Parasite was a different type of horror that some of us could relates to which made it more terrifying. It’s an incredible film had some serious chills throughout it. People need to stop sleeping on foreign films!
Watch America make a remake of this movie with a full white cast. Like they always do with all the foreign movies and series which have a lot of success.
pretty sure films about socio-economic classes, etc. have been done for decades across all countries. And it's not as if other countries haven't taken/copied from other countries before.
Yep it has been done before. But whats so great about Parasite is that Bong Joon Ho created really likeable and hilarious characters. And treats both upper and lower class with empathy. While still have the message intact. The poor little sister
Love all the metaphors of this movie. Especially the part where they ran down stairs and hills in a state of frenzy-- depicting a descend of social class. I went to an Ivy League university. My family was not well to do. The scholarship paid for tuition fees but I literally rented a place in the basement, while a classmate could pay £1000+ per night to live in hotel. There are never-ending examples of stark contrasts, including the foods we eat etc. Perhaps studying reallyyyy hard could bring one to an Ivy League school. But I was schooled at that same place that I don't belong, and that connections matter more than my hard work. So I love how the movie ironically depicts the 'lower' class using their (family) connections to get jobs instead of the upper class. This movie hits home hard.
Personally, what stood out to me was not social stratification... rather, the distinction brought out the human nature that we all share, rich or poor...
I visited my relatives in korea and we are generally poor. So my grandmother lives in a run down apartment filled with the stentch of trash. The entrance of the apartment is in alley where stray cats lives. Bug craw everywhere and the place floods easily. I try to help her as much as I can but I'm also going through troubles as well. This movie just hit me hard
The reason why this movie is being better recieved by people of the other countries is because of human empathy. We all are divided by race, culture, language, country and religion but after all we all are human beings and understand each other's feelings.
Although the movie shows us the class system of the korean society. I think it very well relates to my country, the Philippines as well. You can see the invisible wall dividing the rich and poor and the prejudice towards each other.
I watched ‘parasite’ twice - something I rarely do. I actually enjoyed it more the second time since I was paying more attention to how the scenes and the sequence were crafted so well. Also, excellent interview! A few of your interviewees had some really insightful comments that made me think. Thank you :)
As a lower income family, this movie made me really uncomfortable and sad at same time... I knew my life wasn't good, but I realized how stupid my life is in front of people around me, including my best friend who is really rich (yes, his dad owns multiple buildings in Korea)..... so if you are like me, I do NOT recommend this movie, even though it is one of the best Korean movies ever made with high rating.
Stnay Bhavia please don’t take it as a criticism of the poor. I think there are equal arguments that the rich family are parasites too. I think it’s more a comment on the human condition and wealth, it just happens to be from the perspective of a lower class citizen. My family is nit wealthy either but I don’t think Bong Joon-Ho’s intention was for us to feel shame :)
The has a lot of things to think of. Just seeing the poor as parasites is not the only thing. Both families can being seen as parasites... even inside the families some members are parasites too. Take the movie as a criticism abt society and how sad and injustice it is.
To take reality and portray it like this..is genius. This happens in all countries...its an excellent portrayal of what goes through people's minds and in reality, it is an excellent depiction of how poverty creates a turning point towards crime to live a better life.
This film has been so positively received everywhere because it deals with universal themes affecting the entire world. But, it is doing it without being preachy. Excellent movie. I have been getting into the Korean drama recently, and I am enjoying it. (both the trashy fun and the more serious ones)
Would've been interesting if they also spoke to some low income people and got their opinion on the social economic stratification in Korea (generally, apart from the movie).
Why would you assume that people who opted in this interview are all high-income people? People in Seoul are not all rich, as more than 50% of the Korean population live in large cities. They are just ordinary citizens who agreed to do this interview, and it is likely that some of them are form lower socioeconomic backgrounds.
@@byte2897 I didn't assume high income, I assumed enough disposable income to go to the movies. Additionally, my comment was largely geared towards extending the inquiry of the class debate generally and not only in response to/ as a reaction to the movie.

