I'm sort of thinking that the GO II is going to be my new on-camera mic for most situations! I'll test it over the next month and see how often I wish I had the extra features. What do you guys think?! (ALSO: If you hear some buzzing in this video, it's because I had to use my very old and sort of busted VideoMic Pro to film this video. Had to though so I could show you the other three🤷♂)
I recently switched my on camera mic from the videomic ntg to the go 2 after the battery in the ntg stopped holding a charge. Definitely a better choice, much easier to use, less things that can go wrong, and it sounds great!
I love my Rode Video Mic Go II! I bought it a couple of months back for my TH-cam channel. After seeing a lot of great reviews on it specifically how it was compared to the ntg model I figured I'd give it a shot. Ultimately it's up my game in my audio. I don't do a lot of eqing. I just try and keep it simple. But surprisingly I use it a lot as a USBC mic for Zoom meetings. It's almost like you're buying two mics and one. Great video as always.
That was for sure the killer feature on the NTG and I'm stoked they brought it to the GO II now! For $100, I really can't imagine a better more well rounded mic for multiple uses!
@11:22 audio is horrible and that's what we found too as we shoot primarily outdoors and it's always windy. We had to go away from the external Rode mic with the dead cat because we were losing key moments of audio in our videos. The wireless GO II is a good mic (when it works) but it looks ridiculous on your collar...ours quit working after a couple of weeks and is now in for repair -- 4-6 weeks. Good outdoor audio is a struggle.
Something that I didn't mention in this video, but might make another explainer video about is how important the direction of the wind is to your audio. It's why I spun around in the super windy scenario, but I spaced on explaining that bit. Listen to that part again and you'll see that when the wind is straight into the mic or straight behind the mic, it sounds terrible, but when the wind is hitting the side of the mic, the audio is perfect. The direction of the wind hitting the mic is your key to good audio in windy situations🙌
Hey David... Thanks for the mic compare... For those of us who are less than pro... plug and go without more batteries to manage sounds perfect. Love the simplicity. Thx
The Go2 is the best mic I’ve ever gotten. I use it with the connect app and sync it in post. I have everything rode sells practically and this is a winner for me. I’m actually planning to buy another so can keep on in my studio setup and have another for on the go. Thanks for all of your reviews. I actually bought my first when this video came out and I came back today to add this comment
It's a super impressive mic Cory! After I filmed this, I did some other tests as well and it's hard to hear the difference between this and the NTG. So impressive for a little mic!
I purchased the RODE Video GO II to replace my older Video GO. It sounds great but it sucks it does not come with the dead cat. One draw back, I had to order the NTG because the Atomos Ninja V only works with powered mics. Just an FYI if you are using a Ninja V.
Oh. I did not know this. Is it a difference if you plug the mic into the camera instead of the Ninja? I guess that would solve the problem, wouldn’t it?
@@IAmKenArts Yes, but there is a slight frame delay (2 or 3 frames) when the mic is plugged into the camera that you can adjust for in the Ninja V because of HDMI. I figured if I buy the powered NTG that one less thing I need to worry about because the frame delay would vary from camera to camera.
I’ve just picked up the DJI wireless can’t wait to try them! Gonna enjoy this video tho! Just looking thru my footage from New York trying to make another video haha
Hey brother! Great video as usual, I’m having a lil trouble with this mic. I’m using it on my iPad Pro and he’s working but with the Apple lightning to USBC right to the mic and no power. I keep trying different cables and nothing, iPhone 13 Pro Max also with my GoPro hero black 8. Now power, no mic light. Plug it into the iPad and no problem. 😢 so only trs to trrs? Or the RODE USBC to lightning, and a 3rd cable for the GoPro is the ONLY ways?😢
Nice review, what audio level did you set your camera to when using the VideoMic GO II? I'm trying to figure out what's the best level for this mic since I know that self powered mics puts out better quality and the lower you set the audio in camera the cleaner the noise floor will be. Thanks!
That's solid advice, but it's changed a bit more as camera pre-amps have gotten much better! Back in the day, you wanted to rely on your mic's pre-amp, so I would dial my camera down to almost zero and use the +20dB on the VideoMic Pro. But now, I'm usually dialed somewhere around 10 on my Sony and both the NTG and VideoMic Pro+ sound great. With the GO II, I had my Sony A7Siii at 15. The biggest thing is to always have your audio levels on your monitor so you can make sure that you're averaging between -12dB and -6dB. So your camera level will change based on scenarios👍
I purchased some trrs to trs adapter cables and trs to trrs cables too, so I can use my mics on several devices from my gopro, phone and game capture devices
Friend please can you help me. What microphone do you recommend, Rode videomicro, Rode videomicro II, Rode Videomic go. I need a shotgun microphone to record concerts with my cell phone, most of the time the events are in closed places and I am very close to the band, the sound is strong. They have told me to record directly from the console but it is not an option for me because I do not have access to it, I also saw the boya mb 2021 microphone and it costs much less than the 2 roden, almost half, I would have to save about 2 months, thank you so much.
I use mine with the wireless go 2 as a dual recording setup that way i can control sounds and adjust on the wireless go 2 and also have the video micro go 2 as another option and also for wet weather so i dont wreck my wireless go 2 .
@@DavidManningvlog yeah definitely I’ve had my fair share of scene’s that I’ve had to leave on editing room floor through wind noise and my errors. Like using Apple genuine adapter to lightning I was plugging my sound into that from rode gear and it basically didn’t work and was stuck with iPhone audio, big mistake! Cheers David keep up the great work 🍻
I don't even need a mic for anything but you make great videos that explain stuff I didn't even know about so thanks. Ps hahaha Fresh Prince was great.

