    The ingenuity to harness water power and then create those machines doing specific tasks is really amazing - Great video 👍

      My thoughts exactly. It's really really good engineering.

    That was absolutely fascinating and wonderful to see. If only it was still in operation so I could have gone and made a video of the operation myself. I've seen your posts on social media around the mishandling of the water wheel and machinery, an absolute shame it's all lost or beyond repair. What wonderful machines they were.
    Anyway, I had a couple of pinches of Gawith snuff as I watched this - Alan and the others who worked there must have had the nicotine tolerance of elephants with the dust and handling!

    This video is a joy to watch. What a fascinating process it looks effortless but that's testament to the great skill of the Millers.

    What a splendid hidden gem I have found today. Thank you kindly for uploading this historic footage. Made my heart sink when I read the description however. What a damn shame.

    Incredible look into how the Reginal Herb was processed. Wonderful that we still have Gawith & Hoggarth producing elite quality tobacco and snuff to this day.

    Fascinating to see this. All the old machinery working away as it had done so for hundreds of years.

    I can imagine this ol chap relaxing at the pub with his mates after work chatting away about their gaffers, Margret Thatcher, and other geezers. A real shame what happened to this place.

      @@DerekPigpenHooker it's above in the description where it says views and 3 years ago. "After the mill closed, all the machinery was taken for storage at the yard of a local business man who had agreed as part of the planning conditions to restore and display it but it was "accidentally" scrapped by contractors working for him. And the council and heritage societies never followed up to check that planning conditions and agreements were being adhered to it was all lost.

    I make plug, just took a shot at some toast cause of you. I soaked it in a shot of Kentucky bourbon, then sundried it for a day. The leaf was Honduran corojo. The snuff I created, could change the world. It's called "ye o'l hand grenade"

    Amazing to see what a waterwheel can power. And also amazing is the fella in the video has still got both arms and all his fingers. I would not want to put my mitts that close to working machinery.

    21p in 1991 We would never have believed Mr Snuff would be selling it for £4.00 this time last year but in 1991 they would have thought it would all be over at that price.

    As someone who has spent all of my career in front of a screen I envy work like this. Shame the machinery was scrapped. This was an eco-business run on hydro-power. Foolish decision to close it.

    • @gawithhoggarth
      @gawithhoggarth  3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      We don't know the exact age of the machinery that was in the Helsington Mill. Certainly some of the machinery used at the Kendal Brown House and Lowther Street came from Scotland in the late 1700's.
