I have a very similar system for a light-based system. Light mages can manipulate the different colors of light to various effects. The six types of light magic are destruction (red), augmentation (orange), creation (yellow), protection (green), restoration (blue), and emotion/cognition (purple). Most light mages can only use one color, though some can use two, but it is very rare for anyone to be able to use 3 or more. I designed this system with cooperation between mages in mind. For instance, an orange mage can make a green mage’s shield spell stronger, or a purple mage can calm the emotions of someone being healed by a blue mage.
There also may or may not be a secret 7th color of light magic, invisible to the human eye, focused on corruption.

lol I had something very similar in mind, where there were augmentation (Red), transformation (Orange), creation (Yellow), separation (Green), control (Blue), synthesis (Purple), all of the above (White), and unidentified (Black)

I like that you avoided black, it’s an unusual choice. By choosing colors you can incorporate the secret magics, the unseen colors, infrared and ultraviolet.

@highlorddarkstar Interesting idea, I was working off of the roy g biv model, hence the colours. its possible I could incorporate more later

@@ArchivesofArinothbe careful in going to far though, because theoretically you can extend this magic to hues, tones, etc. then what about sounds? Sometimes it’s best to keep it simple, by limiting yourself as how far your system can extend to.

    • @ladymecha8718
      @ladymecha8718 หลายเดือนก่อน

It’s nice that this system doesn’t fall under the same trope of black means darkness. Your choices on this magic system will change the world’s cultures in perceptions to colour associations in symbolisms.
Now everyone will fear green robed wizards, instead of thinking they are associated to nature, they are now associated with death. Assassins may use hues of green to their clothes to bring fear into their work against their targets, or mark them as killers.
Libraries would use hues of orange to advertise they are hubs of knowledge.
Justice and guards would use hues of orange to advertise they are protectors.
Wizardry schools may add blue to their robes for students and faculty, contrasting to the other colour of discipline as part of their uniforms to indicate its educational.
Your cultures would definitely see colours differently than the tropes.

Have you thought doing white magic as combination of all magic because of the White light is a combination of all colors in the color spectrum.

Sounds like it would be a good “deus ex machina” magic. Dose everything and anything and is only welded by the strongest mages or even gods.

Black magic in a system like this would not imply evil, but instead would be anti-magic effects. Counterspells and spells that destroy magic items or spells that bestow resistance to magic would be Black.

I have a color-coded magical system as well, though I have yet to write a story to use it in. It's actually very similar in some areas.
    Violet= Psychic and mind
Blue= Fluid manipulation, wind and water
Green= Necromancy and communion with spirits
    Yellow/Gold= Creation and inspiration, art
    Orange/Bronze= Earth and metal
Red= Blood magic and healing, manipulation of the physical body.
Black= Physical magic, strength and combat
White= Energy, creation of lightning, as well as temperature.

This has actually helped me put the finishing touches on my own magic system, basically mages have channels in their souls that they use to draw in mana, give it purpose and then output it as a spell. There's a lot of inspiration from Frieren for the spells and training can widen the channels to allow bigger spells. Sorcerers are capable of internal mana production and so can cast even without ambient mana

As others have mentioned white being the mix of every color can open some possibilities in terms of how exactly the magic works, but it could result in one being overpowered, so perhaps learning white magic is a jack of all trades master of none situation.

If you are using color system does that mean the other species would have their own special magic as there are many colors humans can't see or are there only 7 for magic and also what about colorblind people 😅?can they use color magic even though they can't see it?

If you’re using colour theory from art as a source as a guide for your magic, you could add two (or three) more colours into your system. This is white, black, (and grey). White is all colours, Black is without colours, and grey being the between those two. By your system, you already have darkness/void, so to simply what they could be is:
White could be your Devine magic, as it’s the raw, unrefined, full power of all the magics. Rolemaster RPG would call it arcana. Such magic may not be just kept to your deities, (if you have them,) but to masters of all seven disciplines, you have for magic; a very rare to legendary few.
Black magic could be technology, so electricity, basically. Those who have no magical abilities, or perhaps those that use a power available to all, but nothing to do with your other disciplines. This is where your artificers and such exist. Using science instead of the mysticism.
Grey magic, would be those that mix science with your other disciplines of magic.
I hope this inspires you. Feel free to use these insights to your system to further develop your magic system.

well Black is what happens when all colour of light is absorbed by something (making it technically all colours at once) and white is what happens when all colours of light reflect off something (meaning it's no Colours)

I have a similar magic system with 6 sources of magic (with some similar themes like earth to orange) and a seventh from the negative counterpart to the 6 others, and I love the idea of each person having a magical affinity (my magic would fit in quite nicely with that concept)

Technically, yes, but in some games necromance powers have bright green effects, so it feels rather natural to me.
Where I'm from, green has (apart from its positive meanings) negative connotations too - like greed or envy. There are also idioms referring to sickness or being naive.

How does the magical elements work in your system? Is it separate, or does it exist? If it does exist, what are your magical elements? Many cultures of our world at different times had different choose elements.
Historically The west had four to five at the beginning: earth, water, fire, wind, and quintessence/aether. The east had five: fire, earth, wood, metal, and water.

Personally I abandoned the class system entirely in my RPG project which is reflected in the magic system as well.
I instead opted for magic based on "Belief shapes Reality" and "Manifestation of Will" principles.
So a person with a strong will might manifest some form of magic that lets him or her alter, warp, or manipulate reality in some way known as (Magic). So rare are such people that 1 in a million people might be born with arcane potential.
Mind you, there are ways for weak willed people to use magic (Ritual Magic, Eldritch Artifacts, and Magic Items). Though because magic is VERY rare and VERY powerful, like a greek legend where a magic object is adventure shaping. A mage might manifest only two different spells in their life that make them seem godlike compared to a normal human.
Though because belief shapes reality, collective beliefs about a region or person can unknowingly manifest curses or blessings upon someone or somewhere. As no one in the setting knows why magic exists or how a person with magic naturally got it.
That is something players will have to learn throughout their adventures.
