at worst, its an huge improvement. Id like to see him at more run blocking

great work fam!! question is there any film on Janu smith blocking. is willing at least, what type of effort you see?. thx
YAC guys are what you need with a wobble long-ball thrower of a QB.
What are the Fook are you talking about?
Ryder you da man!
He'll come to Miami, get hurt for most (Hellkite --- all?) of the season --- but he'll rehab in the best facilities in the NFL. Then he'll disappear.
You feeling that will fuller and Byron jones effect 😂
🤦🏾♂️ who says Tua will use the TE haven’t used the TE in all most 2 years

Durham smythe is also as good and was open all the time the problem is mcdummy only throws to tyreek
Give Tanner Conner a real shot he is timed at 4.3 40yd could develop in a real weapon but mcdummy never uses his real talents
