Monster World 4 is the 4th Monster World game. The first was Monster Land, then Dragon's Trap and then Monster World on the Genesis. Wonder Boy 1 wasn't a Monster world Game so if Monster World IV had Wonder Boy in it, it'd actually be Wonder Boy 5. Easy to get confused!
Wonderboy III: The Dragon's Trap is my favourite Wonderboy game, I can't wait for the offically supported remake by Lizardcube and DotEmu, which is supported by series creator Ryuichi Nishizawa.
These guys are crazy thinking that Super Adventure Island II sucks. That game was AWESOME! It was a nice change of pace from the traditional side-scrollers.
Just found this channel, and it's awesome. I especially like these kinds of videos, where you go over /retro/ games, and all the different ports and stuff.
I don't think so. Best AIs are Adventure island 2-4 (4 was JPN-only, but you can emulate it and menus are in English anyway). Why? Because freaking dinosaurs. I mean, they're so cute! And useful as well. Can't get over it that they took those in any AI game from SNES on. I secretly hoped that WiiWare one will have them back, but looking at videos of them that isn't the case :(. Believe me, I'd buy Wii JUST to play this game, IF it would have dinosaurs back.
Also Jaleco made a port of Wonder Boy in Monster Land on Famicom called Saiyūki World. They changed all the characters to Journey to the West characters, but the game itself is pretty much the same. I find it funny that the same game exists under so many different names and made by different companies on different platforms.
What is interesting about Adventure Island II is that they figured out how to get your character to ride a monster, but Miyamoto could not figure out how to get Yoshi to properly work on the NES, claiming limitations
In fairness Miyamoto was referring to vanilla NES hardware. Like most games in the second half of the NES's lifespan Adventure Island 2 had an enhancement chip boosting its abilities.
Hello from the future! I got some great news for you! There's a remake of Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap, and a brand new game called Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom! Also Monster World IV finally made it to the US as part of the Genesis Mini!
Same, i always thought adventure island was a ripoff. I came to this video 30 years later wanting to know if I was right and it wasnt the other way around. Yep, I was right. Wonder boy was the better game, and with way better music and artwork!
The original Wonder Boy arcade game was the best one. Never mind the Master System or NES ports; you can play the real thing. The Adventure Island games replaced Wonder Boy with 1980s Japanese celebrity video gamer Toshiyuki Takahashi, which is why the sprite looks so derpy.
@TCJJ We will eventually get around to shooters, but it'll have to be an "our favorites" sort of thing as there are tons and tons of shooters. We'll definitely be splitting episodes between horizontal and vertical.
I am an Adventure Island guy because I grew up NES. Never had a Sega console till I got a Genesis. I have recently gotten into the PC Engine and I own New Adventure Island for it. I must say that my top 5 are these and in random order: New Adventure Island PC Engine, Super Adventure Island SNES, Adventure Island 1 thru 3 on NEs and Famicom. Thanks for the video guys! I really enjoy them and learn. Great job!
Also, Monster World 4 was translated into English and released on XBLA and WII Virtual Console a while back. Plus The Dynastic Hero is available on Wii VC too for those of us who don't want to spend a fortune on it.
Man,I can't believe that at one time in gaming history,Arcade games were really this simple.I meant Wonder Boy,I am glad that this whole depleting health thing did not catch on much (if any?).
Why did they change Hudson Bee to a Fairy? In the Japanese version of Adventure Island, it would be a Bee that you collect for invinsibility. The Hudson Logo is a Bee which explains WHY but I guess they thought it would go over some people's heads >.< I wonder if Game Sack watches GameCenter CX?
Maybe they thought that people would avoid the bee thinking it was an enemy here in the West considering the africanized killer bee scare of the time lol
Adventure island 2 is my most chilhood memorible game ever...EVER! Just listening the music stage 1 or water stage it teleport me instantly to the good ol days, where/when burden of life does not exist.
I loved Super Adventure Island 2... but maybe that's because I was one of those weird people that never dug the gameplay style of the original Adventure Island. Not many games at the time had you collecting weapons and abilities that you could go back to previous levels with and open up new areas or grab items that were out of reach when it was your first time going through that level. That was something I really liked about the Mega Man X games and SAI2 had that same sort of feel when it came to exploring and collecting items.
