Thank you for your great videos. That engine is the stuff from nightmares, makes a M62 look like a simple lawnmower engine. Please don't forget to support the backside of the car when taking the engine out, so it doesn't flip from the lift.
When working for the dealer! When these came in with oil leaks, sold complete engine! They leak from everywhere and even Porosity from the block. Fix one leak, they always come back with another! Blanket repair!😂😂
One of your best videos ever - great project car with interesting issues, great presentation, excellent information we can all use, host recovering from COVID bravely, good BMW M6 mystery - what will happen??? The Cost, The Danger of an Engine/Trany Drop...The suspense!!!. All add up to a superb TH-cam video, Thank You
Hey ! Great to see you guys are All-Good from the Rona.. Great to see things getting back to normal in the shop.. Missed hanging out here watchn my favorite tech messing with the cars I consider alot of fun to work-on and drive around.. Great vid !
These engines are crazy. They look like a web of hoses all over the whole damn thing. I saw one sitting out and it was a nightmare just trying to figure out what the hell was going on. Another BMW cluster Fck.
You can pull engine from the top no problem. Trans first, then axles, radiator, and drivers side turbo heat exchanger. Comes right out, I have done N63s and M57s from the top. No need to pull downpipes with engine in. You can check my I-grizzle for pics. Oh without a lift too.
Im pretty sure that bottom cooler is for the transmission cooler.. dont for get the rear maim seal and the tranny input shaft seal and about 10litters of tranny oil and might aswell change the seals which get hard and the input seal for the electrionics and a new oil pan. The bottom oil pan gasket can be reused just need it cleaned and a small thin film of the right stuff and it wont leak! By the way drop the engine and tranny together on the table then separate them. Its easier dropping the whole subframe with the engine and tranny.
Great vids 👍 I’m curious to see what the inside of this engine looks like. I keep hearing of more of these engines seizing. I’m going to start doing oil sample’s on mine.
Question 2014 750 Li X M sport 4.4 engine sized pulling oil pump or pan Loosening up the bearings to try to get it to turn. Can I pull the engine out the top after removing the axle ??
I have a few questions Nathan please if you don’t mind. #1 What is the difference between this engine and the S62 engine other than the turbo’s? I’m talking about the main design of the engine as well as the problems with this engine. Are they similar to the S62 engine problem s? I noticed that you said the engine may be bad and that you would have to wait to get it out to see about it being rebuilt. You then said that you would know then about the crankshaft so is this the same crankshaft or does this engine just suffer to the problems like the S62 does because it’s almost the same design just tweaked a little? Also why do these two BMW engines have the problems with the crankshaft? Is it a engineering defect problem or is it something else? I’m simply asking to get info about questions that I don’t know the answers to. Why is this front end of the main part of the car’s frame made out of plastic mike you said as well and when did this start happening please? Thanks alot for the info and help man.
It really depends, S62 has lots of issues surrounding the engine, vanos, rod bearings.. but in my opinion the early S63s are worse, 2009-14 in the E70/E71 and early F10 M5s and M6s. After 2015 with the LCI/TU updates the engines proved to be way better. The S62 is a 3.9L vs S63 4.4L displacement. The problems that S62s have mostly don’t pop up with the S63, they have new set of issues, both can have rod bearing issues. Some of these issues, like crankshaft or rod bearings are because owners don’t warm up these engines properly as well, they need proper warm ups, proper lubrication and no going crazy on the RPMs for the first few minutes of driving, some owners who follow that practice don’t end of having rod issues even S85 owners. Rod bearings are a problem with most bmw engines when they’re not taken care of, S54, S62, S65, S85, S63s, S55s, N55s I’ve heard all those engines have rod issues at this point it’s down to how you use the car.
You gotta have deep wallets to keep this complicated madness on the road, the entire engine parts will continuously need to be replaced, valve seals nightmare, it’s junk😆
Geez... be two bolts holding the entire car together by the time you get all that out... Lol. You're 100 times braver than I am, I personally wouldn't even attempt that job... scrap it.
After 114k you should drop this motor for a reseal at least take detailed pictures of everything once you drop it out main leak is turbo return lines in the valley
There are leaks from everywhere in that area. The lines get sludged up from constant heat and cooling down. Even if you change your oil every thousand miles. It will still wear over time. And then the oil return cover will leak over time due to heat again hot and cold but turn the soft gasket into rock hard plastic. At 80,000 miles it should all be done. The CCV lines, turbo seals the oil feed lines, 2 turbo return lines, the return cover housing and check the vacuum pump. Then you take the heat shield off and clean it all. Replace all the coolant hoses especially the Y that is notorious for leaking over time. Do it all one time at the first sign otherwise you’ll be in there a lot for that stuff
I am rebuilding this engine too. If you smell gas in oil your injectors are shot. Prices of injectors are now crazy 3500 USD. This is a must do thing. I do not want to worry you, but I bet 90% the cylinders ale oval, very possible scored. In best case scenario you can only go with piston rings (still over a grand). This never happened to me, luckily you can hone to +0,25 mm and go with oversize pistons. The only issue is no machine shop in America is able to do so. I tried 3 shops and no luck. Do not believe anyone about sleeves in this engine, it does not work
I cannot wait to see this engine out of the car and worked on. Below I’ll post the part numbers to the coolant plate just incase you want to reference. They are both identical part and genuine bmw dealer part thanks. Can’t wait for the next video. 11148483799 GENUINE BMW ~$60 11142446298 GENUINE BMW ~$600 (Updated part, both are identically the same) I personally used the $60 original one. I’m good with the 102,000 miles I got out of it, personal choice in my opinion.

OMG so happy to see this. Please film every step im buying a 550i for an amazing deal and this engine is very similar. Thanks so much!
Love the way you explain the what and why. Also good to see you on the mend!!!
"Our carts big enough to do this" I'm sure we heard that with the 911 engine :D
Respect to you, for having the guts to deal with this. Like they say in the meme: Everyone wants a BMW, UNTIL ITS TIME TO DO BMW SHIT!
Very good explanation for issues and findings. Thanks for awesome job done.
really excited to follow this build.
Big Nate dun step his game up.. he ain't bullshxtin no more..he trying to take over the mech game.. I likes dat..
imma pray for the owner, he might go up in flames once he gets the total cost 😂
He could buy a new ricer base model with cash he about to spend.

Don't forget to support that rear diff! Some TH-camr dropped the engine and tranny, the car fell BACKWARDS off the Bendpak. Good luck bud!
Plastic strut towers? This one lost its place on my ‘maybe list’

I have x5m 2012 and I had my motor repaired (used motor) but I'd like to find out how to do it the next time
Great content
Hi Nathan great content! do you happen to know the torque spec for the main cap bolts on the s63?
why not just use two of the harbor freight hydraulic tables?
we only have 1 and they are over $300 per table , in talks now for a legit trans jack

Is the vacuum pump leaking oil on the passenger side ? Or is it the valve cover
S63 part 1!!!!
I am looking to buy an X6M 2013 e71. It had 1 owner and is at 55k kms mileage. Do you think it is worth buying it when well maintained? Thank you
Been watching you for years and learning like I always said you are Batman but could you guide me to a good set of aftermarket rims
Love this project

That harbor freight table will hold motor and transmission the 1000 pound one
its physically too small

Those brakes are ridiculous. Too much useless metal.
