Yes, those homes are perfectly adapted to the climate there. Cool in the hot season and warm when its cold outside. The foliage the women were covering with mud is one of the best natural insulators that many people in the western world who are building off-grid homes are using similar methods. Keep in mind that the west experiences harsh winters, so this type of building in Kenya which has some of the best climates globally, keeps the interior of such huts cozy year round.
There's something missing from this video...Men! Women birth babies, farm, cook, collect material for building, build, what do their men do? Interesting to watch for sure. Respect to the survival and culture of these tribal people.
They do a lot of duties too. Men are also doing hard work too. Without each other they can not survive. Prejudice and lack of knowledge gives bad energy. Think kindly…
When l see those kind of foundation, l wonder how long it can last. Is there all-year dry climate, that those woods below ground level don't rot away without burning them a bit in fire? Or is it a temporary structure?
Well... the wood doesnt need to hold tgat much. The ground itself seems pretty dry and even if the part ankered in the ground begins to rot it will still stand upright. Basically until the roof colapses this kind of house will be fine i recon
i just read an article about how many of the masai people are being kicked off their land ,and their cattle confiscated by their government, in order to create reserves for private hunting and for more safari traffic. it was heartbreaking.
Indeed, they were coming over the border from Tanzania while we were there filming this. I try not to get involved in these things but sometimes I get very cross with the way the selfish rich treat the lands that these people have occupied for generations.
@@NomadArchitecture Yeah, the selfish rich have done it to all of us Westerners too in the past. Who can still afford to own land? A small house if you're lucky but land for agriculture and animals? We've all been driven off. It is of course sad to see a whole traditional life style and culture being lost. People being forced into poverty and minimal wages....
Very interesting! 😊👍👍👍 Impressing way to create stability and flexibility. The roof is connected to the walls in a way, that let's the water rinse of. I wonder if the roof stays water proof. In Europe only way is either layers of birch bark plus sods or shingles of larch or straw roof. I see, the bark is not removed. That would lead to troubles in our area. The clay is not mixed with smaller fiber to avoid cracks? 🤔
The reason they use the animal poop is because it already has the straw content that one would have to manually mix in to a normal cob or adobe mixture. When it dries, there isn't a smell. It's pretty smart when you realize they are skipping another gathering and mixing phase just by using that as a building material.
These masai women are strong and have a lot of skills and the house is fantastic. They really live with the nature with respect. In some other parts of the world AI is going to make humans weaker than weak.
Was wondering what do the men do in this community because it seems to me the women do all the work, but its a very good learning to know what women can do around the world.❤❤❤
My dear friend, the Masai men are herds men. While that may sound simple, you must keep in mind they frequently have to deal with lions, hyenas, and aggressiveherbivores. That is a very dangerous job. In Masai culture, people work together. The work men do is something children and most women can't do, and dare I say, most people would rather build a house than take a chance herding cattle in lion and hyena infested lands. Thats not even factoring in gunmen that try to steal cattle.
ive watched other massai videos and found out that men doesnt do any house chores, they are in charge with their animals 24/7 but they are just most of the time sitting watching the animals eat..and women do all the works from building their home to cleaning, cooking, fetching water, firewood, washing clothes, milking the animals and of course taking care of the children and as a woman it feels so unfair and so exhausting but thats their way.they marry more than one for the reason that the more wives they have the easier chores will be coz they will help each other.seems reasonable but odd for most of us who are used to just one spouse
This is an honest question--why is dung used at all? Specifically, what properties does it provide so that it makes it worth using. I might be missing something but it feels like plain old clay/dirt would work just as well.
It's plentiful due to their farm animals, and much easier and faster to gather compared to only digging for clay and dirt, the digested plant matter in the dung might also give it more integrity when it dries. Those are my assumptions
It is a bio plastic even used now in pretended "moderner country". Stable in time, insulating, , materproofing when dried, already mixed with non digested fibres that helps like iron i reinforcing concrete.
@Pengalen during the day they herd cattle meaning they have to defend their livestock against lions, hyenas and baboons. Most people would freeze at the site of an aggressive dog let alone a lion.
Why only women building, men not even carrying heavy stuff? What are the role of the men? I can hear some male voices.... ah blessing the house by drinking coffee, same in modern cultures
@@quincywhite9938 Ehh, that's boys before they are made warriors. Please note that most of the Masai in this video wear modern clothes and live near stores or lodges, which many work for; men are mostly sitting around and hurting. Maybe it is time to give men and women in traditional tribal cultures (equal opportunities) in sharing chores as they are not frozen in time?

This is so cool. wonderful work .❤👍👍❤
It is interesting to look at the life of the tribe, their customs, clothes, decorations. I wonder where they get their water?
Obviously a nearby river. This area looks pretty green/lush. The Massai are nomadic so they would just go to wherever they can access water.

E uma verdadeira honra de arte as casas🇧🇷👍👏👏👏👏
The roof is an engineering marvel to support the clay mass! Good thing they don't have any snow load. That'd probably be a problem.
Yes how 'lucky ' there's no snow in Kenya 🤦
Beautiful nature ❤❤
would love someday to visit the massaii
Get in touch if you do, one way we try to help these people is by introducing a few visitors to them.

Can’t say I like their singing!

Some wood handle high humidity pretty well. Might be the case here, though it is kinda doubtful. Maybe these houses aren't made to last very long
Well... the wood doesnt need to hold tgat much. The ground itself seems pretty dry and even if the part ankered in the ground begins to rot it will still stand upright. Basically until the roof colapses this kind of house will be fine i recon
Semi-permanent. Not meant to last for decades. These nomadic tribes dont stay in one place long enough for it to be a concern.
It lasts longer than you expect,
Recyclable. Collapses down into dirt, poo and organic matter. So actually good for the soil. This is sustainable. Are our dwellings sustainable?