Very true, I actually never really considered Super Adventure Island 2 as part of the series, it seemed like a totally different style game in the Adventure Island universe, great game nonetheless
You forgot Saiyuuki World (The prequel to Whomp 'Em, released only in japan), Because that's Jaleco's version of a Wonder Boy in Monster Land for the Famicom!
Fun fact: In Brazil, Tec Toy is the company that had rights (still has today) on Sega products in Brazil. Instead of Wonder Boy in Monster Land for the Master System, they modifyed it and made Mônica no Castelo do Dragão, replacing the main character for Mônica, a famous comics in Brazil. Instead of a sword, she attacks the enemies with a blue toy bunny. The same happened with Wonder Boy III, which in Brazil was Turma da Mônica - O Resgate.
Amazing video! I think you guys just forget that Monster World IV received an official English release for the Wii Virtual Console back in the days. On a side note, here in Brazil we got our on version of Wonder Boy in Monster Land and Monster World called Monica no Castelo do Dragão e Mônica na Terra dos Monstros
such a nice show. i always thought that wonder boy was a rip off of Adventure Island! imagine the injustice. In Brazil we got a mod of Wonder Boy 2 and 3. Tec Toy, which distribited Sega products in Brazil (and are responsible for the Street Fighter II port for the Master System) released these games using a local character called Monica. They have also translated all the text to portuguese. Look for "Monica no astelo do Dragao". I think that the Master System localizations in Brazil and Europe would be a great show!
I accidently stumbled upon your episodes, and they are really great. Esp. this one bring back so much memories and that i really miss my beloved Master System. Thanks a lot. But i also wanted to know if you offer somewhere the arranged music themes (which i assume was done by you guys as well :D) for download? Looking in particular for the great arranged Wonder Boy II over world theme at 5:40. But also some others from other episodes.
Man thanks for clearing that up for me. One of my earliest games I own was wonder boy on my sega master system. Me and my brothers would play it constantly. Then I go to my cousin house and he’s playing adventure island. I was shocked to see the same game on a different system under another name.
This video is so great. I get that now you don't have to act all fanboyish nowdays but honestly, it was so great to hear you guys talk over a game at the same time, talking with each other, making jokes... It might be cool if you guys could do that thing again on a more recent video... I get that this is because of time constraints, but I think you guys could talk over skype and record each other by yourselves what you talked and just have it edited together then... It's just so you don't have to be on the same room to record it.... Anyway, sorry if this is something you talked about before, I just watched this video again and loved it again... It is the reason I subscribed to your channel! Much love.
There is now a new entry in the Wonder Boy series Monster Boy and The Cursed Kingdom. I see they ditched the Wonder Boy name, but it is critically praised, and takes a lot of inspiration from Dragon’s Trap, with the different animal forms.
+Game Sack yo forgot to mention the brazilian versions of wonder boy for genesis and master system D: ... Tec Toy also did a sprite hack to put some famous HQ chars (turma da mônica) just search for "turma da mônica no castelo do dragão" (Monica`s gang in the dragon`s castle) ... and you ll see em o.o
I find it kind of hilarious that with this already confusing couple of series they chose to name the PC Engine "Dragon's Curse" as "Adventure Island" in Japan. XD
You guys are awesome. Thanks for bringing back some good ol memories of wonder boy & adv Island. Loved em both. You guys should do a live stream playing these retros
Adventure Island and Rainbow Island were some of my first games. They were super cheap back then (for games.) Were also the first two games I ever finished. Loved them. Will rebuy on the Virtual Console.
Well, there was an Adventure Island game on the PS2 and there is a famicom game called Sayiuki World which is a WonderBoy 2 like game and by that I mean it's exactly like WonderBoy 2 but with different sprites.
