I was thinking about the same. But this is supposed to be Karen, not Caroline. Caroline always wanted Ridge. As far as I know, I don't think Karen ever wanted Ridge.
But Karen took advantage of the torch Thorne carried for Caroline. Karen knew she wasn't "the real thing." She wasn't Caroline. But by using Thorne's unrequited love, she tried to land this man. It worked for a while, but they realized they weren't being true to each other. Thorne couldn't be fooled by a substitute and Karen didn't like men.
