    Ask for a Take Home container at the time you order. When your meal comes just put half in the container, that way you don't eat too much and you can eat the other portion at home later.

    When we go on vacations, we only eat one meal a day. The other one is breakfast free at hotel or in room, and a picnic meal

      We do that too. Whenever on holiday only a maximum of one meal out per day. Sometimes we'd manage none. We always visit the local supermarket on the first day and get in basic supplies to cover breakfast and one other meal a day. We always go on self catering holidays so have a full kitchen so this works well for us. A big part of holidays is ease, so eating out is an important part to include but it doesn't need to be every meal every day.

    We used to eat out a lot. Now it's once a WEEK. Not ideal, but needed. It's my loonngggggg day!!! We keep it cheap. Chinese take out or 2 pizza's. Its a trade off but needed. Plus the portions are large and we get a few lunches out of the Chinese food and a few slices are always left for the kids to snack on. So that is NICE!! I also bought myself a great (splurge) espresso machine and all my flavored syrups BUT I NEVER GET COFFEE DRINKS AT STARBUCKS EVER ANYMORE!! THIS HAS SAVED THOUSANDS over the years!!!

    I like to pick up a container of chow mein with cooked noodles(with tiny slivers of meat or tofu) for $8.50 CDN. I take it home and divide it into 3 or 4 portions. It contains a few vegetables but I stir-fry a variety of vegetables and mix them into the 1/4 or 1/3 portions. It tastes exactly the same and I still have 2 or 3 more lunches. I add a different mix of vegetables to each lunch and add one of the little soy sauce packets to each for extra flavour. Oh, and the lovely restaurant throws in a container of white rice for free. I add a little milk or plant milk , a teaspoonful of sugar or some raisins, and some cinnamon and simmer it on low heat for 20 minutes or so and voila, I have
    rice pudding for 2 days. So 3-4 delicious "take-out" meals AND dessert for less than $9. And yes, the restaurant staff member who gets my order ready gets a tip too!

      We don't either. We only go out about 3 times a year. Really, as a vegan, eating out is pretty challenging. We have to check on-line menus every single time and plan ahead.

    Thank you for talking about tipping the wait staff. I just took a side gig as a server at a pub to pay off some bills and it’s hard work!

  • @mariayelruh
    @mariayelruh 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    Very glad you pointed out tipping the server appropriately. Too many think it's OK not to tip if they are on a tight budget. If you can't afford to tip, you can't afford to eat out.

    • @helenstory9924
      @helenstory9924 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Different in the UK where servers are paid minimum wage, tipping is more at discretion. So you could fairly eat out and treat yourself, even if a generous tip isn’t in the budget.

    • @UndertheMedian
      @UndertheMedian  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sadly, in the US, restaurants can pay workers a wage that is significantly under the minimum wage, claiming that tips will make up the difference. Much of the time, they don't - especially if the tips are split between the server and person who clears the table. The "tipped wage" varies by state. But, in some areas restaurant workers can make as little as $2.13 an hour. If it is a slow night or there are no customers, they are working for, basically, nothing. Honestly, it's a bee in my bonnet and I don't think it's fair.

  • @jc10907Sealy

    This is helpful. I am trying to make better eating out decisions. Eating out gives me variety, healthy food, socialization, ease of no cooking no cleanup. I am trying to be mindful about how, where, when with a budget. I only eat one meal a day so eating out works for me as a single, working person. I am trying to limit it.

    Waitstaff are paid way less than minimum wage as the owner of the establishment expects tips to pay for the difference of the wages. I’m friends with a waitress and she is really good at her job and works hard to please the customer. She is really hurt when some of her customers leave very little tip or no tip at all.

    I am 70 and have a very comfortable life. I do not need to be thrifty anymore but it is such a built in habit I always look for ways not to overspend. On my girlfriend dates I will choose soup only or side salad only (not the entree). Sometimes an appetizer is my lunch. Plenty of food, I enjoy the company and I keep the cost down.

  • @lauriehuttunen4202

    Re tips:. It's always best to tip in cash even if you use a card for the bill. Some restaurants deduct the credit card service charge from the tip and the wait person does not get what you intended to give.

      I had a friend who always made sure that she surreptitiously tipped the waitperson personally because she knew that some restaurant owners would take a portion of the tips left on the table. My daughter, whenever she can, will leave a stupendous tip because she knows the wait people are paid crap by the big chain restaurants. One time she had a waitress ask if she was sure about the amount of the tip and was almost in tears when my daughter said yes. I was hardly as proud of my daughter as I was that day. Can you do a video on affordable feeding a teenager? My teenage son has a huge appetite! It’s very expensive

    • @marthamette3018
      @marthamette3018 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      During puberty years, it is important to feed your teen a protein-rich diet. It helps with muscle development and so much more.
      Here are some protein rich foods:
      Beans, fish, chicken (or any lean meat), eggs, nuts, tofu and lentils. If interested, Larry & Hope did a video on how to make lentil burgers.
      Round out each meal with other veggies & fruits. If your teen is in sports, good amount carbs is good to increase their energy output.
      Shred the meat & pair it with another low cost protein.
      Meal ideas:
      - chicken & bean burrito.
      - baked potato with lentils & Turkey sausage
      - Thai noodles with eggs & peanut sauce
      - snacks; fresh pop corn, hummus & carrot/celery sticks, bean brownies (purée beans & mix in brownies & bake).

