I turn off the a/c 5-10 minutes prior to coming home. Put your seatbelt on prior to turning on your vehicle. Summer - park in shady spot & put on a windshield sunscreen & vent windows. Winter - park in a sunny spot.

    Another trick.
Stack errands.rather than drive all over town, try keeping everything all in one general area, and run all errands on that side of town together.saves being at the store all the time, saves gas, saves wear and tear on vehicle.
Also, get a vehicle with good gas mileage.
    Keep engine properly maintained.
    Lighten loads.
    Maintain your vehicle.

Hope and Larry, great video. I am a professional driver and all the tips you have are spot on. Great job.
A little side tip..that is not about gas...but still worth mentioning is about weight ..not how much weight you have in your car but how much weight you have in your key chain. If you have a lot of weight on your key chain, it can pull on your ignition switch and damage it...
I know a lot of people collect key chains and they put them all on together..and that's too much weight.
Another money saving tip to save gas is to NOT go to stores...if you can..shop on line and have things delivered. Here where I live Wal-Mart offers free home delivery on purchases of 30 or 35 dollars or more.
That's pretty easy for me. Dog food..laundry soup etc etc.

Great mention on the ignition and keys. I wore out the ignition on my 1999 Ford Crown Vic with too much weight from the keys hanging from the ignition. It had to be towed and replaced. Both our current cars are keyless now so we won't have that problem anymore. I believe more and more cars are going to the keyless format. Deliveries will save you gas. Great tip, Terri!!!

Some I was aware of, and use. I learned some more. One I'd like to add is that when I'm at the top of a hill, I take my foot off the gas pedal and glide down the hill. Why burn gas to go downhill. When I see I'm going to have to stop, I take my foot off the accelerator and let the car slow down as much as possible before I have to brake. Somewhere I was taught that if you're having to put the brakes on to stop, in most circumstances, you've just wasted gas. Obviously that can't be applied a lot of the time, but there are times it applies.
I've got a Subaru with an instantaneous readout of current gas mileage. It's amazing to see the numbers change with just the tiniest movement of the foot on the accelerator. Plus, it constantly charts the average gas mileage. On every trip, I try to increase my gas mileage. It can't always happen, due to driving and traffic conditions, but I try.
I have to say I filled up today and it was the first time I ever had to pay over $40. I should also say, on balance, that that was literally only re second time I've filled the car up THIS YEAR!! I'm retired, have earned to order groceries on line, have medical appointments via telephone apps, bank online, etc. I just very rarely need to go out. But when I do, I definitely pick errands in one direction per trip. I got trained last year to stay in and learned I can function just fine most of the time that way.
I love your channel, love listening to you both so much. Thanks for sharing your wit and wisdom with us!
    Love to you both! ❤

Great tips Jonna. I actually do exactly the same things on hills and coming up on stop lights and stop signs. The less you use the brake the better. Thanks for filling these in. (I knew I'd leave a few gems out.). So glad you're making the most of your drives. Thank you for watching! Bless you!

Something I read- in the summer fill up at night when the fuel is cool and liquid. In the warmth it expands and takes up more room. I use my heated seats rather than heater when cold, and dress for the temperature. I use shields and deflectors when parked to reduce the heat inside and avoid the air conditioner.
When i had my Ford Falcon in Western Australia in high heats it ate fuel at low speeds and when the air conditioner was on so I drove carefully with open windows in town .
I've driven a lot this last 2 weeks and want to reduce journey's in the next two. Thanks for your reminders.

The gas prices change on Friday's near me and sometimes I miss the good deals on gas if I wait till the price changes. The gas station that tends to be the cheapest on Gas Buddy is a few miles away in the opposite direction from my normal routes. I tend to stick to the one on route instead of wasting gas going out of my way even though it isn't that far(a few miles one way). I've also noticed when I pass the cheap one, it is a lot busier and sometimes I feel as though I wait longer just to get to the pump and by that time I feel any savings is negligible. I have heard these tips before but I needed the reminder as I tend to have a lead foot. Thank you for sharing these great tips!! What popped into my head while I was watching is going through drive through at fast food places can be a drain if the car idles a lot, just a heads up for those who use drive through for take out like I do.

