You dont need a vice or channel locks. If you look under the forward assist, you'll see the hole at the bottom has a funnel, this is where it was meant to be inserted. Hammering from the top will result in a snail trail around the hole and much more set up time.
@@ceebee2555 I’m not saying you should actively damage your weapon lol, definitely care for it, try to be cautious but oh well if you nick the receiver it’s not gonna hurt the weapon in any way
This is the third video on this that I've watched in preparation for replacing the forward assist on my girlfriend's AR with a (sigh) purple one. Anyway... while this does appear easy and I anticipate no problems, it amazes me that no one uses roll pin starter punches or even roll pin punches any more. Do folks no longer care about damaging roll pins these days?
Let's not hate on the man for sharing knowledge... yes we all agree a rubber, nylon and or plastic hammer would have been a better option, but still thank you for teaching others
This is rough. Would have been easier to insert from below, canceling the step of beating the pin in with the hammer. All you would have to do when inserting from below, is release the forward assist to catch the pin, and use a roll pin punch to gently drive it in.
Yeah I did it his way the first time and got a nice nail trail over the top of the forward assist. There is a funnel in the hole below which is where it was meant to be inserted.
What is the best way to remove the forward assist? Punch from below or above? Do I need to slightly push in on the assist when removing the forward assist as with installing it?
DO NOT PUT THE FLAT PART OF THE FORWARD ASSIST ASSEMBLY TOWARDS THE ROLL PIN… he says to do that then flips the assembly over and does the opposite of what he says
Short, no introduction and to the point. We need more of this. Thanks!

Flipped over my upper and saw the “funnel.” Thanks! Definitely intended to be installed from the bottom
Thank you man! I’m getting ready to install mine on a new build and saw this comment
Brass end hammer still screws your finish if you miss, example show done by yourself in this video
It’s meant to go bang not to look pretty
@@zemotika then why did he bother to use a brass hammer?

Thanks for telling and showing folks how to orient the assist. Most video narrators say "just stick it in" without adequate explanation.

Gently?
It’s a good thing you used a brass hammer.
😂
😂😂😂
Thanks for showing the proper orientation. A roll pin starter punch is pretty cheap and the appropriate tool for the job.
I was about to absolutely roast you for the marks from the hammer but instead learned something new. Brass hammer, nice. Great vid!
I usually tape around the area I'm using the hammer. Flat top got dinged up a little there.
is this a video on how to beat up your upper ?
I love how he said “so you don’t mar up the finish” and then proceeds to mar up the finish with a hammer. 🤦🏻♂️
Thats the brass from the hammer not the recvr you dingus
Didn't have a brass hammer and I paid the price. Gotta find some FDE touch-up paint now. FML. Thanks for the video though!
Sounds like John C Rieley
I’ve tried to do 2 its always been really difficult. I think the recievers I bought may have too tight of pin channel
good explanation of the placement friend, but one more thing, which band is the one in the background?
This guy doesn't know what a punch is.. he still scuffed the rifle
Damn you had it...why didn’t you use a brass punch right before you dinged it you even had it started and in the right spot 😨
Brass "hammer" and standard 3/32 roll pin punch
He marred the rail, he is mangling that upper.
Brass punch?
Thumbs Up #556. Thanks for the help.
Great video
But you dinged the reciever with the pliers a little :D
Good video
use channel locks to push the pin through.
Yikes
Yeah and mar the upper when they slip. No thanks
Easy peezy.
"Wipe it all right off..." ...except that gouge in the pic rail.
It happens to the best of us. But you could have at least mentioned the f-up.
What a hack job
Dang mine does not want to go in that easy. Half way in and mushrooming and not want to go farther

From below would hide any marks you make better. And yes, push the button in to relieve tension.
go on just beat the crap out of the upper
Beating the shit out that gun man😂
BS it takes much more swinging force to get that pin in
Not mare the surface/finish? Fucking caveman installation . Blurry fast ....just a total shit show.
terrible...
Cringe.....
Never!! Would I let you work on my weapons. 🤦♂️ holy hell
It’s meant to go bang not to look pretty
you need some practice with that hammer little boy
DO NOT PUT THE FLAT PART OF THE FORWARD ASSIST ASSEMBLY TOWARDS THE ROLL PIN… he says to do that then flips the assembly over and does the opposite of what he says
No, he didn't.
haha use a brass hammer so you don't mar your finish...haha, black finish missing all over .. maybe use a hard plastic/rubber hammer instead..
You just scratched the receiver
No he didn't. Thus the need for the brass hammer.
When he says "towards" it means the flat spot goes towards it from the side not up. Did a poor job of explaining that