I own the Go Mic Pro, and I would like to know why the battery goes dead after a few days after turning the switch to off position. I have went threw more batteries then I can imagine, Does anyone else have this problem?
i wish you would have tested them from the rear! we speak from both behind the camera and in front of it and the sound coming in from the rear is important for us.
None of these are going to be great in that situation. With supercardioid directional mics, the sound from behind the mic is always really muffled compared to in front. Have you checked out something like the Deity D4 Duo for a setup like yours?
@@DavidManningvlog yeah i have but i guess it's not ideal for me. it outputs to two channels so i'd have to adjust volume twice and create a stereo track from both. seems like a lot of work for not much gain. thanks though. i just want a mic that records at maybe 40 percent volume from the rear so that when i'm talking from the back i can be heard.
Love all the videos and long time fan. Do have to say though all the audio on this video was peaking eek on the main mic which is ironic for a video talking about mics. It’s never happened on your others
Personally I would take the cheaper microphone less hassle no batteries worry about it really makes me want to have one of those for on the go always over my NTG…. You could barely tell the difference between the NTG and the go ii
I'm with you man! It's a super impressive little mic. My tweet to you was to hear the difference between these three in windy situations. It sounds like the NTG and GO II are doing some wind reduction in mic, because they both blow away the Pro+ in wind. It's got me thinking of selling the Pro+ and using the GO II as my on-camera, NTG as studio mic, then when I need more features, bringing the NTG as my on-camera!
@@DavidManningvlog Ya that sounds like a good game plan. It makes me want to pickup a GO II for on the go so I don't have to worry about a battery, but for now I am good. I have the NTG5 for the studio and then use the NTG Video mic as my on the go mic.
Hi David. Great comparison. Re wind rejection; I wouldn’t use any mic outdoors with a foamie to be honest. You’re testing more the quality of the foamies rather than the mic. I mention this because I’ve taken the Videomic Pro+ out on a beach in 40 - 50mph wind with its furry windshield. It was unbelievably good. The windshield is a ridiculous price, but boy, does it work! Oh man, sorry I wasn't clear on that one. For the wind tests, they were all rocking the furry windshields that are designed for each of these mics👍 Crazy how much the angle of the wind changes the audio pickup and wind noise on them!
@@iancraig Both the NTG and GO II seemed to have some sort of wind reduction happening on-mic. But something I didn't realize is that all of these mics sounded best when the wind was perpendicular to the mic. Straight on from the front or back and you hear a lot more noise!
Thanks David, that’s useful to know. I’ve always avoided using the NTG in wind and switched to Videomic Pro+ in those conditions. I like the sound of my Go but not really used it a great deal since I got it. It seemed very sensitive with its very high output and I felt that I had to keep an ‘ear out’ for very quick peaks which clipped quite easily. Almost like an NTG turned up. All great sounding mics though.

The GO II is going to be my new on camera mic! KISS is my moto.
For a mobile device (I do this now using the GO II) you can also use an SC4 which is a TRS to TRRS adapter from RODE
Oh, super slick! Thanks for adding that note👍
Because I EQ going with the II made so much sense. I have had more expensive on camera Mics but the II is my current fave.
About peaking, the audio in this video, in the indoor studio was a little bit hot hehe, like at 15:30 😄
Due to the change of setup I guess!
It totally was François! I pulled in my very old mic to do some work and it was clearly not up to the task🤣

Nope! I don't think there's a noticeable difference in camera battery. It's pulling so little power for the mic