CrabTastingMan There is rich people that arent assholes believe it or not and theyre not all wearing suits in a rush to go to some business meaning or whatever. The highest paid 20% are considered upper class but in my opinion upper class basically means youre rich so maybe 200k salary? Most people that make that much get most of their money passively because they run a business. So they have no need to be busy 24/7 when the reality for the working class is they work sometimes over 10 hours a day so truly they are more busy
Can't wait to see it in the new year as it comes out in February here. The fact that it is a dark comedy should definitely be appealing, as a lot of the films made in my country fall under that category too.
Haven't seen it but it's definitely on my watch list, sounds interesting I like movies of such kind on a serious note that base it's story on social issues.
I just saw Parasite over the weekend and loved it. I'm so glad that Asian Boss is around to let me hear straight from the source how the Korean people feel about the film and its depiction of their society. The depiction of the lower classes literally fighting to the death in the basement for the chance to serve an oblivious upper class upstairs is something that people all over the world can relate to.
I remember watching an interview with Bong Jun-ho about the movie and he said that he thought he had directed a film that portrayed a very "Korean reality" but , after seeing the way it resonated with audiences abroad, he realized how we're all living in a "global village". It certainly echoes a lot of issues that are also very present here in Portugal and that affect a lot of people from my generation. It's not only an outstanding film, it's an important one as well.
Movie of the year, by far. It was 2 hours long and it was a constant barrage of brilliance, simply spectacular. And the last 30 minutes were just... wow. The entire theater was blown away by this movie. The scenes with the rain struck a chord with me. For the rich family it was just a beautiful moment sitting there enjoying the rain, and at the same time the poor family were struggling to save their home. Exaggerated for sure, but the point of social inequality came through strong.
the story is very universal hence a lot of people can relate to the issues presented. one of the best films i've seen that could easily rival some of hollywood's film output.
although most of the people you interviewed don't seem like they're part of the upper class (middle class maybe) I don't think they KNOW about how poor some people can be, and they only have a very vague, superficial idea about it. after all they are urban city dwellers. and on another not, the film has been well received WORLDWIDE, it's not an america only thing, jeez
Don Corleone yeah, the poor Kim family all had some skills. *But they were down on their luck from economic disasters which were symbolized in how the storm floods the semi-basement but creates a wonderful clear day for the rich.* It was mentioned in the movie that they used to live average lives in a surface apartment. The poor guy was “studying for entrance exams” only because such people are aiming for the best colleges. His sister has great skills with bluffing and photoediting. His mom still has her trophy from her international weightlifting athlete days. His dad accrued enough money before quitting his job and bandwagoning into the ill-fated Cake shop fad and its boom-bust cycle. The poorer crazy guy in the wall bunker, living between wall spaces like a parasitic roach, his wife explained he was hiding from debt collectors because he too was eaten up by the failed Cake shop fad. The rich boy’s toy tepee is more waterproof than the semi-basement. Yet also the Native American getup of the rich boy symbolizes an example of people who failed to defend their homes from outsiders. Yet also, it shows what becomes of the losers in such engagements: the natives’ weapons used to solemnly defend their homeland became mockeries, toys Americans sell for profit and buy to give their children. The director said the kitchen’s waste bin is a $2,500 titanium chassis bin with a totally silent pedal. Yet the rich woman sheds bills when she gives money to the poor guy for his fee. (Actually there are many many clues in the film that show she is actually a ditzy commoner who married a rich guy, from what she eats, how she eats, her wrong mannerisms, etc.)
This movie is one of a kind because of how different the plot is. It goes from a comedy to a drama/thriller and is personally my favorite from him (and this year). I wish I went into the theatre sober but still amazing to watch.
The cinematography is what brought parasite to the rest of the world. and that script and the actor ofcourse. but the fact that their director and editor did a great job is the result of this. Ofc i loved Jessica too.
No one used hand gestures when describing the movie. Even when saying, "flipped the script." That would be impossible in any Latin country, in Europe or in the Americas.
I've watched the movie and the twists were unexpected. Me and my friends were like laughing at the start and we even asked each other if what we're watching is the right movie (since it's a mystery-thriller according to what we researched prior to watching it) it was really well made. The way they depicted the differences of social classes were on point.
Wow, I watched this movie like 4 months ago in France. I chose to watch it with french subtitles to keep the chill of the language and actors skills and I really not regret it. I would gladly watch it again.

they say that these class divisions are exaggerated when there are people in korea literally living in these types of situations?? i guess that's the irony of the film.. the privileged not recognizing poverty
I live in Korea and it's very exaggerated. Have you even been here lol? The country has lower poverty rates than England and a minimum wage of 1600 dollars
To the the world South Korea seems to be country that seems to do well economically as well as it citizens. This movie though its fiction shows a side of South Korea thats not known or addressed. If anything to come out of this movie hopefully South Korea addresses these things in their society as well as other countries following suit as well.

