You know what Dave you should tour as a Back up or second guitar with the Peppers, i mean there's no one more qualified than you, at least here in the tube to play chili peppers songs, you've got the skills plus feeling. Hands down to you my man cheers.
Wow! Very enlightening. Dave is definitely on to something : 90% of Frusciante sound is in the fingers! Then, a good strat in a Marshall amp. Only a few effects, Ibanez WH10 wah & DS-2 distortion. I would recommend for those who can afford it the Big Muff Pi (combined with ds-2 for max sustain in the solos), the Electro-Harmonix Holy Grail for reverb and maybe a small clone or boss CE-5 for chorus. All very affordable options. Forget all the moog pedals and other expensive shit. Become a rock star first, then buy expensive gear :-D
I've started running my amps with middle and treble at zero. I never imagined that would sound so good or even thought about trying it, AMAZING! Thanks Dave for your energy, enthusiasm and tech knowledge, you and your channel are the best!
Dave I love your playing and I have told you before you are in my top 3 favorite guitarist. Obviously John is there as well! But I also am inspired not just by your playing and teaching but knowing how similar things in life we deal with are it keeps me going when I see you posting. Thank you, I feel I can call you friend because if we met you certainly would be one! Thanks!
Love that mid + treble to zero trick! I just tried it on an old combo which I've never liked the sound of, now its soniclly transformed! Keep up the good work man!
I appreciate the explanation at the end, it can help anyone sound like any guitar idol they want. Studying and listening could take you a very long way.
I'm picking up an old MG100HDFX and the matching 4x12 today from an amazing fellow musician for 200$!! I can't believe it, I'm so excited! And what an absolute steal of a deal too.
You just saved me over a thousand bucks. I been trying to recreate a John frusciante type guitar but you know what... After watching videos like these... What's the point of shelling out tons of money in a attempt to be just like him? You can sound like him without going nuts financially and it's not about being another guitarist. It's about being you in the end. So no worries : ) I already got 2 strats. I have a big ass marshall. I'm going to get one of those sweet ass katana artists. I think that's close enough lol. Dave, here's a tip on the chorus pedal but keep this just between us......Ibanez Soundtank Super Chorus. Again, my sincere apologies for ever thinking you were a Scot. Hey I grew up in America having only lived in Scotland and the Thames valley of the U.K.
Sounds so much like John's tone. Dave, You make a strat sound just the way a strat was meant to sound. At least that's the strat sound in my head if that makes sense. Lol. I know your a strat player, and that's where you feel at home. I'm the same way I've had so many different guitars but always come back home to strats. Have you ever tried one of the Fender Dou Sonic Hs by chance? Just curious because you should check one out if you ever get the chance. I got one and ever since it's become my main guitar. It's the only guitar I've felt at home with other that a strat. They truly are amazing and super comfortable to play. Takes a bit to get used to it being offset but once I got used to it, it just feels so right. Anyways great playing man as always. Sounds so much like him it's crazy.
+Dave Simpson That's awesome! Yea I love mine, and I was really surprised at the quality for the money. I usually buy budget guitars and won't spend anymore than a few hundred cause I just feel like all the super expensive stuff isn't really a huge jump in quality really. A lot of the best guitar players in my home state just play with budget gear cause our economy is such a mess here. We're the poorest state in the US. I never needed expensive gear myself to get the sound that was in my head. I love simple solid state amps as well. Just feel tube amps are overstated and not much difference in sound. Anyways keep up the great work man. Love your videos and always checking out your band stuff as well.
Great video, thank you! Can you talk through the various Marshall EQ dials set to 0 - this seems really unusual to me - e.g. having a great sounding amp but choosing not to use its EQ to colour the tone
Wait, wait, what kind of Amp head? MG? Really? I love it. The MG’s get a bad rap! I have 2. A combo and head/cab....I really like em’! I mean it’s not a JCM800 but they do the job pretty damn good!
Should try and get your hands on a DOD FX65 Stereo Chorus Pedal. You probably already know but that’s what John used on BSSM. They sound awesome and are about 10% the cost of a CE-1.
