I rather like Wilhelm Kempff's rendition, the gentle rocking like a cradle song, the brightness, the light in the high register like reflections of light on water, very gentle, colourful, dreamy and poetic. Reminds me of how I feel on warm and sunny afternoons on my own boat....
The Grigory Ginzburg Ilike so far. I like the way he melts the left hand away so that you don't hear the abrupt distinction of the triplets and duplets. Just this gentle natural rocking
Some rendition seems to me a bit to fast.- It makes me imagine a turbulent river instead of a secluded lake.- If my criticism seems to be improper I beg your pardon.-
I agree with you... it reminds me of listening to U2's version of Cole Porter's Night and Day and The Beatles' Helter Skelter, then the originals, or Eric Clapton's Layla... I tend to prefer to slower versions.
It's sad how when one thinks of liszt, only hungarian rhapsody no. 2 or campanella come to mind. What happened with all these late works of his? and why doesn't anyone play them? Rubinstein, ashkenazy, kissin, and all the popular painists in their time. None played them. I believe this is the real voice of liszt, Not his virtuoso pieces, which is what he's known for.
I fear that it's a bit of a pissing contest in the classical music performance realm. Gotta play dem fireworks shows. I totally agree however, I think Liszt's late studies of atonality are very interesting and years ahead of their time yet it's hard to find many renditions of those pieces on youtube.
I generally find Liszt's music too "over the top" -- not his grandly conceived Beethoven transcriptions, of course -- but few compositions can match this wonderful piece for sheer loveliness and serenity. Thanks for putting together this highly informative and inspired post. And should you ever decide to expand it to twenty pianists, or to thirty, it would still be an inexhaustible musical experience. Much appreciated! p.s., I have and treasure the Bolet recording, but I think I will need to add the sublime rendition by Nelson Freire! Edith Farnadi's purity of tone is quite impressive as well, but perhaps a bit rushed in places? p.s.s., Listening to this again months later, I'm now struck by the loveliness of Lazar Berman's performance.
Great assortment of interpretations! If listeners wish to expand their sense of the possibilities of this lovely piece even further, here are two fine versions on "period" pianos: th-cam.com/video/8ZSGlrRve-A/w-d-xo.html [Tomas Dratva / Richard Wagner's 1876 Steinway at Wahnfried, Bayreuth] th-cam.com/video/PCg1bR_FZUM/w-d-xo.html [Daniel Grimwood / 1851 Erard]

Bolet gives an absolutely beautiful interpretation. Beautiful colors and voicing.
21:12??? II. Pastorale - Liszt Années de pèlerinage by Lazar Berman
We got a bonus I guess? Lol
J’adore la version Bolet. Brendel l’a joué en bis lors de son concert d’adieu à Lyon, j’en avais les larmes aux yeux

He is my favourite as well. There is something so atmospheric and colourful about his playing
Interesting, as that piano seems out of tune, but maybe it's an old recording.

Musique de la beauté du lac de Wallenstatt exaltée par la passion amoureuse de Liszt!
Uma preciosidade da comparação interpretativa, bela entusiasmante escolha das pinturas!
21:12 that’s not au lac lol!!!
I most liked and admired and was most affected by the interpretations of Kempff and Bolet.

Agree, but this piece is actually an early work of his.

alexandre calame est mon arrière arriere arriere arrier grand pere il a reussi dans la peinture grace à napoleon 3
manca una esecuzione di Alfred Brendel, il mio favorito in questo pezzo.
Molto bello! Ma chi sono i 10 pianisti esecutori?

ascolta Brendel....
Jorge Bolet sans hésitation.
Some parts of the record does not have anything or volume is very low.
I suggest adding Kun Woo Paik's version.
If you want to listen to Kun Woo Paik, it is obvious, just please listen to him ;) !
You seem to not have understood the essence of this channel....
Kempf is the best! Andre Watts in second and Cicollini is third!

I guess liszt himself was the best, but where can you find it?
Nyiregihazi is the best here :)
Nyiregyhazi is the best everywhere
everything in his interpretation of this sounds like staccato, terrible left hand and right hand volune
Either the piano is out of tune, or the recording is very bad.. I agree with @Alkan on the interpretation...Pedaling is also unclear..
Ginzburg, Berman and Cicollini.
Listen to Ludwig Hoffmann's interpretation!