Our son does not drive and we don't have a reliable bus system so he gets rides from us. The key is he works for Kroger. He buys his food there and builds gas points as an employee, they sometimes give bonus points. His points we use for gas. We sometimes save as much as a dollar a gallon. That really a huge savings.
If you have a smart phone get a free or paid app for groceries, we use our groceries as it can be a shared app. When I discover we need something I add it and it updates to the husband's so he can look at it and go to the store after work. No extra trips, means gas saved.
When you have to drive anywhere keep a list of places you have to go and keep your driving limited by knowing what places are closest so you don't drive in circles wasting gas. Our grocery app has a to do that can keep track of that.
If your vehicle has a monitor for direction there might be a section that shows you something about miles driven so you learn to adjust your driving habits to help save. Do not jump start at stop lights. That faster acceration uses more gas.

An interesting situation that I noticed back in the 70s during the first gas crunch was that some of the gas saving tips ran contrary to defensive driving techniques. You did hit on two of the ones I always think of. The first is about driving speeds on the highway, you did hit on this one. In order to get the best practicle mileage, drive the speed limit or a bit slower but the defensive driving course stressed keeping your speed up with the surrounding traffic so that you are not an obstacle for the other drivers to have work their way around. Another is about tire pressure, for the best mileage the higher the pressure within the tire's specifications, the better but in doing that you not only decrease tire life, as you mentioned, but you also decrease the grip
your tires have on the road which can reduce your braking and manuvering capabilities, so best to follow the reccomended pressures listed for you car.
On the A/C thing back in the day I believe it was said that 50mph was the crossover speed where the wind resistance from the windows being down became greater than the drag on the engine from the A/C.
Thanks for your great videos, they are so appropriate in these trying times.

This was the BEST episode with Larry!! I love his personality! I try to be mindful about saving gas, but I haven't been writing down gas milage/tank...I think I will start there! Also a question: I was in a hurry the other day and left quickly. I realized it probably wasn't best for the vehicle...how long should I let it warm up and does it affect gas milage if I don't??

    • @UndertheMedian
      @UndertheMedian  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Larry said drive it easy for the first two miles. He really doesn't let our car warm up. In the winter, with cold temps. he will let it warm up for a couple of minutes, but in the summer, he does not. When putting the car away, he leaves the windows cracked two inches and the sun roof cracked open two inches to prevent excessive heat build up in the interior of the car. Of course, do this only if you are leaving the car in a safe place. When he leaves in the morning, he rolls the windows down right away to get all the hot air out of the car.

Litres and km are a different (metric) form of measurement, rather than an a US vs UK or Australian English term. Gallons are a lot bigger than litres (I think about 3L - gallon) and so this is why it appears they are spending more for fuel than in Australia, for example. (I'm in Australia.)

She keeps her car maintained at the dealership, any periodic check-up she gets one of the people in the office to initial beside the date on her service warrantee (I hope that's what it's called I don't know from cars at all)
She is still a very careful instinctive, defensive, safe, driver -- not scary at all. Better than many people a third or half her age. She's an incredibly intelligent woman. Love you Mom!
My Dad was an excellent driver when he drove, but he had to stop driving at 86. He really missed it. He's very ill with dementia now. He kept his cars so well and it rubbed off on my brothers, their vehicles are always tuned, maintained, and cleaned.

When gas got near $4 a gallon in the States, Larry took the bus back and forth to work. The fare was half of what he was paying in gas. However, at the time we had a van and an 8-cylinder car. So, our gas mileage was low. So, the bus fare was a wonderful deal.