Dave if you plug headphones into your Marshall MG it sounds like John trust me and try to record your phone near the headphone s it sounds close on a clean channel
I used a fender amp today and the gain doesn't start gained up I had it on 0 and it was clean and it still compresses the ds2 and the wh10 v3 that would be a good sound for replica ce-1 crunch
Many people have a small combo amp, something like a Blues Junior. Can you do anything with that? Have the Golden Plexi pedal and the Strat but it still doesn't sound right for the clean tone (my favourite). I suppose I'm just not messing around with all the settings enough, or the Blues Junior won't do the tone, It would be good if you could revisit this video but with a small combo amp and maybe a few more pedals - like cheap Boss ones, or a Big Muff. A lot of stuff that doesn't in fact cost a heap. I can't see my wife allowing a 4x12 in the sitting room...
I cannot achieve compression in my amps :( I have an orange AD30R, All valve, one dirty channel and other ss ones)... So, in all of them I need to set the gain at maximum to be able to have that compression so that my distortion and wh10 doesn't increase insanely the volume :( volume is at maximum as well :'(

Dave Simpson thanks Dave. Is there any natural reverb we are hearing from that concert, IE to replicate that live sound that he is getting at home maybe a pedal with light reverb on to replicate the natural sound of the concert? Or does your ear have it completely dry during scar tissue for example?
@Dave Simpson, I got a 2nd hand mg 100 dfx (the combo version) and I tried out your frusciante settings: OD1-Gain4-Bass2-Treb, mid and contour all on zero - vol10. However, to my ears it differs from your sound. The sound I get with my Mexican fender strat on neck pick up is more distorted and not sparkling enough, rather like a 'bubble underwater effect'. I have put the treble up a bit but I'm not there yet. Is this still the setting you use for his sound, and can you please inform me about your guitar volume en tone knobs settings? Also, do you use the FDD button on the amp?
I know you're trying to be funny, but...no.lol It's all about the specific kind of wah-wah and distortion, the order in which you lay the pedals out on your board, and having a slightly over-driven signal. As he said the Ibanez wah doesn't behave with a clean signal. I had to say something because it apparently went over your head.lol
Dave, I know Frusciante paired a Marshall Major with a Jubilee, but I'm searching the role of each amp apart in this amalgamation. According to some websites the jubilee was responsible for a more driven sound while the major was doing a more clean sound and is hard to break up. Other say that the major was for the heavier tones and the jubilee was giving more treble and a sparklier sound. What would you say? I'm writing an article about Frusciantes gear and playing style :)
I would say that the jubilee was more of John's main amp and the major was there for clarity. John would run the jubilee on 10 so it would be a broken up cleanish tone where as the major would have been cleaner but still a little dirty. The old plexi style amps have a lovely compression when turned up to a certain point that just makes the sing. The plexi would have certainly added quite a bit to the sound but i do feel that the jubilee is the amp we hear the most of. Its also the amp that John stands in front of mostly when he wants feedback or anything. He always faces the jubilee. : )
Dave. I’m trying to find the amp head your using in this video. When I google it I keep finding the amp that looks like the one to your right. Not the one to the left. Can you link me to the amp you are using in this video?
Cool video. I'm really happy with my in-the-box Frusciante tone going through a Universal Audio Silver Jubilee, Neve 1081, and 1176. Got a time damn near identical to BSSM era John. I'll have to try this set up with my Plexi. It's interesting that your amp eq is all the way down besides the bass knob. I also find that turning my neck tone knob to 7.5 on my Strat is the sweet spot for a JF tone. What's yours at? I must have missed it if you mentioned it.
One day John Frusciante will call Dave and ask for Frusciante's tone
:) Thank you. : )

what settings do you use on the strat? like the tone nobs.
Everything on ten
Dave. I’m trying to find the amp head your using in this video. When I google it I keep finding the amp that looks like the one to your right. Not the one to the left. Can you link me to the amp you are using in this video?
The amp i am using is the Marshall MG100 HDFX but mine are rehoused in plexi head boxes. The Mg on the left is what they actually look like. : )
so could i achieve this sound with a ds-1 and a vox wah v845? if not what do you recomend changing.
You need a DS2 instead of the DS1. : )
Dave Simpson is there a big difference between them sound wise? The demos I've seen don't do a good job explaining it
