"it's fun but it's not fun"
It's that fine line we walk between pushing the car outside to burn it to the ground out of frustration and taking a deep breath, regrouping and completing the job for that warm toasty sense of accomplishment you just can't get from a car fire.

Trevor's Mailbox God I had so many of those moments when trying to get my car running. It quit on me one day out of nowhere and took me 18 months for me to figure it out. Had the car to the dealer, consulted multiple specialists. NOTHING was working. It doesn’t take a lot for an engine to run. Fuel Air Spark Compression. But man where there moments where I was losing my mind. But the pay off of finally finding the issue, knowing all the key components are new and functioning, and turning that key hearing the engine catch and start like there was never a problem, greatest payoff ever. Better yet I was the one who fixed it. Not some guy telling me I’m a punk kid screwing with a car no one wants that isn’t worth the money to fix it.

The best advice I can offer anyone, WALK AWAY & BREATH. We all get frustrated no matter how many times we've done something there's ALWAYS that one time it screws up. There's a legit reason behind the myth most mechanics smoked.

Gasket material is a great topic to learn.
Most people don't know they can buy a sheet and make a gasket if they can't find one or don't want to buy a whole kit to get the one they need.
There is paper, nicer paper, cork, fiber, rubber of different grades, graphite, steel, copper, aluminum, RTV and more, with different sealers you can apply.
I learned with a couple engine projects and some high tech plumbing. There is a lot of good info in a McMaster Carr catalog but you also have to put your hands on it.
Once you have the knowledge you can tell if the gaskets you've got are good or garbage.
One more thing to think about is when you are racing to compress those valve springs, that's when you need to be especially careful not to cross thread.

when I was a younger man I worked in an engine shop and we used a product called hi-tack gasket sealer. It worked very well. it held the gasket in place and stayed somewhat flexible but still sealed very well under pressure. we never had a comeback for a leak after we started using it.

  • @lyfandeth

Casey, around 1970 Permatex came out with Form-a-Gasket. Mechanics said it was junk. Permatex found out the greasemonkeys weren't reading the instructions. Weren't cleaning or allowing cure time. So they built an Indy car (IIRC) with no other gasket materials in it, and after the car finished and finished well, shops got interested in just what the stuff was, AND how to use it.

To be honest, I’m not even that into cars and rarely do my own work. Watching your channels are inspiring me to apply it to something else. I just need to find out what that passion is.

perhaps I have read the question wrong, but I find (for the business and technical side of youtube and understanding the deeper aspects of such) it is hard to beat Roberto Blake's videos if you have time to watch them - I do not know, however, if he has any specifically on notification principles. I am rambling again...

    • @thatrealba
      @thatrealba 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The notifications thing for subscribers isn't something YOU can change. It's a TH-cam problem.
You can remind people to subscribe, click the notification bell, and like and share the video.
As far as expanding the channel quickly, one way to do it is to use clickbait titles, and use all caps in titles. The clickbait thing is pretty divisive though.
One nearly universal thing I have heard from creators is to keep putting out regular content and the growth will come organically.
At some point you may have a video catch and hit trending, and you should see some explosive growth then.

It was attached with black rtv from Dodge. The book showed putting a dab in the spot where the time chain cover attached. The gasket was to install without the rtv which I was like hell yeah. Cleaned the bottom of the motor getting it really nice no damage super clean used the gasket it leaked... used RTV no leaks... that copper stuff is really cool. In addition to Casey's comment, if you learn about threads you can have a good educated guess to proper torque values.
I think the book I have on that is called Screw to Win.
Feel is very important when you are dealing with old aluminum.
If you have rusty steel, clean it up first.
Chase threads if they are dirty.

Are you not supposed to put a coat of oil on that gasket? Seems to me if you did that, a few drips wouldn't be an issue because any excess oil would just ooze out when you torque it down, and you'd still have a nice uniform oily surface.

What I like about this, is that it shows that even professionals struggle at times.
No matter what, things will get hard no matter who u are.
Stay in the fight and don't give up. That's what make things worth it, the hard work and effort u put into something. Then u can appreciate what achieved cuz of what it took to get there.
Bravo Casey, thanks for the vid and showing us what happens in the real world. It seems these days, in our microwave society, too much emphasis is placed on instant gratification, which is fleeting and unfulfilling.

The oil pump is not keyed to the crankshaft, it is driven by pressure from that large crank bolt torqued to 155ft/lb. You didn't use a flywheel lock to remove it, can't wait to see how you are going to torque it down without it (last bolt on my build to do and don't really want to buy the lock!)
Thank you for understanding that people, at least me, want to see REAL LIFE, not some highly polished tv show unrealistically portraying what it takes. If I wanted to watch fantasy I would watch tv, not YT.

So true with the certs for mechanics. I busted my but getting ASE certified studying and paying to take tests but really most shops could care less if you have your ASE other than it shows you have at least a base knowledge. I've seen high school dropouts with no formal education that could to an engine swap in a day with no help and I have seen guys who have gone to tech school and gotten Master Tech certs and struggle to do a head job. As a mechanic there is no substitute for learning by doing and by helping out guys that have been working on cars a lot longer than you and gaining their knowledge. I tell any aspiring mechanic to find an entry level job at a privet local shop doing oil changes as a lube tech or hell even just cleaning up the shop and then volunteer to help out on bigger jobs and learn how to fix suspension, engine, electrical. I do like programs like UTI as you get a lot more hands on there but now a days those programs are insanely expensive, as much if not more than some 4 year colleges.

It's a Porsche. You set the cam in Place, and two men and two boys with four tork spanners set the bolts in ten seconds or less.

Hey Casey, I noticed that your power steering reservoir/filter is gone. Does your 944 not have power steering?

    • @CaseyPutsch

      No power steering! :) yep...

@@CaseyPutsch thanks for the reply! Is the power steering pump deleted as well or just plugged? Curious as I've got a leaky unit on my '86 and have though about just deleting it all.

I wouldn’t. My 92 talon came with the pump and reservoir removed and I can tell u if u try any spirited driving u can’t keep up with the car and the steering and u will loose it. It’s fine if u drive highway all the time and never really need it. I really want the system back on my car cause I can’t rally it or anything on a back road with the steering being so slow. I’m no body builder that can whip the steering around as fast as a normal human with power steering.

Should i buy a used 944 1987 for 6k thats in great condition? I am not as good as you when it comes to mechanics. If i mess up no one is around to help me fix my error.I would rather finance a car that is relatively newer. What advice can you give me?

Hey my 944 balance shaft belt went out is it normal to lose oil pressure when cranking to start before I had oil pressure

If there's actually copper in that spray I wouldnt want to use it anywhere near aluminium...
    The copper eats the aluminium..

Could it be that the random holes in the gasket serve as reliefs so the gasket can expand and contract without distortion and lengthen lifespan of the gasket?

Where did you learn everything and what had you get into it? I find your videos and instruction very knowledgable and pleasant. A rare talent. I teach Physics/Math in university and fixed my own cars just out of pragmatics. I mainly posted now to support you through the narcissistic "know it all"s who always have something to say. :)