Do I really need to use my air con at all?
Regardless of cost there’s another very good reason why you should use your air con, especially so this summer where we’re seeing record temperatures.
Earlier this year SEAT did some research into the effects of heat on drivers and the results are quite shocking.
They found that a difference of just 10°C, say 35°C inside the car compared to 25°C outside, can diminish reaction times by as much as 20%, that’s a fifth slower, or the equivalent to a blood alcohol reading of 0.05%, matching the Scottish limit and close to the maximum for the rest of the UK.
With outside temperatures recently soaring above 30°C in the UK cars can very quickly become ovens and drivers are at serious risk of dehydration. Cars parked in the sun can easily reach a startling 60°C, a whopping140 Fahrenheit!

I do have extra points accumulate over what I am spending because my son doesn't have a Kroger pump near him, but he still shops at Kroger and uses my card for the in-store discounts. Hi Larry and Hope! Just to let you know that here in Perth, Australia gas (we call it petrol) fluctuates hugely. We buy petrol by the litre (liter is the way you spell it I think). On Tuesdays it is about $1.29 Aus per litre. ($5.85 per gallon Aus, $4.58 USD). On Wednesday it is about $1.69 per litre ($7.67 per gallon Aus, $5.91 USD). It then gradually gets cheaper over the week till Tuesday comes around again and then it is once again at its cheapest. So from Tuesday to Wednesday it increases by 40 cents a litre ($1.81 per gallon). A gallon is a little more than 4.54 litres. So from Tuesday to Wednesday it increases by $1.81 per gallon. Obviously I only fill up on Tuesdays.

    • @UndertheMedian
      @UndertheMedian  3 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @lbec361
    @lbec361 3 ปีที่แล้ว

In addition, change your air filter frequently. The oxygen intake reduces your fuel consumption.
Timing lights work best by viewing the upcoming walk signal. If it still allows you to walk across the road, you can keep going the same speed without letting up on the gas in preparation to stop.
The Eco system is great but I want to know how hard it is on the motor. It skips a gear and doesn’t shift as often. I am scared to use it unless on the interstate.
I worked 50 miles away from home. I would check gas buddy in both towns because the price difference between towns could be very different. No one town was ever consistently less than the other. In Oregon our maximum speed is only 65.
We have a lot of rain and cruise control can cause you to hydroplane on the wet interstate at 65mph.

Really good points, Todd. I can't believe that in ECO mode your car will skip a gear. That doesn't sound like a good thing. Our Prius has CVT so it doesn't shift gears. I don't have ECO on the Fit since it's a stick-shift. I just have learned how to drive it economically. Changing the air filter is very important. I put a text in about that since it was forgotten in the video. In regards to cruise. I had one incident in our rented Honda Odyssey van in Kentucky where it hydroplaned while it was in cruise. Scary! Thanks for your comments!

I’m a retired credit union CEO but, my need to fix my own cars in high school and a weekend route driving a 14 hour a day delivery service van for over 200,000 miles, you learn to recognize every wrong sound and change in driving sensations is important. I'm thinking of a section of road where I know the speed limit is going to go to 45 from 50 .....& the road goes down....so why keep my foot on the gas?
Have a question: when you sitting at a red light, does it affect your gas at all to put the car in park instead of leaving it in drive & just braking?

For fuel efficiency we'd concur with your suggestions, but also factor in the use of public transport. Often a longer trip is cheaper by train especially if you can travell off-peak, there's only one travelling or you have a railcard. I know its a generalisation but I think the scale of our Countries makes a huge difference to our respective mindsets too. A car is not always essential as we do have bus and train networks that although far from perfect, does allow a proportion of people to get about without having to own a car, If gas prices were to half in the UK the roads would soon become gridlocked and the Government would lose a big source of tax!

Adequate rail service is something the US needs to work on, in my opinion. We can catch the train about an hour from out home, but sometimes it's hard to get to where you want to go. When our oldest worked in Colorado for a summer while in college, he really wanted to take the train out, but opted for airfare instead because he just couldn't get to where he needed to go by rail.

Myth Busters tested it and found that the AC uses more fuel than windows down. HOWEVER, I live in SW Arkansas and the AC will be on in the summer!

Loss weight. Reduce the amount of weight you have in your car, things you can leave at the house.