I only own and have only played Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap on the Master System. I knew vaguely that the Wonder Boy series was a bit messy (for lack of a better word), but I didn't know to the extent that the original was ported over to the nes which spawned an entirely new series (Adventure Island). The most interesting thing for me about this video is I have now learned where the character, Master Higgins, comes from in Saturn Bomberman. Back in the day, me, my brothers & friends knew nothing of the Adventure Island series, so one of us just named the character "Chuck Rock Baby" since he looked similar to Chuck Rock with the big chin and similar attire. The odd thing about it is, Saturn Bomberman was completely exclusive to the Sega Saturn (it's in the title), yet it features two characters from Nintendo only games, the aforementioned Master Higgins, and Milon from Milon's Secret Castle. The real kicker is that neither of these characters were playable in any of the many Nintendo Bomberman games, Milon does make a cameo appearance in the Super Bomberman 2 password screen, but that hardly counts.
Always liked Adventure Island - never knew Wonder Boy existed until playing a Game Gear ROM recently and knew something was very similar within the first few seconds.
it's funny to see how much game sack has changed over the years and how they operate.
2023 and gamesack still going strong
@@metaljo666 "Yes, this is a true fact."
I’m here 9 years later & honestly, this is one of my favorite episodes!
Super Adventure Island 2 is legit one of my top 5 SNES games. The sound track is amazing too. I'm sad you brushed it off so quickly.
I loved it as well
Easily the best one
It's probably the best game in this entire retrospective, and I'm a big fan of the Monster Land/World games.
I came here to say exactly this after seeing you guys skim over it. It's probably one of the best Adventure Island games I've ever played
Never played the second SNES game but I thought the first one was terrible.
Wonderboy III: The Dragon's Trap is my favourite Wonderboy game, I can't wait for the offically supported remake by Lizardcube and DotEmu, which is supported by series creator Ryuichi Nishizawa.
It's the best side scroller i've ever played. Played it many times and still haven't discovered all the secrets.
out now! Same with 'Toki' remake!
Remake is awesome! Monster boy and the cursed Kingdom is an amazing spiritual successor as well.
you can pause with the Player 2 controller in Dragon's Trap. Love that game! "Metroidvania" style
Also, MW4 is in English on XBLA and you can add scanlines for authentic looks!
These guys are crazy thinking that Super Adventure Island II sucks. That game was AWESOME! It was a nice change of pace from the traditional side-scrollers.
True that. I wanna try it again some day when I have more time to devote to it.
Just found this channel, and it's awesome. I especially like these kinds of videos, where you go over /retro/ games, and all the different ports and stuff.
I didn't know Wonder Boy games went under SO MANY different names! I'd love to look at a table that shows all the releases in order
16:16 helps a lot
These old episodes where they just argue are hilarious. Coming back after finding out daves leaving
Dave's leaving? Oh shit!
I remember my Dad getting addicted to Wonder Boy, staying up all night trying to beat it. Good times.
Hey, you guys used my orchestral remix of the Wonderboy in Monsterland music! :)
I think Super Adventure Island II is the best game in any of the series.
The original Wonderboy was the best. Much smoother and more responsive than the Adventure island seris.
@@Art-Sin Nah
Adventure island siries is far better than wonder boy.
I've never seen an episode this far back and I've been watching for quite a while. Awesome show. Love you guys, kick ass!

I support him.
you can't say that in 2021
@@akalyx i think you can
Adventure Island (1) for the NES had some excellent music throughout. ♥
You guys always make such a neat and fairly complete presentation of nostalgia, but with great humor, congrats on that!
What is interesting about Adventure Island II is that they figured out how to get your character to ride a monster, but Miyamoto could not figure out how to get Yoshi to properly work on the NES, claiming limitations
But the monsters in AI 2 are more like power-ups, which the NES can handle.
In fairness Miyamoto was referring to vanilla NES hardware. Like most games in the second half of the NES's lifespan Adventure Island 2 had an enhancement chip boosting its abilities.
i do not get why this is not more popular... the humor and the rivalry between you is very funny
Hello from the future! I got some great news for you! There's a remake of Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap, and a brand new game called Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom! Also Monster World IV finally made it to the US as part of the Genesis Mini!

:OOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I absolutely ***LOVED*** Super Adventure Island II. Such an amazing game in every single way imaginable.
