    Super, comprehensive coverage. Love your reviews - and the Oscilloscope displays :-) I've been following this synth for a few months and have ordered one (due mid-Jan). I love that it has no display yet manages to be very useable as well as, IMO, innovative in many areas. I will, finally, have to join you on patreon to get those presets :-)

    Your reviews are the absolute best source on YT. You explain things that other channels really don't understand and you do it in a coherent way. So many channels really don't understand the gear they are reviewing. I will probably never understand all the features in any synth, but I know I'll know more if I watch your videos VS someone else's channel, which are woefully inept to say the least. I've been using synthesizers since the early 1980s so got to own some pretty cool gear over the years. Although I can play them, I never understood the verbiage, and your channel fills in that void of knowledge.

    • @Sinevibes
      @Sinevibes 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@billB101 It is different from many synthesizers because you can see and hear the love and passion that went into making of this one. It sounds super super lovely with every move of every control, this is not a small feat. If you followed the path of this development, and heard the main creator himself speak about it, you would probably understand. And yes, the result is that this machine has incredible attention to detail, in and out, which you won’t see on synths which are made to fit a certain place in the market...

Seems to be of very high quality build complete with the Italian made Fatar keybed with aftertouch (these are the best I have ever felt). To put this into perspective, UDO Super 6 is selling today for one third of what it would have cost you had it been something that came out in 1985. And I may be under estimating that. Also, i think that due to the digital nature of the FPGA oscillators it is important to underline one feature that has not been shown here - if you press shift, and manipulate PW, you will dial in Drift mode, that is very similar to DSI/Sequential "slop". So you can have two very wonky oscillators. This does not apply to LFO 1, I think (maybe it does I will try now).

    • @rars0n
      @rars0n 3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Even back in the days of classic Mac OS, most people didn't upgrade right away for that exact reason. Even if the OS didn't completely break software, it just made sense to stay on the stable release while driver or other updateswere written for the new OS, which usually took some time.
      Edit: I am becoming increasingly less enamored with technology, and I've been a diehard ever since getting my first Pentium-100 computer as a kid and learning everything I possibly could. I'm sick of constant OS updates that often break basic features and I'm sick of the bloated nature of everything. My Windows computer has orders of magnitude more power than the lowly Mac Trent Reznor was using back in 1994, and yet so many CPU cycles are wasted on OS modules I'm not even using, like Xbox functionality, or stuff I don't want, like all the telemetry monitoring that is tied into Windows update. Imagine how much more useful modern CPU power would be if it it weren't constrained by modern software. I'm not even going to start on how much I hate modern smart phones and how quickly they become unusable.
      The thing is I'm MUCH more interested in using OLDER computer software and platforms like classic Macs and even the Atari ST because there's a lot of cool shit that you can do with these things, and you don't have to worry about them breaking functionality due to updates or other nonsense. I hate how quickly iPads become obsolete and how modern software forces you to use the latest crap MacOS and vice versa. I'm sure some people like the new stuff, but I feel like we've hit a hard wall years ago as to how functional the basic OS is. While it may not be entirely functional, at least with old hardware I know that I can fire up the old shit and it will still always work! Not today, not modern shit, with everything relying on an internet connection.
      The reliance on subscriptions and internet connections is making even "ancient" audio technology infinitely more appealing to me. I'd say the same thing about the gaming industry. For sure, there's a few games that pique my interest, like Cyberpunk, but most modern games don't thrill me like the classics do, and I already own them and can play them whenever I want, unlike a game that one buys off of the Xbox store or whatever, where they can just be removed and if you don't already have them saved, you're out of luck.
      Sorry for the rant.

    I've recently tried a Matriarch and a Super 6, as that was what I'd narrowed my choice down to after a long procrastination as there are some great synths out this year and my current keyboard has been hammered over the years. My wife has a Summit, which by the way is ace. I like the Matriarch, but the Super 6 sounded amazing, even in mono mode it was really chunky with lots of heft as Nick Batt would say. The controls are, how should I say it 'alternative', but they seam to lead you down different avenues to explore. It is very hands on and the keybed was also lovely to play with a very nicely balanced after touch. The arp hold mode was a bit odd, though I understand that is going to be just one of the arp modes.
    Overall I'd say it is a very organic synth.
    Only problem is the Matrirach is in stock, but I have a wait for the Super 6 until after Christmas. Mmmmm, a wait it is then......

