The Lyell McEwin Hospital began its life as a 45 bed community hospital built in a paddock.
From its small beginnings with 45 beds to service the growing population of the newly established satellite city of Elizabeth, the Lyell McEwin Hospital, affectionately known as "The Lyell Mac", was opened by its namesake, then Minister for Health Sir Lyell McEwin.
Patients from the old Salisbury Hospital were transferred to the new hospital. The first Lyell patient was admitted five days later on 27 April 1959 and the first baby born on 29 April 1959.
The first surgery was performed on 12 May 1959, which was a caesarean section. Operating theatres were fully operational from June and there were 394 procedures performed in the first year.
By 1966 bed numbers had more than tripled to 153 beds to keep up with the growing population’s health needs. The original pavilion style of the hospital enabled additional ward blocks to be built and easily connected at both ends of the existing facility, without disturbing patients in the existing wards.
In 1968 The Victor Barrell Wing was opened with a Casualty Department (emergency department) and pathology lab. This allowed for more complex surgeries to be undertaken by the Emergency Medical Officer and for minor accident cases to be handled in proper facilities. The pathology service enabled for on-site testing for most tests required.
The first Outpatients building was opened in 1975 with services including orthopaedic, nose and throat, urology, obstetric, gastro-enterology, physiotherapy, dental, diabetic, radiology and stomal therapy.
In 1980 new accommodation for Extended Care services was opened, enabling the recruitment of additional social workers, physiotherapists, podiatrists and community health nurses.
In 2002, a major three-part redevelopment program of the Lyell McEwin Hospital worth in excess of $300 million began to meet the increasing needs of the growing northern suburbs and surrounding region. This was completed in 2016.

In the mid 1950s, 14 miles north of Adelaide, South Australia, the South Australian Housing Trust, along with then Premier Sir Thomas Playford and their Town Planners, were busy building a new city from the dirt up, in a region formerly known simply as the Gawler, or Adelaide Plains.
Birthed with great enthusiasm, a set of loosely defined objectives and deemed “the City of Tomorrow”, the attempt to construct and then guarantee the success of the Housing Trusts’ original vision, frame the early history of the town that would come to be known as Elizabeth.
Not everything went according to plan. There was failure, there was success. We celebrate it all - the good, the great, the bad....and the downright ugly!

I was there from 1970 to 1978. Very funny seeing one of the male nurses I went out with for a while at the end there.

We lived in Rollison Road, Elizabeth Vale when I was young and the hospital was at the end of the Road near the shops. Our daughter was born there in 1982.

I was born in this hospital and had a few visits to emergency there. One of your other videos featured the lovely Dorothy Joel, her husband John was i believe a director of the Lyell Mc for many years.

Oh, cool. I was born there also - last time I was a patient was 1990, to have my appendix removed. Cheers for watching Steve - love hearing from people and their stories of growing up in Elizabeth. Awesome 🙏

It's a lovely video and the music suits it to a T. My class of which was Saint Mary's planted trees around the oval. I wonder if they're still there.

Thank you Toni - it can be a challenge, but I never rest until I find a song with some lyrics and tone I feel suit the video. So thanks again, appreciate it - it can be very time consuming finding the right fit at times.

Oh wow :). I had my first child there in 1975 and went on to nurse there in 1976 till 1978. It had ar rather poor reputation for it's ER, but in my view, the nursing standards were very high and I have fond memories of Sister Steele who ran the 'ladies ward lol'. We had our own on-site nursing school and one of our tutors was a lovey Canadian, tho sadly I can't remember her name.

    • @elizabeththatwas
      @elizabeththatwas  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Well, Elizabeth itself has a rather mixed reputation - it's a lot of things to different people. The Lyell Mac seems to reflect that as well. I was born there, had an eye op there and had my appendix removed there in 1990. I have no complaints at all - I was well looked after every time. Thank you for your service Susan - nursing is often a very thankless job 🙏

@@elizabeththatwas ..Thank you ...it was a great place to work and the people were wonderful. Lol....I even remember the day '4 colour pens were released :)....back in the day of paper patient charts, we had to use multiple coloured pens..woohoo....we were ecstatic...so commonplace now, and paper patient notes?....all digital.