I feel like the people interviewed seemed more eloquent in this video than in other Asia boss videos from Korea.:) really nice point of views of those people
Maybe Asian Boss isn't selective but the Koreans who are not comfortable in front of cameras declined to be interviewed because they do not want to make a fool of themselves.
Is a testament to Bong Joon-Ho’s craft and the poignance of the film’s theme on how well it faired all around the world. It is almost a universal story, even with its korean particularities. The dark humor is great. Congrats to everyone involved in its production and hopefully it gets even MORE awards abroad (I consider the Palme D’Or much more prestigious than the Oscar, but popularity is always important).

How did Bong Joon-ho film that flood scene ? A cinematic masterpiece.

pretty sure films about socio-economic classes, etc. have been done for decades across all countries. And it's not as if other countries haven't taken/copied from other countries before.
Yep it has been done before. But whats so great about Parasite is that Bong Joon Ho created really likeable and hilarious characters. And treats both upper and lower class with empathy. While still have the message intact. The poor little sister

@@ElaineBarlow or better yet.. it's obvious u haven't watched the movie so STFU
Great video! Thanks for producing.
If sucks that who know to get a job
Great movie, my favorite of the year, Bong Joon Ho is an amazing director.
Personally, what stood out to me was not social stratification... rather, the distinction brought out the human nature that we all share, rich or poor...
BEST picture 2020 winning FOUR Oscars. Congratulations!
It may even win an Oscar if nominated.
Can we stop for a second to admire this natural beauty at 3:06? No need for plastic bs on her face, just an absolute Korean queen.

Just watched it today. Highly recommended. Btw, the people interviewed here have great reviews and perceptions about the theme of the movie.
I watched it 2 weeks ago and I'm waiting for it to be released for sale to add it to my collection. It's probably one of my favorite films so far.
The reason why this movie is being better recieved by people of the other countries is because of human empathy. We all are divided by race, culture, language, country and religion but after all we all are human beings and understand each other's feelings.
I love what the guy said about the movie shedding light on his own prejudices and perceptions, I felt the same
everyone that they interviewed would be the type to attend the garden party in the movie
They all look like working class people. Working class people in Korea don't dress in rags like Parasite or your poverty country would have you think
I just watched today and omg I didn’t regret every min of it. Masterpiece indeed. It gave me the feeling of erasing my memory to watch it again.

Just saw it. One of the best movies I've seen easily. Unique, horrifying, funny and tense all in one movie.
Anyone here after Parasite won big at the Oscars 2020? The storyline, movie, cast truly deserved those oscars! Bang Joon Ho did wonders with this one
True wealth is deeds and health
As a movie it's great but has 0 morality aspect. I had same "uncomfortable" feeling when watching this movie.
@@GlowingF0ssil STFU . What 0 morality ...
To take reality and portray it like this..is genius. This happens in all countries...its an excellent portrayal of what goes through people's minds and in reality, it is an excellent depiction of how poverty creates a turning point towards crime to live a better life.
Well tbh is freaking close to the reality of my country (México). Is so close to our reality is scary.

Kagiso Mphuthi and how do you suppose they could interview a rich person?
Even if they found one, why would a rich person bother to answer the questions from some youtube media channel?
CrabTastingMan
There is rich people that arent assholes believe it or not and theyre not all wearing suits in a rush to go to some business meaning or whatever.
TWrecks you’ve clearly never known someone who owns a small business, it is so much harder than a working class job and you sound like a dumbass
Can't wait to see it in the new year as it comes out in February here. The fact that it is a dark comedy should definitely be appealing, as a lot of the films made in my country fall under that category too.

Parasite is the best movie of 2019 hands down
I remember watching an interview with Bong Jun-ho about the movie and he said that he thought he had directed a film that portrayed a very "Korean reality" but , after seeing the way it resonated with audiences abroad, he realized how we're all living in a "global village".

I heard Stephane soo talk about it, and I was so into it

the story is very universal hence a lot of people can relate to the issues presented. one of the best films i've seen that could easily rival some of hollywood's film output.
Its a masterpiece.
Very thoughtful answers by these interviewees
although most of the people you interviewed don't seem like they're part of the upper class (middle class maybe) I don't think they KNOW about how poor some people can be, and they only have a very vague, superficial idea about it. after all they are urban city dwellers.
and on another not, the film has been well received WORLDWIDE, it's not an america only thing, jeez
I was watching Korean movie recently. Surprised by the quality. Quite deep and realistic.
Are these normal people in South Korea? They are all so smart...
They are normal. Koreans tend to be thoughtful and good critical thinkers. Could be a byproduct of the education system being extremely competitive
One of the main themes of the movie is how talented young people in South Korea are but do not have enough opportunities to move up.
I wish I went into the theatre sober but still amazing to watch.
the film was really good but i'm surprised no one mentioned okja