      I have a Grandmother. Couldn't quite manage a Matriarch at the time and I didn't want the extra keys on a mono/para keyboard. But I sure would have got one if I had had the £££ :-) However, the Grandmother is brilliant altho, of course, not poly. My Super 6 is due mid Jan. What I'm saying is that you won't go wrong with either but BOTH gives you the best of both worldds :-) Depensa qhat you want them for.. If I had neither, I'd go for the Super 6 and then add a Moog when I could. Good luck!

      I own a Matriarch and would never consider this over that. The only reason people are interested in this synth is because it costs a lot of money, but I don't see at all where it's special enough to command that price. This synth sounds good, but I'm trying to wrap my head around whats so great about it. They also use a bunch of technical terms in the website to make it sound cooler, but like, it's not.
      Basically, they sampled some fgpa oscillator at a crazy high sample rate, and then put imo limp Juno filters on it, and then make a big deal out of it being stereo. They make such a big deal out of the stereo in non standard terminology, that it's borderline suspicious.
      "In Binaural mode, the Super 6 features a true stereo signal path in which the instrument’s twelve voices are twinned to form six stereo ‘super’ voices. Consequently, the left and right channels - and each of the player’s ears - are assigned their own complete synthesizer voice. "
      Yeah guys, we get it, stereo spread the oscillators, UNISON, like every synth that has a spread control. For a digital synth, 6 unison voices per L/R isn't that crazy. You can get 16 left and 16 right with Serum. I still think a programmable midi keyboard running Serum standalone on a mini computer would be a better synth. I think this was a digital synth made in the most analog way, but by someone who knows a little about analog electronics but nothing about DSP. Like, if you're putting a computer in there to run the oscillators, just do it. No one need 50MHz oscillators. Most songs are just fine with 48khz oversampled to 1Mhz.
      100% matriarch all day every day. And you can do two voices left two voices right with the matriarch. I would struggle to see why anyone would buy this over an OB-6 or Prophet rev, or matriarch, possible novation summit. It just sounds so much like a regular soft synth.
      Ask me any questions about the matriarch I'd be happy to answer because it's a synth I will never ever sell. I also own an OB-6 desktop. I do videos and stuff too so I'm not past making a video showing the matriarch do stuff for my channel.

    This clearly aspires to be a modern take on the Jupiter 8. The Jupiter 8 has the same sort of binaural out-of-phase stereo LFO sounds in unison and layered modes. And the panel layout is virtually the same (as mentioned in the video). I think the filter on the Super 6 is very weak though compared to the vintage Rolands.

      I am lucky enough to have both.
      The Super 6 has a lot more sound sources/super-saw, is much more versatile and has the whole binaural thing going on - it really does sound great (although by the time you voice spread on the OB-6 and chuck on some stereo chorus and reverb, it also sounds pretty dynamic from a stereo perspective). As you learn its interface and routing options you constantly come up with new ways to design sounds and realize how thoughtful/innovative George Hearn/the designers have been. And BTW I hardly ever miss not having a screen.
      Both the Super 6 and OB-6 have cross mod to get you to interesting sonic places, but the Super 6's implementation is more extensive.
      The OB-6 does warm analog better (the Super 6 definitely does warm, but in a "cleaner" way if that makes sense), allows you to module its waveforms (the Super 6 does not need to do this so much as you have lots of waveforms to choose from), and has the SEM filter, so if you want that notch/fizzy element in your sounds, you need the OB-6. The OB-6 also has somewhat heavier bass. In addition, the onboard FX are good and become part of the sound design process.
      If I could only chose one it would be the Super 6, but my advice would be to hold onto your OB-6.
      ... And then get a Prophet-5 Rev 4, and while you're at it, a black Matriarch... And leave any more complex, wavetable-heavy sound design to Zebra, Serum, Hive, Omnisphere et al.
      ... And then (note to self), actually focus on writing some music.