    Vegan here too. We have an “eat out meal” at home. Instead of subway, Pizza Hut, chic fil a, I splurge my grocery budget to buy the knock-off items to make the same things at home. Increases my grocery budget for that week yet, still 75% cheaper than eating out.

    I completely agree on ordering water with dinner concept. For our family of four by the time you pay $2.50 for a soda or iced tea, add sales tax and tip on that amount, you’re well over $3 and multiply that by four, that’s $12 on the bill before we’ve ever even ordered our food. Also a lot of times my husband and I will share an appetizer and then share a meal. We get to enjoy both options, it’s usually cheaper and we both have plenty of food.

    Also, rather than eat out or get take out, I will allow a "splurge" of a low fuss convenience food that we normally wouldn't eat. You can't beat an Aldi's refrigerated cheese pizza for $4.99. They are delicious and huge. 2 pizzas for $10 will feed the two adults and 3 older teenagers and there is some leftover or Trader Joe's taquitos ,canned refried beans and bagged salad, or a roasted deli chicken, bagged Caesar salad, and baguette meal. I have a friend who buys Whole Foods bbq seitan, deli rolls, and their vegan potato salad as her go to easy meal. Especially if you do one big shop a month and fill in, that big grocery day is a great day for doing this.

    I always love watching your videos. Today I got $40 off my groceries via instacart. There was a promo so I took full advantage of it. I also got free delivery.

    Great video. 😁We held our wedding reception at a great Chinese food restaurant with a huge buffet. They have about 20 tables of food. We saved $10 per plate by getting the lunch buffet instead of dinner buffet.

    I live in Central Florida. Originally from Ohio. My family and I went to Farrell's in Columbus,Ohio. It was fun . It was in the 70s when we went.
    I have went to restaurants for early bird specials. Have gotten coupons out of the monthly flyers for restaurants and used for the restaurant I wanted to go to.
    I have signed up with my birthday on restaurants websites and have received free meals on my birthday
    Friends treated me to Cracker Barrel for my birthday. Since it was my birthday a few of the employees sang Happy Birthday to me and the waitress gave me a free piece of their Chocolate Coca Cola Cake for my birthday.
    I have went to restaurants and they will have a 5 dollar meal deal that includes the drink with the meal. I love to get lunch specials when dining out.

    Also a tip, McDonalds can be quite pricey here in Canada but once a month I like to treat my teen boys to lunch while they do their online schooling, I always order the jr Mcchicken meal which comes with fries and a pop for 5 bucks, I get 3 of those meals and an extra jr sandwich for my oldest. Price including tax is 22.50 or so, which for Canada is pretty decent.
    It's not healthy but I love the pop and fries.....
    Once a week or so we order a king size pizza and that is one of the cheapest take out for a fam of 4 at 46 bucks.

    Besides using coupons or gift cards, I can make a meal into three meals (take out) bcuz I had weight loss surgery and can’t eat all of it in one sitting. So my meals avg to be about $3 for a $10 meals.

    I have to admit sometimes I would go to Costco and eat samples. By the time I leave I’m full and it was free.

    Just an fyi: Gift cards last indefinitely in certain states per state law. It really depends on where you live.

    Oh my gosh, I loved Farrell's Ice Cream Parlour!! I didn't like ice cream but I loved going there for their food & fun atmosphere. They reopened some locations here in California & the host of The Profit tried to revive them but sadly, I think they're all closed now. Such good memories there.

    I love apps. I use McDonald’s and hungry jacks. I don’t eat it often but they have games you can play or just offers. I will eat out maybe once a month. The other day I got a chicken burger for $1. I figure if I can’t replicate it at home for that price, I don’t mind buying it out.

    Our pubs won't let us order the senior citizen meals if we're not pension claiming age here in the UK. At least the pubs and restaurants I've asked at wouldn't let me. A couple!

    It’s funny you brought up about the breakfast and lunch menu cheaper. My husband and I always go out about 3 o’clock 2 o’clock just before they go to the early menu for dinner we always pay for lunch and we have a big lunch and we give ourselves 50 bucks we do a big lunch and then before we go to church on Saturday night so after church that we have a bowl of cereal or a bagel something like that and this is just the way we do it and yes it saves a ton of money and now if we don’t eat out on Saturday we give ourselves $50 for the weekend, So then we are able to order a pizza and have it delivered and if I don’t want pizza I can get chicken or shrimp or whatever it fits right in the budget but then one weekend a month we allow 100 because we have Nana Papa night and we have our four grandchildren and we either eat frozen pizzas here to Lotsa Motsa’s when they’re on sale and then we go out and do something or we stay here and then we order a movie or do something here I get it I love you guys and it really brings at home when you’re called under the median because this is the truth

      Great planning, Sherri. Sounds like you guys have found a system that works for you. We used to always do cold cereal on Sunday nights. That was so fun and gave Hope a meal off (from preparing food).

    These were all fantastic! I am surprised that our Safeway in town still advertises on the back of the receipts! We have found fantastic deals for Mexican restaurants...which always has free chips and salsa...so we can order less for the kids as they love to fill up on chips!
    We have noticed that since reopening from Covid, many restaurants have less options and are more expensive...so it might be worth calling the restaurant to see if the online menu is up to date!😊
